Didn't you know The Beatles went to the poor house after they stopped touring? The same with Steely Dan. Heh.

I agree 100% here with you. All this banter about groups not making a buck off of record sales is true only of small bands that never go anywhere. Established bands that gain a core fanbase certainly do make money from record sales.

The thing is, art and any intellectual property takes time and effort to create. Why shouldn't the creators be compensated?

Not to mention material costs. I know some people will groan when I say this but a professional recording studio is not cheap. The equipment it takes to produce music is normally has a high price tag associated with it. Even in the age of digital music and cheap systems it's still not the same as really sitting down with the right equipment and not trying to produce music on a PowerBook in your basement.

    Asbestos suit on!

Sadly this is the way it is around here. I'm surprised that people don't feel that proper compensation to an artist is a morally correct thing to do. All I have to say is that I hate to see the day when some of these people's wet dream of free media and endless touring comes true. If people think that contemporary music is a second-hand, sleezy, low-quality, low-brow affair today they ain't seen nothing yet.

With more and more MMORPG games coming into the market, and the quality of these games getting better and better, it's just a matter of time until a game comes along that will have enough appeal to give WoW some trouble.

Better != Appeal. As any number of fans of any form of entertainment and most typical merchandise can tell you; sales and popularity are not a true indicator of quality or talent.

As far as giving WoW some trouble? Who cares. If you're playing a game that you like it's a game that you like. As long as whatever MMORPG(s) anyone is playing aren't going under who cares about what WoW is doing? Aside from bean counters most people don't care who's the big kid on the block at the time. If you're playing WoW simply because it's fashionable that's pretty sad.

Chances are players will start leaving slowly for other games (most likely after a major patch release), rejoining the real world, etc, but Blizzard's time will come soon enough and chances are they will be their own downfall.

Actually, ask the people who've already left WoW to find out why they've left. The only former WoW addict that I know of left to play EQ2 and said that WoW became too tedious because of constant grouping and raids in the end game. She wanted to solo for the most part and enjoyed EQ2 because of it. I nearly game WoW a spin myself until I heard about the amount of raids and such. I just can not play a game on someone else's schedule and I enjoy soloing.

The sure way to tell if WoW is it's own worst enemy is to see if players are not as much looking for something new but getting bored with something old. Once people start talking about jumping ship with no lifeboat you know there are problems.

Not to even mention that OEM versions cost nowhere near the price of the retail box. There is no way that it's going to cost Dell 300 USD more per PC for even the best copy of Vista. No business would ever agree to that.

Don't confuse the slashdot population versus the general population. The general population never even got enough of a whiff of vista to stop buying PCs with it on it.

That's very bad for Dell's business, which sent them looking for alternatives.

It's called XP. If you think for one second that users who migrated from XP to vista and hated vista are more willing to go to an "unknown" OS versus going back to XP you are out of your mind. And frankly, aside from what's been posted here I don't know many people who have a problem with vista. I have a few friends running it and the only complaint I've heard at all is that one guy can't run an eight year old game on it. He's admitted to not really looking into getting it working outside of the standard install.

This is our chance to open up the desktop market; here's hoping we don't screw it up.

Yeah, good luck with that. Seriously. I have nothing against Linux but the fanboism is really starting to stink up the place. Do you honestly think that the Windows user who can't be bothered to download Linux is going to jump at the chance to buy a machine with it on? At least with the download Joe Sixpack has a Windows disk to fall back on if Linux turns out to be something that he simply doesn't want. With the Dell offer he's either going to have to put up with an OS that he was already too lazy to download or he's going to have to go Windows on a retail basis. Guess what kind of bitching and moaning that's going to cause.

There is enough stuff out there today for Joe to get his taste of Linux if he's interested. You may get people to buy these machines but don't count on many "switchers". Somehow I doubt the more vocal fanbois in this cause are going to take up the banner of actually shelling out the bucks. Mouthpieces normally stop when their toe touches the waters, so to speak.

the sfx in star wars were nothing short of staggering for the time.

You can only really say that in context with the number of special effects. Close Encounters came out the same year and if you were to put two snippets of both films side by side Close Encounters would win hands down. The effects in CEOTTK are clearly better. Superman came out a year later and the same could be said for it in the same context of doing more with the effects but simply having less of them. Ultimately it's an argument that has no clear winner aside from pointing to the budget of the film. Even then it's hard to win the argument that SW had "staggering" effects.

you are clearly about 18 years old and didnt see the original theatrical release.

Talk about an argument that got really old about two decades ago. Not everyone who walks that planet who was alive to see the originals (myself include, FYI) in 1977 latched onto Star Wars and held it high like a gift from God. Methinks that much of the wonderlust that still trails on from the original trilogy is more the smoke and mirrors of time over anything truely magical about these films. If you love it, you love it. I won't say that you're wrong. But to assume that because there are those of us (yes, I do mean myself included) who don't really go crazy over Star Wars are too young to recall the glory of Lucas is about as insightful as the Matrix fanbois who ran around for years shouting "If you didn't like the Matrix it's because you didn't understand the Matrix". It's annoying, it's petty elitism at it's worst and it's utterly false.

as such you have fuck all perspective on it.

Fantastic conclusion. What you're basically saying is that if you don't hold Star Wars on high as God's gift to sci-fi circa 1977 that you were either too young to experience it or that you have no appreciation for special effects? Does that mean that those 30-somethings today that may have just been old enough to remember Jedi in the theaters are saved from your self-righteous wrath? What does it say about those of us who did see it in the theaters who just weren't amazed by it to the point that 30 years later we can take it or leave it for what it is?

Get over it fanboi. The glory days of Lucas seem to have come to a screeching halt. The "staggering" effects of your little lovechild here lack the luster that you claim from movies made in the same couple of years. It's fine to be a fanboi on some levels but at some other point you have to turn around and understand that just because something is important to you doesn't mean it was the pinnacle of achievement.
