Basically, you are saying that you gamed, were violent as a youth and even as an adult got into a fight because of your religious intolerance.
If this was a court, your lawyer would have shot you by now to shut you up. Stop making the other sides case.
On the whole, if you want to proof violent games do not make violent people, do not show a person who gamed and is violent. "yes you honor, I want to proof that cats are NOT predators and to demonstrate I want to present this hungry lion and taste juicy sheep to the stand."
In fact, the aggressive reaction to this kind of story in general, kinda proofs the point. What is needed is a gentle polite response, backed-up with data. Not "you lie, I am going to kill you".
When pop-music was under attack, you didn't sent metal rockers to discuss things, you send the beatles. Clean kids who know to dress in a suit when needed who can finish a sentence without getting high to show that just because you don't get the music, doesn't mean all young people who listen to it are scary drug-crazed commies.
When you want to proof you are not a crazed killer because of gaming, wipe the foam from your mouth and clean up the blood splatters before making your case.
So what you are saying that your study is a fact and that another study is a lie. How does this work? Because you like the conclusion of the one and not the other?
Violent crime studies are as controversial as computer game studies and have the same bias by people wanting to make their point.
Why do you blindly accept one study and denounce the other? Because you got an agenda?
You are claiming that this study based on stats is bogus, and show another bunch of stats... If one set of stats can be manipulated, then why can't yours?
There are also stats that show juvenile crime is up. Including women now becoming far more violent then ever before. You can descredit those of course as well, but only if you discredit your own at the same time.
Either all stats are suspect or none are, you can have it both ways.
Because funding an open source project where I can take the code and remove any and all reference to google with a simple grep is the same thing as buying companies to make their closed source products work only with your service.
Google sends t-shirts to an orphanage that just happen to have google on the size tag that easily comes off. MS bribes the orphanage to dress the kids in MS gear and anyone who dares to resist is kicked out.
Good vs Evil, the difference ain't all that subtle really.
This ain't hard and MS has got (or should have with the salaries they are paying) plenty of smart people. And yet they continue to screw things up time and after time. And this is not a compatibility issue were MS has to ensure its software runs on a billion different configurations with users disabling critical stuff because they think they know better. This is just a random selection, a text-book case and they get it wrong...
And those who claim about MS not wanting to spend countless resources on this. Sorry, but any decent dev would have knocked this out in a day. Give a week of testing and we are still talking peanuts in development cost for MS. That they still didn't get it right. Well that says a lot about MS. It always seems to be a race towards the bottom for them. With every product, everything they do, you got to wonder, what did they screw up this time.
IE5 mobile browser without CSS. X-box that is underpowered. New music store for the zune so that existing stores and music don't work. New x-box with a failure rate that you couldn't get if you dropped half the boxes during transport.
And if they can't even get the right random algorithm, how can we be sure they get anything else in their code right? Would you buy a car if the car radio fell out whenever you turned it on? No, because it says something about quality. If the things you can see, don't work, then what about the things you can't see?
So a billion dollar company is safing a few pennies by not using a proper routine, that they probably got developed and ready to use in any case and instead produces out of several approaches the one that is bad.
And that doesn't tell you anything.
Well, that tells me something about you. Can you guess what it is?
You do NOT find out what it is like to be blind by closing your eyes. You do NOT find out what it is like to be homeless by sleeping for one night on the street. You do NOT find out what it is like to be disabled if you once sat in wheel chair with a broken leg.
All these things are temporary experiences that you can end or know they will end. The real thing NEVER ends.
It is one of the reasons that poverty is so poorly represented in the media. Nobody in media is poor. Even if they were poor before, you quickly forget about that. And temporary poverty as say a student doesn't even begin to count. Poverty is NOT having to use a washing machine that has fallen apart, it is the washing machine having fallen apart and no option to replace it (and laundromats are EXPENSIVE and cost more time). It is a race to the bottom where you can easily end up in a situation that every advance you make becomes a step backward. Get a job, can mean 100 increase in income but 200 increase in expenses because of the need of clean, clothes and transportation.
Now it is true that in slums some people rise above it all. But it seems a waste full process. Millions of people living in slums to produce a handful that rise out of it? Oh yeah, that is using resources efficiently. And in rich areas, how many people rise above it? Would suck if it is the same or even a higher percentage wouldn't it? Quick, how many doctors does a slum produce versus a decent area?
No, there is nobility in the poor. That is just what the rich want to believe so they can feel better about hoarding all the resources.
"In general," Apple said in the report, "annual audits of final assembly manufacturers show continued performance improvements and better working conditions."
Or translated into English, "it used to be we didn't care, but now we have announced once a year inspections, we find that each time they get better at hiding violations from us".
I wonder what the Toyota scandal will do with all of this however. They are paying the price for random outsourcing to safe some bucks and it is costing them a fortune and decades of good will as the most reliable cheap car maker are shot to hell. (And yes I am aware that the problems occurred in the US, but that is a low wage country compared to Japan.)
When you outsource everything, what is left of your company? And once you put in place all those checks to make sure people half way across the world are working as you want them, how much have you actually saved?
I always find it funny that people who risk jail time for a drug claim they haven't got a problem. "No sirree, I am not a drunk. Yes I am drinking industrial alcohol laced with rat poison for flavor sold to me by outragous prices and I could go to jail for it, but really, I got it all under control."
It is like watching a pot addict claim that pot is not addictive but boy, do not get between him and his fix. Here is a hint, if you been to jail 2 times and risk getting life if you get caught again and you still smoke for a short high regardless. YOU ARE AN ADDICT!
No, you are not fighting the system. You are not a rebel with a cause. Rebels do something worthwhile. Anon publishing documents people don't want the world to see is worthwhile stuff. Getting high is not. Hell, most drug abusers are very much in favor of control, as long as it suits them. The proof? How many alcohol addicts want a ban on pot? How many pot smokers agree that drink driving is bad but driving while high is okay?
But I got it easy I suppose. I do not have an addictive personality. No, that is not as much a blessing as you might think because it makes it hard to fit in with the rest of the world. I really can't see why you would want to drink industrial alcohol. To me, as I said, the very fact that you want to drink what is a poison, suggests that you got a problem and apparently society at times thinks it needs to protect people against themselves. Frankly, if you see what current drugs are doing in some areas, I can see the logic. You can't tell me the ghettos of this world wouldn't be better if there was no drug trade. Legalize it all? Sure, you could argue that with me, if your eyes weren't the size of saucers and you weren't twitching because you haven't had your fix yet.
But really, is this story so shocking to people? Don't you have "spiritus" in the US? A cleaning alcohol laced with poison to stop people from drinking it?
For those who want to discuss freedom in a democracy. Grow up. Democracy is the dictatorship of the majority voting group. There is no freedom when you got more then 1 person. Never can be. All you can do is make a large portion of the people not run into to many restrictions during their life. I am free? Fine, so I can piss on your carpet can I? Thought so.
It is about the change in temperature, and shifting weather pattens. Not about how hot it is.
You can spot a denialist by how they focus on the current outside temp. like a smoker with cancer, one lung, no lyrnax, claiming that smoking hasn't killed him yet.
Remember the ep where Fry met a stockbroker or something from his own time, and they had a shareholder meeting? Well, they really are like that. In fact, they are worse, but nobody would believe a comedy show that showed real stockholders.
Remember for how long the tobacco industry denied that their was a health risk to smoking? Oh they were so happy to point out all the old people who smoked and still had gotten old, surely that proved how wrong all the scientist were and that there scientist who got their paycheck from them were right.
Or car safety. No sir, seatbelts kill people.
Look at Mythbusters, just how many stupid myths people want them to investigate over and over because they just want to believe some silly idea. Using a net in your pickup truck to safe fuel... IF that is going work, it only works in an empty truck AND one that doesn't need the door... so why have you got a pickup truck then? You drive a three ton vehicle with huge wasted space and worry about saving a few nickels.
One simple example of how denialists think, is that they have leaped on "global warming" rather then "global climate change". It is easier, anytime it snows you can shout "see, the world ain't getting warmer". Climate change is harder to debunk because ordinary farmers can tell you about it. Just a few more days of rain, or less can ruin a crop. And our western society isn't based on our universities, it is based on our farms. Farms that put plenty of food in our bellies, so much that very clever people can think very clever ideas and still think milk comes from a carton. The more intelligent a creature the less time it spends hunting for food == the less time hunting for food, the more intelligent you can become.
But what if the climate does happen to change? It could radically shift were what types of food can be grown. You might think grain is just about putting a seed in the ground and coming back half a year later to mow it, but it is a delicate process. A frost at the wrong time, not enough rain at some point, to much at another, can ruin the crop.
Right now, in the west we are incredible luck. A man can feed himself well for an entire day with about ONE hour of work, even on low pay. Say that prices double, what effect would that have on our society? Less money to spend on education, less money on healthcare. Less money to spend on taxes to fund the country as a whole.
People can understand that if the planet had just a slightly different orbit it would be a desolate place like mars or venus. But they don't understand that those two weeks of warm dry weather in fall are more then just a nice end to the summer, they are the time farmers need to make hay. No hay, no cheap cattle food for the winter, means that other places must grow the food that costs more and can't grow human food.
But hey, as long as you can drive your 3 ton pickup truck that never picks anything up, you can deny all you want. Just like a smoker with only 1 lung left and no larynx denies that there is anything wrong with smoking.
And really, the entire problem is just as with smoking, by the time we got the absolute evidence (you died from a tar lung) it really is to late.
They WILL, they got no choice, no more choice then my cat has of pouncing when I dangle a string in front of its nose, or I have of rubbing her belly when she goes all cuddly on my lap. We are simple creatures, and hackers are no different. Give them a challenge and they WILL pounce.
Has ANY of these DRM architects ever wondered HOW the DRM hackers get the game to hack? Oh, some get it from friends who work at game shops and such, but plenty BUY it. Do you REALLY think the people that crack Windows DRM don't have a legit version themselves? They do. They don't hack for profit or even to save money but because it gives them a thrill.
Frankly, I think this game can be broken in a very simple way on release, just create a fake server that says "OK" and simply do without in game saves but use machine states to do it. Sooner or later someone WILL sort this out, after all, the save code is in the game, it must be at one point or another to send the save file over to the server.
And there are dozens if not thousands of hackers who smell a challenge.
We have seen restrictive DRM before and the more the game company announced how unbreakable their DRM is, the more quickly it has been broken.
This bit of DRM will fail because unlike say the PS3, it has to run on a open platform where the user is ultimately in control of the entire system. Every bit that goes in and out can be analyzed and altered at the will of the user. And at the same time all three parts of the encryption puzzle must be available for the game to work.
I would be suprised if a working hack isn't out at launch and a complete hack within a month.
Meanwhile, everyone who buys the game has to endure this DRM.
People of the game industry, "cutting of your nose to spite your face" is NOT a motto.
Typically the only reason my linux machines get rebooted is precisely because the hardware HAS changed. Or the kernel has. What other reason can there be to reboot?
And as for your assertion that linux wouldn't be any better, I get a cheap netbook with a joke SSD and it boots faster. (Aspire One ZG5)
Windows boot time is not entirely fair however, it tries to do a lot of things. People think that all a computer does is draw a desktop, but to get all that in order a lot of hardware has to be configured and this includes dealing with delays. For instance spinning up the HD's and allow them time to report. There is often even a bios setting to allow extra delay's so slower hardware has time to respond.
Well, if you look at the graph on the front page it becomes bloody obvious. The real data goes up and down, but does so over longer periods, it jitters but there is a direction to its movement overall. While the fake one goes up and down far to randomly, it simply does not look like a stock market result.
So yes, within this simple example, I could tell just because I know from years of news exposure what a financial graph tends to look like.
But to be honest, I am not sure it means anything. They could just have made the random sample to random. The real turing test is about actually putting some effort in the fake system to make people believe it is real. By this test your would have a turing test program that just reads random words from a dictionary and then ask people if they can spot the difference.
As long as websites continue to be build for the lowest amount possible, security is going to take a backseat. I have seen more then my fair share of chinese/indian/east european hack jobs where they use code straight from "Hello world" examples. Web development has always been about "deploy now, fix later", but with the coming of outsourcing this already cut throath industry has lost all sense of quality.
Really, even the most basic security measures are not there, code deployed for thousands of dollars that is a complete mess with old versions littered around, root mysql with no password open to the world, anyting to deploy quickly to satisfy a customer whose only measure of quality is the price.
There is good money to be made in fixing these messes (because by now the site has been earning money and the fixes have to be made to ensure the revenue stream) but god it is soul destroying.
You call it a big iPod Touch. Fine, but have you considered that this device has the small screen for a reason? Because these type of devices have to fit in your pocket?
This ain't rocket science. It is NOT just a big iPod touch, that would be like saying the portable LP player you once had was a walkman. No. A walkman fitted in your pocket, an LP player no matter how small does not for a very obvious reason.
And so, the two devices, simply because of their size difference are completely different.
It will be intresting to see what is going to happen to. A lot of people use their netbooks als portable media players to hook up to tv's for some reason. They might be well served by the iPad. But people who use a netbook as a small highly portable computer, will not.
Make no mistake, those who complain about slow netbooks got the crappy models with HD's. Stick a proper SSD in one, get a dual core and it is a fairly powerfull machine easily capable of holding up to early dual cores in user experience. For me it is a PC without the size constraints, because frankly my real desktops are running at 1% even when I am using. So what if my netbook then does 10% (at half clock speed)... yeah it is slower, but who cares?
You end up saying you snag out the iPod more often... exactly. But the iPad would be in the same place as your laptop.
If you break your leg tomorrow. Were is your money coming from? Right, your boss. Sick leave. Burglers haven't got it.
Neither can you boss turn out to be carrying a gun and blow your brains out rather then pay you.
If you botch up your work, you won't land in a small cell with a guy named Bubba who likes you very very much.
You ex-gf can't turn you into your boss, even if you really screwed up.
A live of crime sound easy, but it isn't. If it was, more people would do it.
Take the pirates of somalia, sounds like easy money, but how many regular sailors can have their brains blown out by a sniper and nobody gives a damn? And if you think it sucks that your wife wants your wages, wait till you have to deal with the crime hierarchy. They are like the IRS, but not as nice. Oh, and then there is the IRS who can hook you up with Bubba again if you can't account for every penny in your pocket.

They might or might not have good advice, but clearly standards are not one of them.
Frankly after taking a look it seems to be one of countless sites that gather all sorts of topics that have something to do with web-development. If this one is supposed to be extra-special, then I am not seeing it.
Nah, some searches are better, although tech searches remain the domain of google with Bing typically given completely useless results.
But I have found a use for its image search... although only in the few cases I can't find a good image in the first few pages of google.
And of course, google with this move has just gotten itself a hell of a lot of goodwill from every web developer. No more IE6. Finally.
But I don't think they go far enough, they should just put 1 movie on youtube for IE6 users. 2 girls and a cup. If you use shit for a browser, then you got to love that movie.

This is the "touch it" in the shop experience. Wait till you close the deal. Warranty to the church doors.
Validate their home page. This one has 33 errors.
They might or might not have good advice, but clearly standards are not one of them.
Frankly after taking a look it seems to be one of countless sites that gather all sorts of topics that have something to do with web-development. If this one is supposed to be extra-special, then I am not seeing it.
I am getting confused here. I thought pirates shuttled old men and their boy toys to Alderaan? But now you are saying we are like Che Guevara?
Either way, our chances of getting laid any time soon just sky-rocketed. We are now officially "bad boys". Rebel with a compile.
To proof how superior google is.
