I am soooo freaking tempted... there is also a 479 with a 19" lcd... mmmmmm.
It makes you wonder that if dell puts out those machines at that price, why cant we see cheaper prices for slower machines. For sure Dell is still making money at 349 for a full system.
Damn I was looking to upgrade my box buying a mother board and a amd64 and that is already at almost US$ 300...
Well, I typed and address from the satellite view and gave me the wrong location but within 2 street city blocks. However when I tried from the normal map view it gave me the correct address.
Why such a big fuzz for electric cars? they are feeding from the grid that is powered by fossil fuels. That the fossil fuel plants are more efficient than car engines? well yeah but by the time you transport the energy (heat + electromagnetic losses) + charge the battery (heat losses, batery inefficiency) + feed computer + electric motor (more heat and electromag losses), you end up with the same efficiency than a normal car or even less. Then you have to add the enviromental cost for building all the batteries/fuel cells in terms of energy. (freaking cars cost more than 1 million!)
And then a friend that works for a new wind power generator turbine was telling me that they were planning on putting some of those on top of the AC units of some buildings and use the convection currents to generate electricity!. Cmon!! if you think that is clever go and ask for a return of money of all your thermodynamics class.
Speaking of wind turbines... well if you build enough to feed the power grid by themselves then they will mess up weather conditions by disturbing the wind patterns. Same for ocean waves or ocean currents.
Solar panels take more energy to build that the one that they will produce in their life time.
Everybody talks about hydrogen and get all exited about it. Well where are you getting the hydrogen from? usualy water so people gets even more exited!. "woow energy from water" Well getting hydrogen out of the water requires huge amounts of electricity to break the link between the hydrogen and oxigen. And that same energy is then released when we burn the hydrogen or put it in a fuel cells.
Methanol from plants? gime a break!!! how much land do you need to clear to grow sugar cane using pesticides altering weather too. We will have to grow sugar cane in all earth surface to provide the amount of energy that we are going to need.
It seems that the only current solutions are:
-make internal combustion engines more efficient and increase hybrid useage
-Nuclear power (what to do with nuclear waste for the next couple of million years?)
The way I see it, oil and gas production will start to decline sharply in about 50 years and then huge wars for oil will happen (they already started!!!coughiraqcough) and energy demands from places like china and india will exponentially grow at the same time.
Not a very bright future if we dont find a real energy alternative that does not mess up earth environment.
Get yourself a wolf and let your kids play with it!
ps: Actually, dogs do come from wolfs, they just have mutated into tamer creatures. Secondary effects of the mutation have been flappy ears, smaller teeth and... smaller brains (they dont neet all that procesing power if they dont hunt anymore).
Well, our ancestors were only a couple of million in the whole planet. Now we are in the billions so we need to think more about nature-balance.
did you read? http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/02/11/02 55238&tid=153&tid=103&tid=14/
Also, the most probable theory on how dogs turned into humans pets is that it happened by accident when wolfs had to become tamer to eat from the human garbage. Theories that talk about how our ancestors went and kidnap a puppy wolf and domesticate it make no sense. In that time you would be pretty busy just hunting, mating, fighting to mate and escaping predators (being a geek by then must have sucked big time). Domesticating a pet would take a lot of resources, so its more probable it happened by accident.
I do not know about the theories on how we domesticated cows or other animals that we eat and you mention. but it seems to me that would happen after we developed agriculture and got some time extra??? (just speculating here)
I seriously think that octopuses belong to the sea and they are not pets. I consider pets dogs and cats because they have been genetically modified (by us trought thousands of years) to be our companions.
Please leave the octopuses, lizards, snakes, iguanas, guacamayas, cacatuas, monkeys and others where they belong.
What about Slashdot?
That thing sucks so many hours from my daily job that I do not even want to count them.
One time I was running some 20 min simulations and I realized that 20 min were equivalent to a "brief" review of Slashdor.
I wish I could turn it off
What a lack of self control damn
Well, it happened to me yesterday. I got home and my computer was off. Tried to turn in on and dead... pfff. Now there is an article in Slashdot about that, funny.
Anyhow, when I turn on the power supply, I got the blinking lights on the keyboard which tells me there is stand-by power. But I soon as I press the MOBO power button, I got about 1/3 sec power where all fans go on and then everything shuts down. No signal on monitor screen or anything. I removed all components from the power but the mobo and same...
I opened the power supply but nothing was exploded or burned.
I dont have a secondary machine that I can use as a test dummy. So, is there a way to tell if the power source is toasted? I was cheking the ATX pin connectors but not sure what terminals should I jump to turn it on.
I would probably have to go to the store and get a new one to test it... bumer.
I used before an nvidia MX440 with personal cinema. kind of old but the 3d worked fine in linux. Personal Cinema sucked because there was no linux support for the tv part. Windows was fine.
I upgrade to a radeon 9600 pro and it has been only headaches since then:
- Installing 3d acceleration in linux is really hard.
- I got an additional ati tv card that I installed, after a couple of days any 3d application had really bad texture corruption. I wrote to ATI and they replace my 9800pro card (with no proof of purchase because I lost the recipt.)
- The tv card was uninstalled for a long time, but I installed again and boooom... really bad 3d screen corruption. I turn off my machine and the 9800 was fine after a restart but I removed the tv card. Now ATI asked me to sent the tv card back. (again without recipt).
- Even in simple 2D screens I got screen corruptions.
- I did not do any overclocking to the card.
- Everytime i search for problem on 9800 it seems that they have the tendency of running too hot and people install additional coolers. But why do I have to expend more money in coolers if I already pay for the 9800 pro???
It seems to me that ATI is aware that some of their cards are a POS because they keep sending me RMA forms (return forms) at any complain I send.
I want to go back to nvidia:( but that will require another 200US$:(
Altough I think the 9800 ATI card sucks, the support has been OK.
I looked at the pdf that shows how the shock waves propagate inside the engine. However the angle of those shockwaves changes with the speed of the plane.
They had the same problems with the sr-71 so the engine cone moves back and forth until the appropiate shock wave would form inside the engine. If the shock wave is not in the appropriate position then the combustion inside the engine stops and I dont think is easy to restart an engine at mach 3.
Anyhow, can please somebody give me an insight of the inner workings of the engine? One solution is that the plane would fly at a constant speed so the angles are always the same but that does not seem very practical.
The speed of sound in a gas is related to the temperature of the gas and the gas properties molecular weight and heat capacity (cp/cv).
The relationship is:
c = sqrt(j * R * T / M)
where:
c = speed of sound
j = ratio of heat capacity (cp/cv)
R = Universal gas constant
T = Temperature (for gases always use absolute temperature)
M = Molecular weight
The Mach number is the ratio of the speed of an object over the speed of sound of the medium that the object is moving trough.
The X-43A will be released at 40,000 ft and climb to 110,000. I am not very sure about the temperature at this altitude but I think is about -100 C or 173K. At that temperature speed of sound is:
264 m/sec
So Mach 10 would be:
2640 m/sec or 5900 mph
If X-43 could fly that fast lets say at, 1000 ft, mach 10 would be about 3400 m/s or 7600 mph. Unfortunately the air density at 1000 ft would not allow X-43 to go that fast.

Yes, its Colombia! I agree and I also agree people should use correct spelling.
