  1. EQ vs Math on Swedish Student Partly Solves 16th Hilbert Problem · · Score: 3, Funny

It's sad, but I was more excited to see EverQuest Players Defeat 'Unkillable' Monster than the solving of a math problem. Makes ya wonder who's more geekier.

  2. Merry Xmas on Secure Programming Cookbook for C and C++ · · Score: 1

And it's the perfect holiday gift for that special Microsoft Programmer you know and love!

  3. Deja Vu? on Buy.Com Debuts Music Download Site · · Score: 1

Does the layout of buymusic.com look familiar to anyone else, or is it just me?

  4. iTunes Music Store on CD Price-Fixing Suit Ruling · · Score: 2, Insightful

Hey, that's 13 songs I can download from the iTunes Music Store!!

  5. The Parents on Video Games Share Blame in Florida Murder Case · · Score: 1

I always like how when this "sort of thing" happens, the parents are never to blame.

My folks raised me well. They taught me the difference between right, and wrong. When I see someone walking down the sidewalk, I don't try to run them down as I do in Vice City, because I know better.

I don't think video games have any influence on kids. I think it's the parents. I've been playing video games since I was four. I'm not a violent person. Sure, I can think violent thoughts, but I don't act on violent thoughts. There's a difference, and I credit my parents with showing me that difference. Now, we have no idea if the parents of this kid read him bedtime stories or coached his little league team, but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say they probably didn't. I doubt he grew up in a loving, caring home. I could be wrong, but I think it's a good guess based one what the article says: "Mickey Mishne said his daughter (the Fragged) had invited Lynch (the Fragger) to stay at their home because she felt sorry for him." She felt sorry for him, why? There's no reason given in the article, but one must wonder. That's a DateLine Special with Stone Phillips that I'd watch.

But even if you don't agree with the Bad-Parent Defense, what about the He's-Fucking-16-Years-Old-and-Should-Know-Better-T han-to-Frag-the-Neighbor-Girl Defense?

What's that bumper sticker say? Guns Don't Kill People, People Kill People. Hey CopyLeft, here's one for ya: Video Games Don't Crush People's Neighbor's Skulls In, People Do. There ya go, and I give up any and all rights to that quote. Please just send me a free sticker.

  6. Too busy to learn on Why is Everyone Still Stuck in QWERTY? · · Score: 1
If there were 89 hours during the course of a day, I'd take the time to learn. But as of now, I can type in the dark with a QWERTY keyboard, and that's just good enough for me.

    Well, theres my two pennies.

  7. Kids don't have Credit Cards!! on Amazon Calls Children's Privacy Complaint Groundless · · Score: 2, Insightful

So what was the deal with those Amazon Press Releases for the Harry Potter Magical Candy Contest For Children Ages 6 to 13...

The site is not targeted at children, simply because children do not have credit cards!! These press releases are targeted at the adults to purchase these neat toys for their kids. Duh!

What is it with /.ers hating Amazon? I shop Amazon on a daily basis, and think of them as the greatest web page ever created. Whatever you've got against them, get over it. It's getting kind of old.

  8. another dupe? on Microsoft Bug May Attract Big Worm · · Score: 5, Funny

Wasn't this story posted last month... And the month before? And the week before that? And the month before...

  9. Nomad Jukebox on Your Most Damage-Resistant Hardware? · · Score: 1

A few months after I bought my (original) 6 GB Nomad Jukebox, I dropped it on the ground. I was on my way to work, and I had thought I'd slipped it into the inside pocket of my jacket. Then I let go of it, and it dropped a good 3 or 4 feet (turns it I had missed the opening of my jacket). The battery slot opened on impact, and the four AA batteries fell out and rolled all over the place. I gathered them up, put them back in, closed the compartment, and the damn thing worked. Still works to this day, and I use it on a daily basis.

  10. Other ISPs? on FCC Abandons Linesharing, Kills DSL Competition · · Score: 1

What does this mean for ISPs like Earthlink, and other smaller "mom and pop" ISPs? Does this take them out of the running for offering DSL service?

  11. re-map-able keyboards on Keyboard Layouts for the 21st Century? · · Score: 1
i think i use most of the keys on my powerbook. i wish i had a real keypad, as i use the ones on my full keyboards very often (useful for entering cc numbers at amazon, thinkgeek, cdw, ect). but really, a re-map-able keyboard would be nice. the more i think about it, the harder it would be to use and re-learn, especially if all my other keyboards weren't re-map-able.

(i still can't figure out what the double-s key is...)

  12. Did they check their pockets? on NASA Loses Contact With Comet Explorer · · Score: 1
I know how they must be feeling. I lost my car keys the other day. That was embarrassing.
