  2. Landlines and cellphones on Microsoft to Launch "Skype Killer" · · Score: 5, Informative
"Skype is currently the only provider to allow calls to landlines and cellphones."

Thats not entirely accurate. British Telecom have an add-on to Yahoo messenger that allows calls to landlines and cellphones.

  3. Food File Online on A Piece of CherryPy for CGI Programmers · · Score: 1
CherryPy does make web applications a breeze.

I used CherryPy to turn the public domain US Department of Agriculture's nutrient database in to a profitable website, Food File Online. The single script used to power it represents just under one weeks work!

  4. BT? Dont talk to me about BT! on The Horror Of British Telecom · · Score: 4, Informative

I was an early adopter of ADSL, which I purchased directly from BT. When they first set me up it all went smoothly - although it did take 2 weeks for an engineer visit.

Then I had to move. Unfortunately I still had a few months to go on my one year contract. But when I called BT to set up ADSL in my new flat, they were happy to waive the remaining months I owed them. Very nice of them I thought, yet when I tried to order the new ADSL installation they told me I couldn't pay for it with my credit card because only one installation was allowed per credit card. They wouldn't let me pay by any other method (not cheque, cash nor gold doubloons). I only had the one credit card at the time, so I offered to pay up the remaining months on the old installation to free up my credit card. But they wouldn't let me do that either. Several weeks of calling and being called back went by with no progress and I was eventualy given email addresses to complain to, which were just ignored.

I eventualy just went with another ISP, who were more expensive but helpful. So I am no fan of BT. And dont get me started on the time they routed my phone calls to another (unattended) number, then spent two weeks calling me to arrange an engineers visit!

The label for Dunfermline obscures the label for Edinburgh on the zoomed out view. It is actualy there if you zoom in a bit..

  7. Allergies? on Sleeping Problems? · · Score: 1

I've also had a sleep problem for years. For me the cause it pretty well defined, but there seems almost nothing that can be done about it. I suffer from house dust mite allergy, which causes me to have a stuffy nose, particularily at night. While I'm awake I breath through my mouth and it is no big deal. When I do fall asleep though, I naturaly begin to breath through my nose. Often I wake up, feeling like I am suffocating. Even when I dont wake up fully Im sure it prevents me from getting enough deep sleep - since I always feel crappy in the morning, often with a headache.

Its interesting the OP said the problem got worse in the summer. Perhaps he has a touch of hayfever. But even house dust mite get a little worse in the summer, due to the increase in humidity.

If any readers have any tips for getting rid of house dust mite, post them! According to google I have to rip up the carpets, wrap my bed in plastic, buy a de-humidifier and pour liquid nitrogen on the furniture.

  10. Programmer art on POV-Ray 3.6 Released · · Score: 3, Interesting

I've been using Povray for years. Initialy because it was the only ray-tracer available to me, but later on because I could create high quality images and animations programmaticaly by producing scene files from aplications.

I like it because I can pretend for a moment that Im an artist, and not a geek. Even though I'm editing what looks like a programming language to the casual observer.

Currently I'm using it to produce animated alpha channel sprites for a game, and having a ball.

  11. Playing by their rules on Google Blocks 'Optimized' Pages · · Score: 1

I have fallen foul of Googles new 'optimisation'. My site was for a time ranked pretty highly for the keywords 'chess game'. For months I was never out of the top 30 places, even spending a few weeks basking in the glory of being on the first page.

I did this by following the advice from various websites, and scattering the keywords through the front page and getting various web sites to me.

It didn't take long to get a good ranking since I submitted my software to over 300 software sites, the description contained the keywords and software sites naturally give a link to the publisher. I don't think I was cheating, my site was always relevant - the keywords were, chess game, not artificially, chess game, used :P

Do Google have to keep changing their search rules? I mean, does it really improve things, or do they just have to shake things up when webmasters think they have figured out how the ranking works? I feel I have been penalised for playing by the rules. Perhaps the only way to win the game, is not to play.

  12. Re:hemorrhage on Redheads Need More Anesthesia than Others · · Score: 1
Interesting. A nurse once warned me that red-heads 'bleed more'. She also recommended homeopathy - go figure.

I suspect it is just the psychological association with blood and red hair. Come to think of it that is probably why people think we are more aggressive. Red equals danger. Flee!

Give it a few thousand years and we shall evolve red and black stripes in our hair and fake eyes on our asses.
