I work for a company that puts computers in the most hostile enviroment in the world: Bars.. we install boxes running the Audio and video software for all types of bars..
Now.. if we are lucky, they get a designated location in an audio rack somewhere along side the amps of the dj which get air cooled. Most of the time however, the get dumped somewhere under the counter, together with the rest of stuff a bar owns.. standing there, humming, sucking in the hot air the cooling of the tap, amplifiers or other electronics throw out, next to an over for heating a pizza etc..
They got all sorts of substances leaking in (water, beer, coke, orange juice and the occasional tomato sauce..). we even have the occasional real bug: fried cockraoch..
But still.. when looking at the figures ( using only a class hardware.. white boxes have a higer failure rate), they actually do well... most boxes have 2 failures every 4 years.. 90% of the time, this is because of heating issues or too much beer (for the computer OR the bartender)...
I've known multiple occassions where computers kept running even though you could not touch them barehanded anymore due to heat...
In the end.. spending millions of dollars on cooling something that CAN handle higer temps and might cause slighty more failure, means the millions you save should easily pay some extra stuff for failover to cath those, slighty higher, failures...

I guess it's all about trust. I too use Direct Debt (Belgium) for most of my important uttilities (water, electric, phone, gas)... But we have many different options. For example: most uttilitie companies just direct debt a fix amount you have agreeded with them when closing your contract (for example $ 120 a month).. every 6 months they send you an "update" with a calculation of your real usage and give you the money you payed too much back OR send you the bill for the remaining amount (can be direct debt too if you want).. this way, the suprises are kept at an absolute minimum.. For the few errors i have heared about, it always was corrected very soon and honest ( as in: putting your money back on the date they took it off so you don't loose your interests..
For less known companies which you doubt.. you can use electronic billing where you see the bill on your electronic banking, can quickly check the details and pay it with 1 click.. Then again.. i've never hearded horror stories about getting the money from different accounts if you don't have enough money on the original one.. if the funds are insufficient, the direct debt just bounces like a cheque and that's it.
Standing on both sides of the line ( my company also uses direct debt to get our money from the customer).. i can tell you it is a time saver for us AND , more important.. get's us the money in time.. if you want to pay manual, there is an extra fee attached to it simply because 90% of our B2B customers simply pay late.. not enough to ask for interessts but enough to be painfull for a startup.. (taking 35 days instead of 28).. we often really need our cash to pay our own bills.. and it turns into a spiral at the end.. our customers pay late so we have to pay late...
What i wanted to add about The Netherlands ( since we do business there too).. They have an extra motivation to do things right.. I a company bills wrong a couple of times , their right to direct debt can be revoked by the bank until they sort out the problem.. now if you are a company in the Netherlands with a couple of thousand customers and you screw up a couple of times.. you'll be very sorry to notice that all of a sudden, you have to bill all these customers manually and try to get your money from them... believe me that this is a REAL motivator to check your process and your code 20 times before using it in production...
Apparently "Social Security" in the U.S. is only about retirement. Let me tell you a little fantasy story about Belgium.. A country that has Social Security down to an art...
When i get sick, i go to the doctor and just get treated.. (it REALLY does not mather what i have.. from the flue to cancer etc).. my doctors visit costs me about 20 ( that's $30 more or less)... if i have to stay home.. i still get paid.. gradually this lowers to 50% of my wage (over 2 years)
If i get on disabbility.. i still get paid..
If i break an arm, my kid breaks an arm or ANYONE else breaks an arm.. it get's fixed.. not visa, private healthcare blah blah.. you just walk in the E.R., and they fix it.. (had this 2 years ago.. paid a whopping 90 in total for the whole fixing...
Then.. when the time has come to retire.. i get paid 75% of my last paycheck every month.. for the rest of my life..
and ok.. i pay about 45% of my income to taxes (this percentage is relative to your wage).. and chances are, i'm not the only one benefitting from this cause the amount i pay will probably only get back to me when i get really sick (which i don't really plan:p) OR when i would get to go until 130 years old (which is higly unlikely aswell;-) )
The rest of the cash go to the other, less fortunate.. people without jobs who still get paid a "survival" paycheck.. this is called being social.. It's pretty damn stupid to say that you should not help someone else.. cause you know what ? If people get pushed into a position where they cannot get decent healthcare,cannot support their family because a streak of bad luck ( 9/11 made a lot of people lose their jobs over here).. then they probably start finding other ways to get their primary needs satisfied (house, food) etc... which in a lot of cases is the criminal circuit..
do you honestly think this is cheaper on society ? Who pays the extra cops you need ? Who pays healt insurrance and how much ? I preffer to be social to other people in my country ANY given day, knowing for sure that our system will prevent someone from dying, just because they did not have the cash to pay healt inssurance.. or that someone who had a accident and cannot go to work anymore, does not have to be lying somewhere in the gutter but gets supported by the system.. or like the veterans in the US who just get dumped after they "protected the freedom"...and finally.. that when i, or my family get sick.. we get treated and not asked for a visa card first.. (This happened to a collegue of mine who got an allergic reaction to some food while we were in the U.S. he could not breath anymore, we rushed him to the E.R. where they refused treatment until we could come up with a visa card..)
Social security is indeed paying for yourself AND others.. but i bet you will look at it differently when you or your family suddenly needs a 300k treatment and can't come up with thecash...

I don't really agree.. ever been drinking after skiing in swiss ? That's no german , french or italian.. It's gernchalian at best...
