I once finally got a Linux distro up and running after literally days of struggling with hardware recognition. Opened a console and did a "apt-get upgrade" command, rebooted, total system meltdown. Reinstalled Windows because I had enough of Linux by then, and asked on a forum why that happened. The answer was that I should have used the accompanying GUI instead... Uhmmm... so why was I allowed to do that command in the first place? Why did it thrash the system? What kind of lame excuse is that to begin with?
I could ask you how you even manage to get a Linux distro up and running and maintaining it. Linux feels like a house of cards that can collapse just by looking at it the wrong way. Do you get your hardware in some magic Chinese webshop? Asking because I've tried giving many, many distros a try, and they all fail at recognizing some piece of hardware... and the all fail to find different pieces of hardware on different distros. I've long since given up on even trying out Linux anymore despite giving it several tries over the span of a decade.
Very good point that initially made me laugh, but the more I thought about it, the more plausible it seems. In the case of a sudden pile-up, an oncoming AI car could decide to swerve an oncoming car off the highway because the AI has decided that has a better probability of saving people. Another example could be a child that runs into traffic. Should the car continue or run into the sidewalk where there are people, or into a wall? So many philosophical decisions. I know it has been covered years ago, but I'm not a philosopher so I don't know the correct answers, if there are any.
I watched a news report where they tested out driver-less cars in Germany. All went well until they came upon some road construction. The sensors didn't seem to register the cones and signs that were set up, and the car wanted to drive through it into a hole that the construction crew had dug. The person observing the car had to interfere. Errors like these is a sure sign that autonomous cars are far away in the distant future.
"a bunch of extra packages and a ppa or two"
There lies the problem. Which packages exactly? What's a ppa? Why would I use any forms of console or commands in an install anyway if I were a regular user? I tried for a decade to switch to Linux but found myself back on Windows in a matter of hours because everything was 100 times harder, the GUI was a horrible mess of pretty UI and stupid console windows that had to be open practically all the time to get things done, none of my programs existed or just worked out of the box, and the list goes on and on. I once installed Ubuntu on a laptop that could barely run Windows XP for a colleagues son. It ran fine but a few days later my colleague returned blushed/embarrassed that her son couldn't figure it out. I knew that would happen so I helped finding a new Windows laptop where her son could use all the programs he knew and everything just works. Linux will never ever become mainstream. Haven't even gotten into the toxic Linux community.
The 2013 number on that website is 122.46, and 2014 it's 123.23. I guess that the "ConsumerView_10_2013" name refers to October, so with 123 million rows I think it's safe to say that it includes ALL households.
I love reading delusional Linux fanatic comments that still believes anybody gives a single fuck about anything Linux ever. Now you expect people to install some Linux crap that probably crashes 5 times during installation instead of using Windows. Go compile yourself:D
Whenever I read a release note to a new Linux distro version I roll my eyes. Now includes the new Schinkelfluff 0.8.2009.7 instead of FluffyMcNutsack 8437687.2, and so on and so on. I've never heard of those programs before, I don't care, nobody cares, just like nobody cares about Linux. It's dead on desktop and will never succeed. 3% market-share after being given away for free for 20 years? Come on!
Sound like Linux is the one constantly trying to catch up. Why would anybody drop a perfectly working system that is rock solid and requires next to none attention, choose Linux, a rainbow of different GUI styles, consoles, consoles everywhere!, PnP that always cant configure that one device so users have to wade through tons of crappy drivers, more consoles, text-editing config files with the right permissions, and the list goes on and on. Describing Linux would take two rolls of closely written toilet-paper to even begin describing how bad it is. I tried running Linux subsystem in Windows 10 to have something to toy with but uninstalled it because after 6 months I had no idea whatsoever why I should use it for anything ever.
Or maybe they are trying to get your 22 year old methods to world in the real work. It's funny that you think everybody is so stupid and you're soooo smart because you're the only one still using *nix. Glad I'm not your colleague because your head must stink after being up your own ass.
The most right-wing party in Denmark (in government, not Nazis and that far-right BS) almost verges the American Democrats party. A guy like Bernie Sanders would be center/slightly right-wing in Denmark.
I was responding to the usual Linux program suggestion that is typical Slashdot. I'm not going to waste a PC to run Linux because Linux is like only having one arm. You can do virtually anything like a person with two arms but it takes longer and requires more effort, and accidents are more likely to happen. I'm not just talking out of my ass because I actually tried for 10 years to convert to Linux but holy shit, it sucks soooo baaaad!
Awwww... typical Linux dork opinion as usual:) I also use Chrome that sends info to Google but I'm still not getting any ads:) I know you Linux dweebs really, really want Microsoft and Gmail to fail so you guys can justify whatever crappy FOSS app you use.
I'm not getting any ads from running Windows, and whatever "super duper" private information you think Microsoft is collection they can have because I'm still not seeing ads. This is Slashdot so 99.99999% are Linux dorks that think it's "oh so good". I've tried to convert to Linux since Slackware but found again and again that it's a piece of crap. It can't do the things I want, it's way more complicated than I'd like it to be, GUI's looks like something a retarded kid drew in kindergarten, and one tiny mistake and it falls down faster than a house of cards. Linux sucks and will never be mainstream.
Interesting. Never heard about Pi-Hole before. Regarding cookies and all that "invisible" junk; I'm certain that I'm being tracked, and have cookies, and they can have it and study it until the Sun burns out, but good luck sending me ads:D Again if an ad slips by I'll put it out of it's misery in a fraction of a second and have updated block rules ready.
Why is this Al Beats so violent going to Reading Comprehension conventions?

Imagine weapons like guns where everybody could just get one and use it... Oh, wait... that's American gun policy.

Everybody knows the internet is made up of tubes and highways.
Killing Net Neutrality certainly will disable people.
Good one :D

You only have four broken devices? Linux PnP sure has come a long way in 20 years :D
Nah... because people will actually use this interface instead of crappy Linux :D

Good thing there's so many salty Linux fanatic tears in here :)

Since you're a professional game developer, what kind of crap games do you develop? Like you said; "Modern games are full of bullshit".
