While I find any claims that the tidal locking of the planet makes it any better or worse for life dubious the surface temperatures in and of themselves don't fall outside of the only known working model.
Yeah, I think there is some confusion here. The MSNBC article states "If the planet has a rocky composition like Earth's, it would be 1.2 to 1.4 times as wide as our own planet, qualifying it as a "super-Earth.""
That's the problem with science articles on the general web, many skip facts that others contain. Even PhysOrg didn't seem to bother with this estimation but god only knows who's predicting this kind of thing too.
In any case, we are much too early on to think about sending anything it's way. We have so much we can do with observation today before we go launching anything. And in just a few years we'll gain even more insight from James Webb once it's in place. Let's no go off half cocked on this.
hawking was wrong. Any alien that is technologically able to do anything to us doesn't need for us to contact them. They already know we're here and if they want to pull some crap on humanity it will be done without our consent.
Let's be honest about this... There is no absolute deterrent to anything but at the same time we can't just sit on our thumbs and hope for the best. Education in the matters is already in place. Technology doesn't seem to provide a good solution yet. What else would you have people do to address the problem?
I'd really like to see you do a half-century in a pair of Fruit-of-the-Loom briefs and come back and tell us that those of us who wear spandex are just doing it because Lance Armstrong does.
I do understand where you're coming from and I wear BDU shorts over my riding shorts. I'm not trying to make a fashion statement but riding shorts do serve a real purpose.
So if you're not willing to pour a few hundred into a GPS that means that what you want serves "no good reason"? Huh? I guess people who use calculator apps on their cellphones also do it for "no good reason" if they don't go out and buy a TI-84 Silver Edition Plus. I guess some Slashdotters really have missed the point of a phone that runs apps.
Most bicyclists don't use GPS because they don't need it for navigation. The much more common reason to have a GPS tracking device is for ride statistics. This particular software seems to deal with preplanned routes that are biker friendly and I'd like to think that if cellular connections are needed for this that the routes were already tested.
Who really cares what the man on the street thinks? They have no real power to do anything about this one way or another.
Now, for the people who have the understanding of this kind of thing they know how to ready these reports without getting their panties in a bunch. They're the people who matter. They're the ones who are going to determine what should be done when. Or do you think we should not report on any information if it doesn't involve the mass population? In that case most news websites can be boiled down to about three stories a week.
I don't know... I always thought it was Phil's job to keep people up to date on this kind of thing. You know... "Bad Astronomy", Astronomy news. See any connection to the theme here?
Certainly much better than the number of political articles that make the front page here who's only real purpose is to start flame wars.
These types of general warnings have been going on for a while now with no fear or panic from anyone. If nothing else this brings up a potential test bed for trying any solution we have to this problem. These kinds of solutions don't just roll out over night.
Any application worth it's bandwidth is going to go cross platform in time. Android has a lot of ground to cover and if the tablets get any real marketshare it will take off. I don't need a culture with only one or two platforms. This isn't 1982 where the home PC market had serious restrictions based on platform.
Cutting oil consumption is the solution. By boycotting BP you only hurt the local station owner who has no fault in this. BP will always have a market for what they're pulling from the ground.
When they talk about potential loss it seems that they are talking about in the current flow of oil. This was a new well that, AFAIK, never produced a single barrel of oil that was refined. So if the world's oil producers are pumping 80 million barrels a day and they lose 10% of that it's a drain on the system, when a new and unproven well doesn't produce it doesn't cause harm to the expected daily supply.
I know where you're coming from and I can understand some of the confusion but I find it reasonable that this well didn't mean much in the grand scheme of things. Not to mention that it's the industries own problem and jacking up prices because of it would likely get them in even bigger problems where things like wars and acts of God are normally winked at as a reason to jack up the price of crude.
Assuming that the 4.9 million barrels of oil number can be believed? That's the US consumption in about 6 hours. Pretty much a drop in the bucket when it comes right down to it.
Just look at Faisal Shazad, the guy from Connecticut who tried to blow up Times Square. He tried to build his bomb with a toy clock and M80 firecrackers. He had a business degree.
Not the constant erosion of citizens rights, nope. Not the constant and gratuitous government spending. Not the off-shoring of nearly all our industry because we'd rather have a cheaper item regardless of the human cost overseas. Not the constant War-State mentality where we have to fight "Terrorism", "Drugs", "Copyright", etc, etc, and again, pay for it.
Well, in all fairness, Neither side is willing to do anything about all of that either.
I just get so tired of hearing this BS major party inspired bullshit.
Fixed that for you. It's already pretty easy to see that both sides are pretty much doing the same thing but using different excuses as to why they do it. Why bother acting like this is a right wing vs left wing problem? The powers that be, regardless of their party, have a common goal and, unless you're one of their power elite, you're not included on the winning side of things. Anyone following a major party at this point is fodder to the parties' leadership and a betrayer of the country's citizens.
What about non-cellular devices? What if manufacturers would also start supporting laptops with this technology? There is a lot of opportunity here. It's time for something of this nature to come about. The wireless aspect of it is a bonus to the universal charging station.
But normal chargers should have been standardized long ago
Coulda, shoulda, woulda. The fact is that they're not. With this is place you'd finally have the standard you've been looking for.
Not to mention that with this in place you're going to have a lot more charging options. Hotel rooms, offices and cruise ships will doubtlessly have these so that you're not having to plug in your charger which means that you won't have to worry about lugging 4 different chargers and then have to find 4 available outlets for them.
Be a naysayer but if this ever does take off it's going to be a boost for the way we use mobile devices since we will have more charging options with less hassles. I'd buy it, that's for sure.
I kind of makes me think of Bordered in Black by Niven.
Why? We have life in both conditions on Earth.

Do you have a better solution?

If it weren't for meat eaters eating this veal they wouldn't be snatched away in the first place.
As a lacto-ovo vegetarian I think dairy is ok.

In all fairness, it was a very economical bomb.
The guys building the bombs aren't the same guys who are doing the bombings.

LOL. If not for the lack of mod points...
If what you and a few of the other posters are saying is true that means that no amount of public domain releases will stop what ASCAP does.
If you're for releasing to the public domain then why do you care if the RIAA survives? Think about it.
