Right. What I meant was an OS to compete with Windows for the consumer market, which is what some people seem to be suggesting. I wouldn't entirely rule out Google someday releasing something Linux-related to the OS community (if they haven't already), but I can't see them releasing an entire OS or Linux distro, just by itself. What would the point be? That's not their thing.
What they have done is make their search appliances. I assume that they run on Linux or *BSD. But they don't give those away, nor the software that runs on them.
I really don't think MS could get away with that. It wouldn't take long for a techie on here to dig out the code and prove that MS is doing it, and then it wouldn't take long for the media to pick it up and plaster it all over the Net and TV, etc. That would kill what's left of MS's image in the eyes of corporations and many individuals, not to mention anti-trust implications.
Right now, Bill Gates is in his office screaming at his top-level henchmen. He's ordering them to do whatever it takes to kill Google, just as he ordered them to do whatever it takes to kill Netscape back in 1997.
Good post, BTW.
As I understand it, MS killed Netscape by giving away IE and bundling IIS with Windows. How could Netscape survive if they had to give away their product for free to compete? They weren't a services company like Google (not mostly, anyway).
Google is different. Google gives all of its products (services) away for free already (not counting its appliances, which are niche products). The end-users get all of Google's services for free. So how can Microsoft kill Google? How can Microsoft take away their revenue stream? Just as MS has critical mass with Windows, Google has critical mass with search and AdWords. How can either overcome the other in their respective areas? (Not that I think Google is going to make an OS; that would make no sense at all to me.)
I've been a paid FastMail member for over a year and a half now, and they are the best. I host three domains with them. I use IMAP with Thunderbird and their Web interface (which is excellent; I've designed several custom stylesheets for it as well). They are very up-front about status, uptime, problems, etc. Very reliable, and they continue to improve their services and Web interface. Not long after Gmail was introduced, FM increased their storage and bandwidth levels for no additional charge, and even gave paid members free extra bandwidth (the kind that you keep until you use).
For Web hosting, here are some you might consider:
www.glypto.com (no phone support, but very responsive online support, EXTREMELY polite and helpful [they've been over-the-top polite to me and explained *nix things in-depth even when I asked things that would frustrate me if I were them], and excellent reliability)
www.hostrocket.com
www.registerfly.com (domain registration and Web hosting; their domain registration service is excellent; can't vouch for web hosting, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was good)
What I've done is use partimage to image the entire partition across a network (wireless, in this case) to another computer. partimage has built-in compression to help reduce space requirements on the receiving disk. It takes a few hours, at least, but it is worth it. If anything goes wrong, boot Knoppix again and use partimage to restore the entire partition from the copy on the networked computer.
#2. Ctrl+Alt+Del->Task Manager. Microsoft, in their wisdom, chose to have Task Manager launch after Windows returns to running whatever program is causing the system to freeze up. So, often, Task Manager won't even load. Sure, you can click Task Manager after you Ctrl+Alt+Del, but then Windows returns to running the bad program!
#3. "End Process"...sometimes it works, sometimes you get "Access is denied"
#4. "drwtsn32 -p pid" If the computer's responsive enough to bring up a command prompt, you can try this. Sometimes that works.
#5. The Reset button (why cycle the power when you can do a hard reset?). If you're lucky, Windows will boot without the dreaded "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL" error, which requires multiple reboots and/or booting into safe mode to fix, and then a final reboot if your kernel CPU usage remains at ~60% when all processes are at idle usage./little rant
No, you misunderstand. Spam e-mails DO originate in China. If you actually report some of them with SpamCop, you'll see for yourself.
If you want a really bad one, look up wholesalebandwidth.com. From what I can tell (and I'm no expert on it, so I could be wrong), it's a high-tier ISP-level spam host. Meaning, they have a backbone connection and can spam all they want because their backbone contracts don't care and they own their own connection.
I'm familiar with that model, but that doesn't seem to be exactly what Mozilla is using. After all, Firefox 1.0 was built from the branch, but only the branch had things like the extension manager. The trunk didn't have it. So the stable 1.0 was built from the part of the tree with more features. So, uh...?
Can someone explain the point of having a trunk and a branch if you have to backport (proper term for this?) code from the branch to the trunk? Why not just keep going with the branch? I'm sure there's a good reason, but I haven't found a good explanation yet.
Unless you're also encrypting your messages, you shouldn't seriously count on disabled logging to protect your privacy. Most IM protocols send messages through the server nowadays, so there's one vulnerability. And if it's plain text, it could be vulnerable to snooping along the network path as well.
Seems like what is needed is a client-side app to take the first X number of Google results and do a case-sensitive search on the client computer, instead of on Google's servers. Sure, it'd take a while to download the first X number of results, but it would work if you really needed a more specific search.
That is simply absurd. Have you no free will? Have you no self-control? Are you a conscious, thinking human being, or are you simply an animal who does nothing but react to his instincts?
What the anti-choice people don't like is that to them, an abortion is going against god's will to be fruitful and multiply.
Maybe that's what some people think. What I think is that the Bible says, "Thou shalt not kill," and abortion is, by definition, killing.
People who willfully have sex and then have an abortion because they don't want to deal with a child--the consequences of their actions--are completely irresponsible. It's that simple.
And I think it's ok to classify all puritanical Christian right-wingers as morons, because they've made the choice to believe in something that contradicts itself, based off of the knowledge of what their parents have passed down, without ever turning a critical eye to their own beliefs, and the book their beliefs are based on.
Nice stereotype. I don't mean to be rude, but you truly have no idea what you are talking about. If you're interested in some Bible study, feel free to e-mail me and I'll be glad to help in any way I can: 64xxh5jotu001@sneakemail.com (Sneakemail is great for stopping spam).
The Bible does not state that, "it's perfectly fine to stone people to death." That was in the Old Testament; it is not the law that we are told to live under today.
John 1:1-11
But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them,
"If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
"No one, sir," she said.
"Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."
"...and threaten them with eternal torture." If you love the Lord and serve Him faithfully, you have nothing to fear.
Cool, thanks for the reply. BTW, this is off-topic, but who's the girl in that movie you have on the screen? I know a girl who looks almost exactly like her.
Originally released seven years ago, in 1997. Since then the editing community has made levels that far surpass the original levels, has made mods that completely change the game, and even discovered hidden support for 16-bit textures in the engine. It's still being edited today. Just check out www.massassi.net.

What if you sprayed it with a polyurethane clear-coat? Do you think that would protect it enough so that it would last a while?

So, how long until there's DeAACS@Home? Since it is going to use 128-bit AES...
How do you keep your mail server from being blacklisted? Won't the mail relay testers think it's an open relay and blacklist it?
Also...

I've been using Tb since 0.6 with an IMAP account. Simply turn on these two options:
"When I delete a message: Move it to the Trash folder"
"Clean up ('Expunge') Inbox on Exit"
When you close Tb or leave the folder, it will purge messages marked as deleted.

Most IM protocols send messages through the server nowadays, so there's one vulnerability. And if it's plain text, it could be vulnerable to snooping along the network path as well.
Haven't they had that for years?

How long does it take to charge those batteries?
