    Tell them how to solve the problem of trading unDRMed files online and they would gladly sell you unDRMed content.

    You talk as if open source coders have your best interests in mind. If they produce inferior software, then this certainly isn't true. If it's not cost effective to hire people to fix the problem, and no one else is working on making it do what you want, then it may as well be proprietary, for all the good the open code does you.

    How does making a choice cause freedom to get lost. Isn't that the definition of freedom? It's not like people are making choices that limit other people's freedom, they're simply making the choices they think are the best for themselves in terms of the software they prefer to use.

    RMS's mantra limits your choices. Thankfully, he doesn't have the power to make his mantra into laws. So, he must convince people that he is right, and they have the choice to agree or not, as it should be.

    Longhorn has been in development for years. Just because Apple is releasing their latest OS earlier doesn't mean they were first with an idea. They release OS updates twice as often as MS in general. There's nothing revolutionary about either Tiger or Longhorn anyway, so I'm not sure what the big deal is.

    If it will 'just work' in the future, we would see some of the 'just working' in Windows XP.

    But sometime you need to scroll down a list, no... the other list. Yeah, that one. Select 'properties'-- what? No, right click on the icon, and select 'properties'. And then... no wait it's not here. Click 'cancel'. Ok, now click 'cancel' again. Now, hit the 'x' in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

    Now go to "start: settings: Control Panel", click on "Users Accounts", click on "change account", click on your username. What? No, I don't know why they have a .NET password in here. Yeah, it has something to do with that "Windows Messenger" that keeps poping up in then system tray. Now click on 'Change my name", and then change your name.

    Sometimes it just works."

    Better than Windows98 or MacOS 9, where I can delete someone elses file, and it just works.

    After upgrading our Solaris boxes (with Windows pc cards running office) to Linux boxes, we experimented with using Open Office. The general consensus is that people here hate Open Office. These are engineers too, with no particular allegiance to either OSS or MS. OO is not very compatible with MS Office in rendering documents. We've decided now to run Windows under vmware on the Linux boxes, and are pursing this avenue in hopes of improving our productivity.

    You still haven't explained why you want to put the kids at a disadvantage by having no exposure to MS Office. Sure it may not be a requirement, but the extra things on a resume are often what makes a difference in getting hired when there are more applicants than jobs.

    OO is not 100% compatible with MS Office. Although files generated by MS Office are readable by OO, they often do not render correctly in OO.

    How is it a selfless act to work on something you love to do and get paid for it? Many people making the major contributions to OSS are paid by groups such as OSDL, or companies such as IBM.

    RTFA. Don't rely on biased /. posts. The opposing viewpoint is that the NOAA is wasting taxpayer money providing these services for free. Their arguemnet is the public is better served paying less taxes for service they don't necessarily need.

    The front page post on /. links to an article, and yet gives a completely lopsided summary of the article.

    Whether or not you agree with the opposing viewpoint, you should make some effort to report it. Michael Moore would be proud of this lopsided reporting that he claims is documentary work, and now apparently passes for news on /.

    Actually, to clarify, Libertarians believe a business owner can hire and fire anyone for any reason, provided it doesn't violate an existing contract with the employee. They believe making rules about who you can hire and fire is a violation of the business owner's freedom. So, theoretically, a bigot could discriminate against gay people in hiring practices. On the other hand, Libertarians would have no problem with gay marriage between consenting adults. So when you talk about a gay-rights bill, it depends what you mean. Gay people would have the same rights as everyone else in a Libertarian society.
