    Theres already a gentoo based UT2k3 demo livecd, making one for halflife couldnt be too hard.

    Run your VCs in a framebuffer that is the same rez as X, preferably run X in a fb to.
    X sucks in a FB, as does VCs in my not so humbe oppinion, But that would make it almost instant.

    The biggest delay on switching X->VC is the rez change.

    Actually, Google does that for you.
    Just search for the file name you want and it will find you a nice ammount of mirror, Especially if you tag on "Index Of".
    At one point I made a script to crawl through google results displaying exact file size - url, it would be trivial to
    A) Try them all, kill whichever is slowest.
    B) Download in chunks from each server with resume requests.
    C) Profit!!

    I kind of abandoned it, but if anyone is interested I still have it around. just msg me on irc (see nick name) or aim (see slashdot profile) and I'll send it to you. Disclaimer: Its messy shell script.

    Unfortunetly my harddrive is dying quick, so I might not be around much today.

    Intel dosnt realise we already have the speed we need. I'm not going to upgrade to a faster proc when my current proc is fast enough- however, I would upgrade to a 64bit proc for all the new benifits of that.

    Or even worse(and sadly, more accurately?), What if you dialed the wrong number and got someone who is a terrorist? The logs dont show that you dialed the wrong number, They just show you're associated with terrorism.

    The RTFM mentality is mostly a myth. Sure it exists in a lot of people, but overall support from the OSS scene is much better.
    Idle in #debian on freenode for a few days and you'll see what I mean. Compare that to paying microsoft for support and having them still not able to help you any better than the Physcic Helpline and its obvious which is better.

    Also, OSS developers are much more accessable.
    Compare:
    1) Valve's new anti-cheat detects me running halflife in linux as a cheat [yet dosnt detect a lot of aimbots and wallhacks, but thats another rant]. Mail valve, get no response.

    2) Talked to a few friends about the Playername server plugin that prints name/health of people in an easy to read font when you look at them, decied it would be cool to have it show weapon to. Go on gamesnet, talk to the developer, he's adding it in the next version.

    It's all in where you look and how you ask.
    Dont expect people to help, be polite, realise theyre doing this only for the gratitude they get.
    Demand help, get RTFM.

    Upgrades. Factor in price of upgrading the server vs. upgrading all clients.
    Also, expandability is much better - just throw another term on.
    Large markets might also like the control aspect, to. Employees wont slack off as much if they arnt allowed to add any applications (aim, games, whatever).

    No.
    Being able to play PSX games will make more XBox's sell, Which in turn will sell more XBox games. People arnt just going to buy XBox's to emulate PSX games, Otherwise they could save $200 and just get a PSX.

    Also, I doubt sony would make much money from this. It would just lure the people in that own 50 odd PSX games that dont want to give them up.

    In 7 years? of course. 7 years ago, did the 200gig+ harddrives we have today make sense? Sure, you have your gifs, your texts from the scene, etc, but thats only a few houndred megs MAX.

    Factor in constant gps tracking on your palm (A neat new idea no ones done that I know of), Maybe throw some video/mp3 storage (recording?) on there since everyone likes integration.. 20gb sounds great.

    Because you installed them? If you don't like it, don't use it.

    Personaly, I'd rather use vi style (map commands to keys), But mouse gestures beat the hell out of popup menus. Once you get used to them its hard to back to actually paying attention where the cursor is in relation to toolbar.

    Also, selecting text dosnt effect it. Most mouse gestures use mouse2, or can be configured to. I like to highlight text to mark place if im going afk for a sec, or to invert color on badly made pages, and it never bothered me.

    DCCs are initiated by a privmsg, which is easy to stop(or mangle -- maybe make it send dalnets 'warez stopping dcc bot' ip which will send them some file explaining the new policy instead).

    While I do agree with you (and most things you post), I think cloning breakthroughs could lead to some nice impersonation that could help. Granted, the timeframe on this wouldnt be any time soon enough to be relevant, but technology is technology.

    I normaly don't respond to anonymous cowards, but since the CrackheadMods(tm) modded you up, I thought I would point out that the breakthrough isnt that someone wrote up specs to crack keys in $10M, it's that they found a way to do it more efficient. Breakthroughs like this make it so the timeframe is cut drasticly. Also, your crypto is meaningless. If I wanted your $3K I'd hold a gun to your head when you're at an atm.

    We spent $10M just on the clinton/lewinksi trials, We could easily piss it away on building this machine and start hitting up other countries secure communications, or sign things as other countries and start wars.

    I wont dispute that Apple is one of the biggest UNIX venders, but don't think for a second that that is a good thing.
