This is BAD and why procedures matter so fucking much. Countless crashes and subsequent loss of life have been caused by pilots mis-interpreting situations and then wrong correcting for them rather then first trying to determine what is really going on. If the captain had not interrupted the dive, it might have caused a collision because now both aircraft were on the same level rather then the 1000 feet separation demanded for safety.

Maybe it would be smart to not allow pilots to nap in the pilot seat and to do a mandatory 5 minute exercise before returning to the controls. Android is open, anyone can make an app. It is a free market. Apple is closed, your app has to be be vetted. It is a closed market. Closed markets are ALWAYS easier and safer then free markets. But the vetting takes place outside your control and you never can tell in advance when it will turn out to be harmful. Take Sony refusing to allows multiplayer for ME3. The windows platform for that game could never have such a blockage. But then, there is zero quality control for Windows games.

It has been the way to keep groups down for millenia, Jews are a famous example. Countries that claim to have been tolerant really just operated with "Don't be noticeable and we won't notice you to much".

The Catholic church was fine with evolution, they didn't push for creationism UNTIL Catholics who had accepted evolution made more sense then genesis started to think "wait a minute, if genesis is a fairy tale, then why is any of the rest true and why then is it required for me to remain silent about this priest in my ass?". Creationism and the attack on science didn't start until the church started to loose power because of it. In the 70's, people were still balancing the two. Proof? Their were plenty of scandals back then but people kept quiet because while they accepted evolution, they still believed as well. Enough to not risk upsetting the church. That has changed and the church NEEDS power. Without control, they are nothing. After all, you can talk to god anywhere, why pay for churches and priests when god is everywhere or nowhere?

The church isn't anti-evolution. It is anti-critical thinking. Critical thinkers wonder why the pope has a super luxerous seat on an airplane that could be carrying medicine. Just why gold is needed on a cross for a carpenter. And why people to poor to feed their kids should pay for it all. Can't have that.

The renaissance was another age the church lost a lot of power in because people started thinking. The post-war new age thinking (In Holland, ont-zuiling, the end of the columns of power, where your faith defined who you where and you trusted your boss, doctor and politicians without question) cripped the church even more, now they are determined not to become totally irrelevant. Because the most dangerous idea a church faces is a religious person who realizes that Jezus never founded a church. You can believe without ever going into a church or being buggered by a priest. That is scary as hell to the establishment, those kind of people might even believe you can love your country and STILL question it! It is no accident the religious zealots and the right wingers go hand in hand. Romney and co want you to believe, so you won't think and question. Not just god and the church but the free market, the wars, wallstreet bailouts. Breed, have lots of kids who can't afford to be picky about jobs so Ann Romney can afford a domestic while she bitches about her struggle as a super rich stay at home mom.

Or do you think the right like people having less children who can afford higher education and grow up to be thinking, questioning citizens? Things were so much better when people had a dozen kids who could be send of into domestic service for whatever usage the rich saw fit. And if a girl then inevitably got pregnant by a rich landlord after rape, well, that just ensured the supply of cheap labor would continue.

It is a fact that men have a lower average lifespan then women. Since it would be foolish to assume that men want do die younger it must therefor be women who are the cause of this. That is your logic. The races and genders are not equal. Only foolish bleeding hearts believe this, there are differences in alcohol tolerance, weight gain from sugar intake, heart disease risks and countless other diseases which affect one race more then the other.

To therefor blindly assume that all races and genders are equally good at programming is naive or downright hateful.

What are programmers? Well, from Slashdot you can readily deduce that a LOT of them are not the social norm. Gosh, could (functional) Autism which affects men more then women be over represented among computer programmers?

Historic fact is that when math became computers, women were OVER represented in the field. They were considered better at it. Sexist? Now they are under represented (worked with exactly 1 female co-worker in over a hundred men in my career, in my class there were two girls out of 25 boys and our class had a high number of girls, as in all the girls from that year).

Is this the male culture? Is it genetics? Is it culture? Is it race? Is it gender? Is it physical? If you deny any of them without investigation, you are ultimately doing everyone a disservice. It would be like denying that a soldier can't get Sickle Cell disease, because once they couldn't because blacks couldn't become soldiers. Now they can and a doctor would be wise to use race when trying to diagnose a person. Overly PC is harmful.

We have in western culture some typical male dominated professions and some typical female dominated once, and a lot of surprises with them if you think about it. Professors are male, teachers female. Why the shift in gender with the age of the pupil? Why are cafeteria run by women but top restaurants by men when women do most of the cooking in the world? Why are dress makers male?

Mind you, the Dutch government at least IS sponsoring men who want to teach younger kids, since it has been decided that a lack of male role-models can be harmful to the development of young boys. So it is not like white men are never the beneficiary of positive discrimination.

Fact is that women tend to score better at math then boys, until a certain age. Does a rise in estrogen kill of brain cells? An observation of teenage girls (curse you judge for taking away my binoculars!) tends to confirm this... then again, teenage boys have trouble chewing gum... and walking? HA! Have you seen a teenage boy try to walk?

Most companies I worked at were male dominated, I work in tech after all. But I also worked for a charity once and there the majority was women (very attractive ones to, that is where they are all hiding). So, even in "office" environments, there are gender separations, not so much along profession but along the type of company. Those women were nice enough to me as a male outsider BUT there was a seperation. Not so much because they refused to discuss female stuff when I was there, but because they did. I was raised by women and so raised to see women as delicate pure innocent creatures or they would hurt me. Talk to females not playing the gentle role on their own turf and "EEEEEK". Before that, as a I nerd I was slightly afraid of women, now I know I was right.

Can a workfloor gender culture have an effect? Duh! But can this be changed? And how?

There is no shortage of smart young girls. There is no shortage of young girls that might consider a tech career. There is a shortage of tech women on the workfloor. Something happens between the age of 10 and 20 that causes a shift.

I am a nerd who plays with model trains, not for the modeling but for the automated controlling of a train network, think of it as robotics for those who can't handle path finding. 11. Sigh, okay, once again, my guide to getting hired. on Maryland Bans Employers From Asking For Facebook Passwords · · Score: 3, Insightful

First off, the hiring process is a two way street. You are just as much interviewing the employer as they are you. If you feel at any time during the hiring process that the employer does not suit you, then STOP! Walk away, this is not the employer you are looking for.

For an employer, hiring a new person is a high cost and high risk hassle that is to often delayed. So rather then do the process when the workload is still manageable, they only start looking when everyone is working an 80 hour week and tracking the backlog has switched from a project manager to an archaeologist. With all this, they then have the task of defining the role, explaining this to a recruiter, putting it out and deal with the deluge of applicants many of who have no hope whatsoever. You wouldn't believe what responds at times to a job ad. But the employer has to shift through it all in the hope of finding the one non-lying, non-insane, non-slacker, non-enemy making freak out there. A freak after all is someone who is not normal so a normal person in the hiring process is a freak. Trust me on this.

So, having just lost a month worth of productive work in total, there you are with all your hopes and dreams, interviewee #5347. STAND OUT!

An employer wants ONE thing and one thing only. One: make more money or to get laid with the new hire. An employer wants two things and two things only, 1: more money, 2: sex 3: no loss in productivity. Three things, an employer wants three things only.

To this end, the employer has a number of choices:

    • Not hire anyone, after all what does an 80 hour week hurt anyway and productivity would go up if people didn't have to waste time interviewing candidates.
    • Hire someone else then you.
    • Hire you.
    • Start the hiring process again with a new batch of candidates.

If you see malice in the above, that says a lot about you and a good employer would spot this and not hire you. If you never hired anyone or had to work with a new co-worker, you might not fully grasp just how much productivity is lost with not just the hire process but getting a new person up to speed. And (small) companies typically only hire once the workload has gotten to high already, so more work getting you up to speed will only make things worse. An employer wants to make sure that things afterwards will at least get better.

So how do you convince an Employer that HE/SHE/IT/THEY will BENEFIT from hiring you after the HUGE cost and hassle of hiring YOU? Simple, identify those costs and hassles and show how they can be minimized by you, or how they are not so bad after all.

Skills matter less then the capacity to acquire new ones quickly. Any new job will require new skills. Who cares you knew how to work with the systems of your old company, how quickly will you learn the systems at your new job? Emphasize NOT your experience with a system but how quickly you learned it. On your own. Self-study the new companies system shows they don't have to waste productivity teaching you.

Nobody likes a trouble-maker. Employers don't want strive among their employees, it costs productivity and they are hiring you to boost it. Don't boast about how buddy buddy you were with a small number of your ex-co-workers. Show you can get along with everyone and can just shrug off difficult co-workers without actually implying that you personally thought person X was difficult. Yes, that is bland. Bland is good, it has low risk.

Show how working for THEM benefits YOU. An employee who benefits is unlikely to leave. Make this benefit seem longer then the next paycheck.

SO, HOW DOES THIS ALL TIE INTO SOCIAL MEDIA?

Simple, an employer wants to know who you really are. Both of you are pretending during the interview. Simple dating advice is not to look at how the person interacts with you but with others. For women especially, want to avoid an abusive relationship? See how he deals with waiters and others in a subserviant role. That is how he will treat you once the honeymoon is
