True. They have a really good geography, that really help defense. you can enter the country only through a couple of place, the rest are hard to pass mountains. And yes, all adult male own a firearm, with a seal on it, to be broken only in case of invasion. They have some high tech universities, are very carefull of their environment. They go voting some law most sunday. (citizens can directly propose a law. Many cities are souveraign states). Taxes and bureaucratie are very low yet the healthcare system is very good, for most of them are always in perfect health, for they care themself for it, through perfect nutrition. (Damn, I am french and I admire their bread and cheese ! ). Swiss are... the most clever and lucky people on earth. For them, France is a brutal third world country dictatorship :-)

On unemployment beneficit, and of social wealth.

Like you, it seem, I am european. I disagree with you.

Unemployment benefits give more freedom to people. You can have these people employed to be free of searching what they want, building human "social network", or employed to go to war, build useless polluting crap, sold with awfull agressive marketing or do posturing in academic, doing pseudo science under orders.

We have already too much highway, too much fabrics, too much obedient people. We need real *innovation*, and lucidity, which can only be done by totally free thinkers.

The other day, an unemployed ex student of sociologie, came to my door, just to chat, to know my opinion, and give me the opinion he heared from others. Isn't it interesting ?

What are "lazy radicals the way of the middle east" ? Religious Zelot with an extrem right Agenda ??? For your informatin, the middle east is doing it's best, using it's poor geographical ressources. (oil is *not* a richess. Try eating it. Easy agriculture in a good climat is fondamentally what made us rich, and allowed industrial and cultural developpment. Historically, Irak, Egypte, Greece, were in the old time, with the same favorable climat.

Some time you should disconnect your computer and look at what you eat. And think about it.

As you seem to be very intelligent, clever, and good willing, and seem to have a lot of experience dealing with the writing of OS, GUI, and generally big software that are used by millions of persons, you shall stop ranting about the use of higher level language (HLL) and actually demonstrate their power by actually writing cool software using it. I am waiting for you ueber LISP or Java Operating System. Or perhaps Perl :-) Or perhaps you should evangelize MS into doing full C#. Then you may discover that security pbs does not consist just into checking null pointers, and that you can still write insecure software using very HLL. I also wait for maximum performance and security of your magic compiler translating very complex HLL algorithms into efficient MMX-Altivec- asembly langyuage, and automagic correct management of interlangugage linking. Hint : these pbs have very complex theorical developments, including checking of complex properties of complex programs written using complex language. Program carrying proof, model checking, temporal logic... Bad programs can be written in any language.

  8. Beware, american geeks : this is not slacking... on Vive La Loafing! · · Score: 0

Beware american geeks. This is not just "lazy slacking." This something much more complexe :-)

According to the french comments on amazon, this book is targeted only to the "cadres", the managers, in big "obsolete" "undead" corporations. The french public service for electricity (EDF) is taken as an example.

EDF, like the "education national", the railroad, and the army, are places of intense socialism. These places do not run on market economy, or money meritocracy, but on social power to raise taxes, and on an initial very strict hierarchy based on school grade. The grade you got at school determine in France your ability to get to some management level in public "services".
Slacking here is unionizing, building social recognition, vision, and is a very hard job.
To put it simply, you can go up only through a mini local mao-like cultural revolution :-) And the best thing to do is to share knowledge and good ideas to build social demand for it rather than realising them and asking credit for them.

For example, simple digital counting technologies may allow to put ten of thousands of electrical workers out of jobs... So you first have to build a solution to change with dignity, the social role of these people, before suppressing their jobs with the technology. And the people are logically right in wanting to keep the obsolete job which allows them to be in control of the system/capital ! Better than a share or option, an essential job !

I am french, have correct diplomas, and worked in public services ;-) (and may go again :-) And I am still learning the complexity of french social-liberalism ;-). I used to be promoting liberalism and innovation : I didn't get fired, but feel alienated and finished to feel totally worthless and quit. So now I am much more mitigated.
My guess is that it's the same in some USA states services.

Dear slashdotters, at 50 km of were I live there is Verdun. Here, there are militaries cimetaries with 600000 little white crosses. German and French sometime mixed. In 1914 we fought over coal and iron mines. Alsace and Lorraine. Then in 1930 Hitler had this fantastic idea of building weapons and massives armies to employ the overpopulation, while we were engaged into softer socialism. (1936 : payed hollydays.) As Hitler invaded Pologne, France declared war with Germany. Germany invaded France and win the war in no time. Some french collaborated with the germans, saying they were of better moral, some get out in the south of France (free France), some resisted (and get sometimes tortured then killed), and some get to work for free in Germany as slaves. Many people of this time were racists, xenophobes, egoists, rancunniers. They didn't saw the big picture, and they pay the big price for it. Both France and Germany had colonial empires. At this time socialist were integrists that destroyed the christian religion which united europeans. Nationalist were here to defends their "race". Owners wanted to defend their possession. Everyone wanted a farm and ten childs to exploit. social research, artists, intellectuel, were regarded as inefficient, a cost to the system. Useless. Young were to be trained to obey. People took proud in obeying the system and sacrifying themself for "the good of the nation". They believed than their god was better, bigger, than the one of the other nation of sinners who would go to hell afterdeath. I pray for you. Pray for all of us ! If you want to make a better place of this world, go, travel, talk with everybody, everywhere. Publish. Create communication systems. And places for tired and angry people to rest. Organise feast for people to talk together. Work less for material. Study art, science, history, religions, medicines, ecology. Doubt of everything. Breed less, educate more, not only your children, but all children and adults. Let's pray/think all for all the poor guys that don't have enough to get housing, to eat, are sick, angry, or without hope.
