It isn't about destroying Microsoft! Think about it; we destroy Microsoft and replace them with Apple. Another closed system! Why is that of any benefit to us, as users and developers?

Because Microsoft makes a lousy operating system and Apple makes a great one. Most open source software users don't use it because they think its The Right Thing, they use it because its better software.

Oh, my tastes aren't free speach?
"Why don't you just admit that the only reason you are against the DMCA is because you want to steal the work of others, personally."
    I steal nothing. I don't violate copyrights. I have zero mp3s.

You're missing the point. (It is possible and likely that I did not explain it very well.) Free speach is okay. Hurting others physically, emotionally, psycologically, and spiritually is not. You can go into a public school and tell everyone that you are an atheist, and explain why you are. You should not be able to prevent theists from saying they are theists, explaining why they are, and communicating with their God. (i.e. Disallowing prayer in public schools.) You believe that there is no god. Me praying does not pose a problem to you or your beliefs. I believe that there is a god and that I should communicate with that god. You saying I am not allowed to do so with others who believe the same thing does pose a problem to my beliefs.

So if the ACLU wants to fight so you can go downtown with a megaphone and yell "There is no god!", I'm all for it. If the ACLU wants to fight so you can go downtown with a megaphone and read and display pornographic material, I am against it. If the ACLU wants to fight so I cannot pray aloud in schools, I am against it. (Allowing me to pray does not force you to.)

As soon as you draw a line for yourself saying "I support free speech, but those guys at NAMBLA are too repulsive" then you're making a distinction of speech based on taste.

It may not be a distinction based on taste, but one based on morals or beliefs. I support this fight against the DMCA, because I believe it is a violation of free speech and consumer rights. I do not support a fight for the rights to speak of those who would spread pornography, hate, and violence, as it is a violation of morality. I do not support a fight to remove prayer from the schools, because saying there is not God isn't just speach, its factually incorrect and the denial of God is the root cause of humanity's fall.

Here's the problem: getting in an accident is not pure chance. Its not like rolling a die for every mile. A large part of it is based on driver skill and attention. If I've driven 30 miles to work every day for 15 years and have never had an accident doing so, and Joe has driven 1 mile to work every day for 15 years, and has had 2 accidents doing so, who should have the higher rate? Joe. Who has the higher rate? Me.

How about writing a program that looks just like AIM (minus the ads), acts [almost] like AIM, but uses an existing IRC network? Instead of using the buddynames on IRC, have some algorithm that uses some long alphanumeric string unlikely to be used by an IRC'er. Get the user info and away messages from ctcp requests. Store buddy lists as topics in a private channel named by the same string used for the irc nick. Hmm, I can't think of a good way to tell whem people go on/off line. What about making a network specifally for instant messaging. . .oh, jabber!

No. Make people pay based on their driving record. A 40 year old with a few accidents, a speeding ticket every 5 years, and a new car will pay less than a 21 year old who's had a liscense for 5 years and has a perfect record, but a 13 year old car with 215,000 miles and no "safety features".

Side note: I guess when I go looking for a new (used) car, not only won't I be able to find one without power steering, power door locks, power windows, power adjustable heated seats, and 374 cupholders, I won't be able to get one without breaking distance lengthening ABS brakes, child killing air bags, and expensive black boxes that won't do any good. This is probably not the case. If the forked version has feature X that most people want, and yours doesn't, they'll take the fork. If the fork has www.programfork.com and you are member.isp.com/~you/program.html, people will find the fork. If the fork has a higher listing on google, people will find the fork. If Microsoft makes a fork and includes it in windows, people will use the fork. If the editors took the time to verify all 'news', it would come up days later. Half the stuff we see would never even get reviewed. And the editors aren't good journalists. They're not even good edtiOrss. They are good at getting stuff up quick, which I believe was their goal.
