Right... have you tried to buy PC100 memory? freaking expensive...
    US$70 for 256MB pc100
    vs
    US$70 for 1GB pc3200

I am stuck with a Piii 450 because I want to upgrade the memory but its pc100 :(. Its probably faster to upgrade to a socket A... oh but wait... I really liked the Duron 1.8 for a cheap system. however all socket A is gone..gone...gone and we are left with expensive low end procesors. A year ago I was able to build systems with the Duron 1.8+mobo+512MB for about 110 US$. now the cheapest processors available start at around 80US$ + mobo 50US$ + memory 40US$ = US$170! for the lowest end possible. I tought computers should get cheaper with time!.

Why do you belive that the fridge does not use any or very little electricity?

The AC units are designed to cool air and are very efficient at that. fridges are design for something else and you will end up using more electricity. The cooling unit of fridge will be running all the time if you run pipes inside of it. In addition, the fridge is design to cool things slowly and very good insulation to keep them cool. The water will be cooling very slow.
Also, the fridge is a heat pump that pumps heat from inside the fridge into the back radiator so actually your room is getting hotter while inside the fridge is getting colder (the AC has to pump out that heat outside your house. When you turn on your oven, the AC has to pump all the heat generated by the oven!!!).
Try leaving the door of the fridge open for a week and check your electricity bill.
You seriously need to review your thermodynamics and specially the second law. (and i need to review my spelling lool)

The problem with the swamp cooler is that it will dramatically increase the humidity. (no free lunch)

You could have a system where:
    1. isolated reservoir of water
    2. pump the water outside of the house into a swamp radiator with a fan (like a radiator with wet rags on top blown by the fan maybe?
    3. water goes inside the house to the second radiator with another fan
    4. water returns to reservoir

You could even remove the pump and just use density differences due to temp

  10. It will not be cheap to run it on Homebrew Air Conditioning for Under $25 · · Score: 1

It might be cheap to construct but not to run:
    - You will need a huge amount of ice that takes a lot of energy if you want to make it in your refrigerator.
    - You will need a huge amount of water to run the system if using tab water $$$. - More electricity to run the fan.

If you are close to a lake or the ocean you might have an alternative but it will need a lot of piping and a pump (which usually runs on electricity).

My dad worked on a mine where they did not have electricity for refrigeration and the place was really hot (in the 40C or 105+F for the "different ones"). You would not have any cold drinks for lunch or dinner, so they would put water in bottles in a shadowed area and then cover them with wet rags. The water would evaporate from the rags taking some heat with it and cool it. It was great for drinking and taking cold showers.

You could have a system with no ice and a fan blowing on some wet rags or something. The only problem is that you would dramatically increase the humidity of the place (read as there is no free lunch... or is it beer?)

It turned out the power supply was bad from the beginning and it damaged the hard drive. After a new hard drive, the power supply finally went puff.

Ohh. and before that, i had an nvidia 440 and upgrade to a pro 9800 pro (see the pattern? 9800 pro requires a looot of power) so i had to upgrade the drivers in linux from nvidia to ati and for that i pretty much had to reinstall linux. Then the 9800 went puff. While I was getting the RMA i used the nvidia for a while. I tried to do a quick change to the drivers in linux and i figured that it would be a huge deal so i did not bother and use the generic in the mean time. Switching drivers in windows xp was a breaze compared to linux.

Now everything is up and running but i ended up with this funky taste in my mouth from reinstalling linux to the point that i wanted.

I just go trough the list of programs that i need to install to be where I was before the failure. It takes a couple of days tough. My linux list is a little more complicated. Because its not only install the new application but then check that all the drivers are working, configure it, fix the broken parts, maybe reconfigure and recomplie the kernel. And then if your system crashes and you have to reinstall, the packages might have changed and the list is useless. Somebody would say that is a rapid development enviroment but why do i need to read the 123,322 man pages every time that i need to reinstall? I am to the point that i just want the applications to work so i am runnning more windows than linux than i used to. I really would like to run more linux but expending the whole weekend just to make the computer to be able to run opengl or correct sound does not strike me as fun any more.

The funny part is going to happen in a couple of million years in the future where humans would evolve into something different from what they are today. Then lets see what Kansas has to say.

The not so funny part is that humans are not challenged by the natural enviroment anymore so there is no more forward evolution. We will probably turn weaker, more likely to get sick (due to advances in medicine; it sounds contradicting but when medicine fixes the human body, then there is no pressure for it to evolve. And then the 'fixed' people can go out and have more kids with the same desease) and more dumb. There is no natural pressure in humans to become more inteligent.
