  1. You must be kidding on Anandtech Dissects The New iPod · · Score: 5, Informative
The new firmware also comes with a couple of new games; back from the original iPod is breakout (called "Brick" for some reason), which is a toned down version of the arcade original - Arkanoid.
Arkanoid the original? Atari's Breakout predates Arkanoid by years. And that Atari game have, shall we say, some ties with the company that brings you the iPod.

BTW, there was a version of it on the Apple ][ as well.

  2. e-book reader from Matsushita on LCD Screens Almost Paper-thin · · Score: 3, Informative
How about an application like this e-book reader (Japanese news release and pictures). Here is a CNET article that talks about it.

Basically, it is 2 XGA displays at 180dpi that doesn't require refresh, so can last a few months on 2 AA batteries. It reads contents stored on an SD card. The weight is only 500 gram. I like physical books compared to bulky PDAs with small screens, but something like this could become serious competition to them.

Not exact two-factor, but how about one time passwords if you are afraid of keyboard sniffers?

  4. The REAL mission on Bombing the Moon for Water · · Score: 1

They would like you to think they're trying to find water, but their real mission is to breach that barrier to the monolith they found 2 years ago.

  5. They have bested themselves on PCMCIA Announces NEWCARD Format · · Score: 1

In unimanginative naming, that is. I thought "PC Card" was quite bad already. "Newcard" tells you nothing about the technology, is not catchy, and will be obsolete in a few months (when it is not "new" anymore). I hope they didn't pay anybody for the name.

  6. Original Article on What Lawyers Can Learn From Manga · · Score: 2, Informative
The article Lessig referred to is available here.

There is another reason publishers are reluctant to go after doujinshi writers. There are quite a few professional manga artists that got their start by writing doujinshi. Some publishers see the doujinshi market as training ground for new professional manga artists, from where they can hire the best. Also, some are afraid of offending their artists, who still have many connections with the doujin field.

  7. Re:See the Annoying Ads near you on AT&T/DoCoMo Deal For W-CDMA Deployment In U.S. · · Score: 1

Hmm... I don't think you are seeing the same ads. DoCoMo advertises their 3G W-CDMA service using their service mark FOMA. CDMA (2G) ads are by au/KDDI, their competitor.

  8. Defibrillators on Medical Briefcase For In-Flight Patient Evaluation · · Score: 1

In Japan, there are no public access defibrillators. One of the relatives of the Emperor passed away suddenly this year due to heart trouble during sports. It is said that he could have been saved if a defibrillator was applied in time. They are now considering changing the law to allow non-medical-doctors to use the equipment, and to install them in public areas.

    From the article:
"The proof is in the hydrino pudding. The question is, when are you going to have desktop hydrino pudding?"
Regardless of the validity of the research, this comment sounds unfair to me. You can say the same about nuclear fusion, which is also being researched for a long time. When are we going to have desktop nuclear fusion?
  11. Re:Vunerability on University of Twente NOC Destroyed · · Score: 2, Insightful
This shows the vunerability of putting all computers in one building.
Actually, the debian.org names affected all point to a single box, satie.debian.org. Your point is still valid, though. Come to think about it, that makes it _more_ valid, as only one box crashing will take down all your services.
  12. Re:Yes, but what about DVD-RAM? on The Ulltimate DVD Burner? · · Score: 1

The Sony one doesn't. However, you can buy this drive already in Japan, that handles DVD-RAM/-R/-RW, plus CD-R/RW. Personally I'd want my rewritables in a cartiage - considering the data density you don't want to scratch the media!

  13. Most annoying game ever on Awari Solved · · Score: 3, Funny
If it is playing a perfect game, then it would be able to follow your moves all the way to the end of the game and see that you could win.
I can see it now: a computer game that keeps popping up "warning: you already won, continue playing to endgame? Yes/No" after each move until you make a mistake, it which case it pops up "warning: You made a mistake. Duh. I win. Game Over ", since the computer will not make a mistake.
  14. More Info on Turbolinux Sells Linux Business · · Score: 1
    Press Release from Turbolinux Inc.

Press Release from Turbolinux Japan (in Japanese)

Another article from NikkeiBP (in Japanese)

    The main points are:

    • Turbolinux Inc. sold Turbolinux Japan K.K. (its Japanese subsidary) to SRA. (This is the $1 mil. transaction according to Slashdot Japan (in Japanese))
    • Turbolinux Japan K.K. will become the new Turbolinux Inc.
    • Turbolinux Inc. also sold all its Linux distribution business, logo, trademarks to SRA, but the price is not yet disclosed.
    • SRA is also planning to buy the Chinese and Korean joint ventures between Turbolinux Inc. and local companies.
    • The old Turbolinux Inc. will change its name to CenterRex and focus on software it developed like PowerCockpit or EnFusion.
So yes, Turbolinux Inc. seems to be getting out of the distribution business altogether and they are not going to retain the name and sell Turbos :-)
