I work with os x standard and server almost daily. I meant the server edition rather then addition... OS X has several version is all I was pointing out in my previous post. Yes it costs tons more... but thats not related to anything as does windows server.
I have xp pro... Also there is a higher version of os x, the server addition. But regular also gives us apache and with some modifications we can easily get php and mysql for development. It's not ready for production use, i use a rented linux box for webserving.
But thats not really a plus with os x because configuring php and more importantly sql to work correctly with the rest takes some time. You can also get an executable from places like phpdev that will install apache, php, and sql on your system in just a series of clicks.
Hmm... can you enlighten me on the overclocking of macs?
It's getting really easy with pcs nowadays to the point i can just go to the bios and set my multiplier (athlon xp tbred cpu) and fsb speed. Before i had to mess with jumpers are dip switches. I've never seen such mechanisms with macs. Is it done with software or are there jumpers i'm not aware of?
Look at what nasa and what apples uses. Low end dells with slow pc2100 ram for comparison. NASA compared that with a product not even out yet. The PC you built for $3000 will beat the mac that won't be out for months. The 3.2 ghz p4 has the new 800 mhz fsb that the 2.66 ghz one compared in the article didn't.
In reality by sept. we'll have the athlon64 and possibly intel's prescott. So no matter how you look at it, this benchmark is irrelevant unless and pc's are still cheaper.
I'm sorry if i seem a bit agitated but i'm getting tired of all this misinterpretation. If you read that article it basically says that the p4 2.66 ghz (old gen as the 3.0 ghz 800 mhz fsb stuff came out some time ago) is still beating a new chip that will come from apple. I think there were some tests in which apple won but most were when the dual cpus were turned on.
EVERYONE should know that by now that intel makes processors that do less per mhz but to reach a higher mhz level. Infact even p3's do more per mhz then p4's not to mention all of amd's cpu's since the original athlon. This benchmarks clearly shows that apple doesn't have a chance again the current 3.2 ghz p4 cpu's with 800 mhz buses. If you take overclocking into the picture (can't oc macs) then apples are just blown out of the water.
Besides in the next few months the biggest cpu launches from both amd and intel since a long time ago will happen.
Also if you had a previous version of windows then you simply purchase the upgrade which is around $200 and if you find some decent dealers it can be had for a lot less.
OS X costs around $100 for almost each upgrade. I started out with 10.0 which was extremely buggy. It came with my G4 which also had os 9. At the time i just used os 9. 10.1 was free i think and it should be as it's just some bug fixes. 10.2 costs another $120 something but it was the first really useable versions. Almost crash free for the first time. I haven't bothered with 10.3, yet... is it free:)
But the software cost really isn't big because if you go amd then you'll get huge savings over apple no matter what. XP would have to cost at least $500 for macs to be a better price value.
I say pull out right now, and tell them if they rebuild to be asshats... we will be back... but not as police.
Couldn't agree more. So far it doesn't seem like most iraq's are totally against the US being there but there are a LOT of people. But if this changes we are in deep shit.
That is only for large sites as well. Most smaller sites and server renters usually pay around $.50 to $1 per gb. Also most sites don't make more then 1 CPM nowadays which is $.001 per hit.
TI geforces are older gen tech. If it costs $400 you will probably be a lot better if you find a rad 9600/9500 pro under $250 which is faster then this geforce ti (hopefully of the 4xxx series, anything lower is really old). The 9000's are budget cards for the pc and are usually under $80 bucks. They are also slower then the older radeon 8500.
Billy G might be giving one entity 50 mil but he also has the gates foundation which has 21 billion and gives at the minimum 1 billion (5% is required by the goverment). I doubt Bill Gates is making $1 billion a year anymore. That was in the 90's when he also didn't give much to charities.
Hmm... I see things a bit differently from you form where I stand. Physically the chinese and indian's are not any worse of in smartness then us and even if we are different it's by a vary small and possibly incalculable margin. But what I think is really holding them back is the poverty and lack of quality education for the majority of the people.
I'm sure plenty of educated people there are hungry for progress too but i don't think the extra population will help them right now as much as you think.
I don't think we are anywhere near ready for such a form of cooperation. It's obvious that if humanity worked together efficiently we might be able to accomplish some awesome goals but aren't we as a race too immature to handle such a thing?
Just look at the UN... way too many conflicts of interest. I dont' think that such a group of countries/rivals will ever work together in such a way for a long time. But then and again rivalry can also be very good. What do you guys think?
I mean they also cheat or "optimize" using drvers for certain benchmarks and games that in many cases reduce the image quality of the games (why i call it cheating) without informing the consumer or developers. I'm not singleing out nvidia here as i'm sure others do it too (ATI was also caught doing a minor cheat this year and some major ones a few years ago).
Wouldn't this be a major reason to hide/close your source.
With dell you usually get a office suite and then the xp os. Which is at least $150 (if you use linux and only other free software you can get around this) and also did you remember to add the price of the monitor that dell usually bundles? There's also little things people forget like a decent heatsink, cables here and there. A lot of people also think they can get a way with a cheap case and powersupply. But that will bite you in the long run.
Also there's the thing of amd versus intel. If you use midrange and lower amd processors they are a lot cheaper then intels. The higher end processors from both companies are close to being equal in price.
If i do take overclocking into account i can build a monstrously faster computer with the same amount of money though:) with special procs like the JIUHB XP 1700+ (tbred b, 1.5 volt version) a nf2 mobo and some good ram.
No matter how many system builders will brag to you it is almost impossible to beat pc manufacturers in the sub $1200 category. I looked into this myself and realized that buying individual components at their cheapest will not get me a computer with a greater value then that provided by a large manufacturer. Extremetech.com also did a study on this recently and came to the same conclusions.
I build my own systems only because I have older components that i can reuse. I almost never build a machine completely with all new parts. My machines basically improves slowly as technology does with me upgrading things slowly.
and apples are not... i've no clue how this new platform will perform but their previous best... the dual 1.3 ghz powermac was 2-3 times slower in graphics against a cheaper priced alienware 3.0ghz laptop (p4, with hyperthreading, old 533mhz bus)
Then your not very good at specing are you? Sorry if that seemed like a personal attack but a dvd/cdrw combo drive only costs $60 and the rest of the comparible emacs components are easily under $500. Now dell has these super cheap machines for like $499 that will be almost twice as fast as the emac.
I'm a mac+pc user, and most other mac users seem to overestimate the power of their macs greatly.
I'm somewhat familiar with how networks work but how exactly does your isp know what files your downloading? The only thing their routers see are packets moving up and down. It would take quite a bit to process all those packets from everyone themselves and store all the logs.
Mostly good points but does neo really count? I mean it's not in the 'real' world but rather a simulation of earth now. The guy even flies:)
Also about yoda... what if he wasn't using just his muscles for all that movement? what if he was using the force... the war could be over tomorrow... (slaps self out of matrix)
I meant he's THE jedi master and he can move objects many times his wait by manipulating the force. I'm not a huge star wars buff but can't he manipulate the force around him to move his body or simply aid them in some way?
I believe the new nvidia audio chipsets are thx certified and come with digital out (optional).
it's been a while but when i was trying out os x installs and version i remember entering serial numbers. Might have been the server edition...
In any case buy xp pro cds and it will work on all pc's that can run xp as long as you have the correct number of licenses.
I work with os x standard and server almost daily. I meant the server edition rather then addition... OS X has several version is all I was pointing out in my previous post. Yes it costs tons more... but thats not related to anything as does windows server.

probably should have said all stock owners would make money off this.
:).
BTW, your quite brave... admitting that you own ms stock on slashdot.org
Isn't that true for all stock owners though? Bill Gates was obviously received the largest benefit but isn't the only one to get rich off this.

If you payed attention to any hardware comparisons of the latest macs (g4's verses p4's) then you'd notice that it was always getting trounced.
Macs are great but hardware performance isn't the reason.

Everyone knows that Eva's only exist to help us rid evil angels trying to make contact with Adam.
