That would NOT be a good idea. The reason is simple, businesses almost NEVER do pure research. Its hard to turn the results directly into money, and (rightfully) that is all a business is there for. Taxpayer funded programs do the pure research, then businesses take the result and do the research needed to turn that into a product. Take the Fed out of research and a lot of innovation will come to a grinding halt.

Last time I looked at the cable guide on my television 2/3rd of it was this horrid and annoying ad space, and then there was room for 2 or maybe 3 lines of guide data. The stupidity of it made me want to scream. I have been a Tivo subscriber for a long time now and never have to deal with it, thank goodness.

I couldn't agree more. I use Firefox for two reasons - 1) It isn't IE, and 2) The extensions. In fact, I have about 30 I use on every machine I use Firefox. Sure, it would be faster if I didn't use them, or used less of them, but then I would lose a LOT of functionality. There has to be a tradeoff, and I am comfortable with a slightly slower browser that has a whole lot more features that appeal to me. The machines I use aren't exactly speed demons, but they aren't low end trash either, so they have power to spare, why not utilize it.

This does illustrate my issue with voting in this country, and why I have never played that game. It is a game, they hold up two people (well, there is the third token independent) and ask you to choose. If you ask me to choose between hanging or the guillotine it doesn't matter, in either way I'm going to die horribly, what kind of choice is that?

Don't be a maroon. Sure the info is free, but aggregating it and putting it into a format usable by a particular service is not necessarily so. They have to spend the time to develop the software to put it together for you, and the bandwidth to feed it to you. If they want to attach a very small fee to that service, why are you so angry about it? You could always write the software to do it and pay for the bandwidth to do it yourself.

Oh, you meant bodily harm? The woman is obviously human waste and frankly, the world would not have missed her and would be a better place without her. Bearing in mind what the lady did to her, I would convict her at most on misdemeanor assault.

By the way, the judge in this case is an asshole. The lady was already on probation she should be in jail for years now for what she did. Instead, they are gong to go find a pot smoker to stick in jail for several years to fill that spot.

Actually, it sounds like a case of too much government to me. Taxation is a necessary evil, but the jackasses in power have it set up so they can waste all the funds they want and instead of answering for it, they just tax us more to make up for it. There should be a cap and they should be made to work within that, if they can't then find someone who can.

Maybe this will save some other little jackasses some problems. I hope they lose the case and the suspension stays in place. There is little enough order in school these days since educators have no way to enforce rules other than kicking the little shits out. Their parents certainly can't be bothered to teach them the small detail that school is a place to learn and not a social gathering hall.

  20. Re:Arrr! on Pirate Bay to Purchase Sealand? · · Score: 2, Informative

I think the primary problem with your thinking is you like to equate disagreement with you as stupidity. Here, let me show you.

"but the people who say stuff like "Oh, piracy isn't stealing" (I'm not referring to just music here) are just as stupid."

There is not a consensus that obtaining a digital copy is stealing. Whether you want to believe it or not, there still is the inescapable point that in many cases if I obtain a copy of your so and so and had NO intention what so ever to buy it in the first place, you have lost nothing. So, how can that be theft? You must lose something for theft to have occurred.

    From www.m-w.com:

    Main Entry: theft
1 a : the act of stealing; specifically : the felonious taking and removing of personal property with intent to deprive the rightful owner of it b : an unlawful taking (as by embezzlement or burglary) of property.

Of course, if you follow theft with steal and look at the many definitions of the word "steal" just the right way, you COULD twist it into having been stolen. But you really do have to do some gymnastics with the situation to make it fit that too. While I can understand your position, and prefer to buy my music, unfortunately its just too damn expensive. When the music industry gets their head out of their asses and prices music reasonably I will buy all of my music. Until then, I will buy what I can, and obtain the rest however I do.
