  1. How I used my netbook on Acer Rethinks the "Tablet Bubble," Launching $99 Tablet · · Score: 2

There can be a need for portable computing in your life. This is NOT the same as on the move computing but rather where you wish to have the same enviroment at several static locations. The trick is here to remember that no sane person works on a laptop. Your screen got to be higher up to be comfortable and your keyboard lower, flatter and bigger. So... you instead plug it into your laptop stand, link it via say Synergy and use it as an extra screen with your own environment.

For others, a netbook is a very storable PC. A lot of people don't really want a computer taking up space constantly when they only use it for a short time. A netbook is easily taken out, read mail, browse then stored away again out of the way.

These aren't high tech needs, they could be done with anything but a netbook is just the right balance between being somewhat useful as a full PC and not taking up as much space/weighing/costing.

Oh and I am going to let you in on a little secret. Most of the population DOES use computers to create content. This message is content and is far faster to type on a normal keyboard then a touchscreen. Cat videos are content, facebook pages are content, diary entries are content.

Another little secret, when I want to passively consume content, the TV is far far far easier then any tablet. And I don't need to hold it in my hand the entire time.

Good advice for general people is to watch more then Fox, lest their brains rot away. In the same vein, read something else but Slashdot. If you think the Pi is a mainstream device you got three options:

    • Your insane.
    • You are unfamiliar with the meaning of the word "mainstream"
    • Your reality consists of your mothers basement and a guy you met on IRC and thought was a girl.

In extreme cases, all three might apply.

The Raspberry Pi is hard to get hold of, even harder to use and comes with barely enough resources to run even the most basic OS. But SOMEHOW this device will magically make it into the homes of the average person who can't afford a cheap desktop BUT does have a HDMI capable TV with a spare port to hook it up to...

The INSANITY of all this is astounding, it shows tupe666 has lost all touch with reality, he lives in a fantasy world were a device that takes anywhere from several weeks to several months to be delivered, can only be ordered online and requires advanced linux skill to even be outfitted with a serviceable user friendly OS is installed in millions of homes world-wide. And that this extremely underpowered device is the same as a "hi-priced" PC, god even knows what that might be. If you think a Raspberry Pi is as functional as even a cheap PC, you just don't have a clue. I love Linux as much as the next guy but WIndows IS the mainstream OS and the Raspberry Pi can't run that so it loses out right there.

There is room in the world for PC alternatives but the simple fact remains that the PC setup, large keyboard, monitor at eye height, flat large desk, office chair, mouse is the most comfortable way to CREATE content. For consuming content, the TV is most comfortable. A tablet is a high awkward device for either. When sitting at a desk creating content it is a usability nightmare, the only people who think it is good are those who work on laptops and 20 years from now will complain about their backs non-stop.

If you really want to see what mainstream is, go to youtube and see what people use who put up cat videos. A 5 year old dell they got from someone cheap and a CRT monitor that they can't see any point in replacing with a 100 dollar LCD screen. That is what is mainstream NOT a geek gadget.

Tablets like the iPad sell millions it is true but that is a planet with 7 billion people and many a iPad 3 is owned by a person with an iPad2 etc lying in the closet. You can easily see this with google statistics, what percentage visits a site with iOS? A small amount and it gets smaller the more mainstream a site is. And web browsing is ONE thing tablets are actually good at.

But hey, I am willing to eat my words. tuppe666 only has to publish his address so someone can go and take his PC and give him a Raspberry Pi, 5 dollar keyboard and a TV and THAT IS IT! Wanna bet he won't take that deal? Wanna bet NOBODY on Slashdot will?

The FREE option is listed FIRST, you ONLY need to pay if you want someone to manually check your SPAM sending IP can be cleared. Spammers LIE, they will abuse ANY complaint system and this costs time and energy.

Spammers rely on the low costs of their operation to remain profitable, they spend nothing and instead leech from others people infrastructure, efforts and time to make their money. The easiest way to combat this is to cost the Spammers time, energy and money. That hurts their profits the most and is the only way to hinder them.

Yes it sucks to hell and back if you are caught in between with your "legit" reasons to run a mass emailer from your own computer. But the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one. Don't like it? You PAY ME then to deal with spam. You don't want to pay? Well... then what do you want? Email was ruined by the spammers, the old idea of anyone being able to mail anyone else is GONE thanks to them. You fix the spammers then because I am NOT going back to the days when 99% of email hitting my systems was spam.

Frankly there are so many alternatives to sending mass mail from your own system, only highly suspicious people want to go around this. And yes, loss of freedom for one means loss of freedom for all... but the costs associated with combatting spam all on your own are just to big. Installing a DNS blacklist is a cheap reliable option and the number of people hurt by it are statistical rounding errors. Really, nobody I know still uses their own email system but instead uses something like gmail with their own domain name. I use Amazon. And gosh, it just works.

Basically, it all comes down who has to spend time and effort. The recipient or the mailer. Do YOU have to make sure as a sender that your system can send to everyone OR does the recipient have to make sure that he can receive from everyone?

The recipient is the person with the least interest here in case of spam AND indeed in regular emails. If some entity wants to mail me from some home IP in black listed range. What is my motivation in wanting to receive said message? The spammer/sender is the one who needs the message to be received.

AND ALL THIS BLACKLIST REQUIRES: Is that AFTER your system has been caught sending spam, it stops sending spam for 7 days. That is all. Just 7 days without spam. The AC whiner clearly is running a system that sends endless spam. He needs to deal with that and NOT demand the entire rest of the world open their system to his spammy criminal customers.

When you sign up for Amazon EMS there are several security measures in place to avoid you using their systems to send spam. That is because Amazon and other email providers spend a LOT of money making sure their IP range remains unblocked and they do this by having people actively making sure no spam is send through their system.

Is it that difficult to ask that an ISP does the same?

Again yes it sucks if you are caught in between but hey, there are alternatives and YOU are FREE to come up with a better system. In the meantime, I take my DNS blacklist thank you very much and not shed a tear about your home mail setup. Hey, at least it is better then in the old days when many including me would just black list entire regions of the world. And when it comes to a tool chain, you can't just modernize one because it is part of a chain and it would break the chain. Simply chaining a few parameters for grep would destroy how many scripts?

Outlawing it will solve drug issues? Because outlawing stuff stops people? WHEN?

The entire process of trying to stop crime, punish it and rehabilitate or otherwise deal with the criminals has been tried in countless way over thousands of years. And NONE work. Oh some claim some method works better then others but when you look at the figures it is pretty much like debating whether you tiger rock is better then my tiger stick. Both ultimately will have pretty much the same statistics.

And the ultimate lie? Recidivism rate. It counts re-offending criminals whose crimes are reported, investigated, prosecuted, sentended and the sentence recorded. Do you know how the rate of sentencing on some crimes are? Belgium scores 4% on rapes. 96 our of a hundred rapes are NOT counted in recidivism figures yet we are to believe only 70% of rapist re-offend? ONLY 70%?

THINK of the odds, what are they for a rapist who rapes twice to be sentenced TWICE?

But hey, vote for the guy who promises to fix it all. I am sure YOUR guys tiger gadget really works.

  23. Why so much water? on Possible Habitable Planet Just 12 Light Years Away · · Score: 1

You can recycle water. A LOT. Constantly in fact as long as you got electricity. Split your waste in Hydrogen an Oxygen, then combine it again and you got pure water. This idea that a lot of water is required is just plain inefficient. In a generational ship, your are going to have to recycle. EVERYTHING.

THINK first will you, sure a generational ship MIGHT seem like the perfect home for a slashdotter, a basement with all bills paid for BUT generational ships require breeding. Male and females. Sex.

Now I don't know about you, but as a real Slashdotter, that is a price to high to pay! I will stare death in the face and spit him in the eye but talk to a girl?!? NEVER!

  25. Eh... read the FIRST story, it is the more common on Whose Bug Is This Anyway? · · Score: 1

Eh... read the FIRST story, it is the more common one. As a fellow coder, I agree the FIRST story should be wiped from the face of the earth, less the fact that we nerds are not perfect in always writing code that compiles on the first run every time, ruins our image with the females of the species.

It is of course one of the annoying things in having to deal with bug reports, so many originate between the chair and the keyboard and since most of them bug reporters pay your salary you can't kill them. Because then they won't pay you. And that is bad. Sure, you can ask yourself what Jezus would do but Jezus didn't have a mortgage to pay did he?
