Yea, and thank whatever mythological being you worship for that. This may come as a shock for... hell, probably most people here, but the vast majority of people that use computers are not computer geeks. Nor do they particularly want to be one. You see, they don't do this stuff for a living. They are doctors, lawyers, accountants. Burger joint paddy flippers, whatever the hell you want to insert. They spend most of their time doing their other job, they don't want to come home and start a second one learning all the ins and outs of the OS. Becoming a PC security mini-expert. They want to just locate and view their porn, play their games, do their budgets, etc. And I am more than happy for that to be the case. I get paid to fix their computers and show them how to do simple stuff. And remove the spyware from their computers.

Its not like Transmeta just patented a bunch of ideas and sat on them like a lot of people do, or worse buy up a bunch and sit on them.

I agree that going into Iraq was the right thing, though I have always had reservations on the validity of their reasoning. I just think Sodamn Insane had to go. Regardless, we should have already been done with this thing and pulled out.

On the domestic front, Bush and company have committed sins. The patriot act was a travesty. The administration has trampled all over our rights in an effort to find the "terrists". While I agree it is important to find them, I would rather not give up the rights I enjoy as an American in that effort. Find them through normal means. The sin Bush is most guilty of is making me ALMOST embarassed to be American in some cases. That thing I can never forgive him for. I am not a liberal, but then I am also not a conservative. People at both ends of that spectrum are batshit crazy.

Frankly I couldn't care less who wins the next election, they are likely to be just as wacked. Its just the question of what they will damage when in office.

Having seen several replies along this vein, I am surprised that people can actually believe this. Necessity is the mother of invention. War brings a special kind of necessity. War focuses the research more on application and less on theory. It results in real tangible, usable technologies. Peacetime research can also do this but it often focuses more on the theoretical and lets the market create the products and people often hesitate to do this, a product has to be proven to be profitable before it is made. During wartime profit is of no consequence, the product can be useful thus it is made, then that serves as proof to the marketplace and it moves into civilian hands. Do you really believe that peacetime research brings practical product to the market than wartime reseach?
