If that would result in more people knowing about Linux MS could actually be doing us a favour. If some of the persons had to try using Linux just to prove they were not bluffing, it could be even better. Some of the people just wanting MS software for free might end up liking Linux.

Has the "IP level of the Internet" stabilized enough

No. Since we are at the moment in the transition phase between version 4 and 6 it should not be considered stabilized yet. Some time in the future when IPv6 is being used on most of the Internet, and has been stable for some time it will be time to ask that question again.

    What Y2K fiasco?

I experienced one fiasco, my brother has a computer from 1995. The BIOS developers was "smart" they have been thinking: "Nobody is going to need any year before 94 in this RTC, so let's check for that and change the year to 94 to avoid some problems."

Guess what the clock displayed the first time it was switched on in the year 2000.

i know linus uses one but it's not cvs it's one of the commerical ones i heard.

The term commercial might depend on your definition of the word. The tool in question is BitKeeper. BitKeeper is not free software, but you don't have to pay for using it in Linux development. The use of BitKeeper by a number of kernel hackers does not affect the license of Linux itself.

On the kernel mailing list a few people has been flamed for requesting that kernel documentation does not mention BitKeeper.

2.6.0 should be a STABLE realease right?

Yes, you are right, 2.6.0 should be a stable release. And hopefully it will at least be a stable release for all the people that developed and tested 2.5.x. But it is practically impossible to make a piece of software without bugs, so when 2.6.0 is released there will still be bugs to fix. When the version number changes from 2.5.x to 2.6.0 more people will start using it and consequently remaining bugs will be found faster.

Of course I hope 2.6.0 will not be released with known bugs, and will be intensively tested before release. But that is the best we can hope for.

But maybe it's time for a serious attempt at an alternate DNS system.

That would actually be possible. Anybody with the servers it takes could install bind and set up a new group of root dns servers. Some toplevel domains could be delegated to the usual servers while others could be taken over because the policies were disliked. Obviously anybody doing this would want to get something in return for the effort, but hey who wouldn't like a toplevel domain of their own. The next step would get to use somebody to use this. You could give your friends a named.ca file and a domain and see what happens.
