I'm special ed and being able to take notes on my laptop helps me a ton. If I had to write them on paper I wouldn't be able to read them very well + I don't have spell check with pen and paper.
However, I have seen kids using cellphones and laptops to do other things in class. Does it hurt? No - because these are the same kids that would be talking out-loud or passing notes in class. The problem isn't the technology it's the kids. If they don't want to learn or it's too easy (they understand so therefore don't feel the need to take notes) they are not going to listen regardless if there is technology or not.
The bottom line is there will always be distractions and the goal should be to let kids know that yeah you can do this or that but if you don't pay attention you are not going to learn. If you don't learn you will end up working some job you don't like with no dreams. Rather than you find what is interesting, work at it, get a job doing what you find interesting and have a great life:-)
Yes Apple did say that the server would have jabber support so windows and linux users could connect.
Apple never announced that ichat would have jabber support. Will Apple use their video and audio on jabber? What will this mean for the jabber community.
There are no good Mac OS X jabber clients so this a really good thing for Mac users.:-)
Yes another bad idea from Microsoft.
When is Microsoft going to issue a public apology for Windows ME?
All jokes aside, it looks like Microsoft is trying to counter Google's blogger.com
It's almost exactly like Jabber except I guess a little better. It's just a bunch of transports that sit on a server.
It appears apple is going to do that with ichat. You can connect to a copy of Mac OS X server using the ichat protocol and it can handle ichat and jabber.
This is exactly what they are doing except with more popular protocols.
In general this isn't anything too new, and it's not decentralizing instant message. You still have 3 big companies in charge which I think is very bad and dangerous.
What happens when someone else besides the school is able to access them? I can view my whole school district's security cams and people think that is a privacy issue.
What is going to happen when someone is able to track these kids and it isn't the school?
I don't think so. That year will be when the average person decides that they want to run an open source operating system. Right now it's just geeks who really use linux.
Keep in mind these tests were done on the G5's. Tiger is the only version of Mac OS X to have 64bit support. One has to wonder if it is really faster on non-64 bit operating systems.
It sounds like a great plan. Think of this, you could register once and never have to register again for news paper sites.
Problems:
1. PRIVACY - Do you want one place to have all this info.
2. You rely on one place for all this info. What if it is linked on slashdot or fark hehe.
3. Money - How would this one central site make money?
4. Technology - How would they integrate this with several different systems?

What about war games? :P

I'm tired of trolls and kiddies who think that saying FP is cool.

I wouldn't say BSD is dying. Look at Apple. Darwin is based on FreeBSD and you can't say that xserves are not selling.
