Good actors get into character and ad-lib, you'd be surprised at how much actors will change a script (for good or ill). Good speakers get into their presentation, feel out the audience and ad-lib.

    On camera, yes.

On stage, unless it's specifically improv, no.

Other responses to this idea have put it better than I could, but in stage productions, one generally sticks to the script, and a fundamental principle is that the words of the playwright are sacrosanct. This is in contrast to cinema (at least in Hollywood), where the writers are generally treated as shit (unless they are also the producer or have a megahit track record), and the director is usually seen as the "auteur".

My pet peeve is when people insist that a representative republic is not a form of democracy, and that a direct democracy is the only form that is entitled to the name.

But we're quibbling over semantics when it appears that we agree about the larger issues. I completely agree with your point that, due to a variety of circumstances, not the least of which are talent and effort, there exists inequalities. And this should be so.

We might further argue other points, such as to what degree this should be so, or even whether there should be any limitations on economic and power differentials. But basically we agree that there will be differentials and that this is proper. Meanwhile, it is also proper that we have equal rights under the law and the same basic opportunity to pursue whatever makes us happy or improves our lives (ideally on a level playing field, but we must also be realistic about that, too.) While I understand others cynicism about this, I think that we have this system even if it's imperfectly realized.

At least I think we agree on this. =)

Your correct in some ways, but you're forgetting about equal protection under the law and the concept of justice. If you're cynical, you probably believe that there is no such thing as everyone being equal under the eyes of the law, but it's a basic foundation of democracy.

A private individual or corporation can be sued in civil court for civil rights violations.

While the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the further amendments are generally enumerated as protections from an over-reaching government, they are also legal embodiments of basic human or civil rights.

I got news for you. The problems Apple had were not introduced by Gil Amelio. Amelio kept Apple alive during his tenure. If Amelio hadn't been there, there would be no Apple for Jobs to come back to. Furthermore, it was under Amelio that Apple bought NeXT (or as some wags would have it, NeXT bought Apple for negative $400 million), paving the way for Jobs to retake the helm.

No, if you want to blame Apple's problems on anyone, it should be Spindler and Sculley.

There's public speaking and then there's show biz. An actor doesn't memorize an outline of a script. He memorizes the script. Jobs is all show biz. He's not up there giving a speech. He performs. I guess you gotta see it with your own eyes.

My guess is that Phil Schiller is the heir apparent. If (God Forbid) Jobs were to drop dead, I'm sure the market would (over)react*, but Apple has succeeded not just because of Steve's leadership, but also because of the team he has put in place. He doesn't run the company single-handed, despite his legendary status and mythic qualities.

  20. Showmanship and Attention to Detail on Behind a Steve Jobs Keynote · · Score: 5, Interesting
None of this scrupulous preparation should be a surprise, coming from Jobs. He's always had a flair for the dramatic, and he knows how to achieve it. Contrast it with the disastrous keynote given by Gil Amelio:

There were bad omens from the beginning. Instead of having a speech laid out word for word, Amelio would speak from a detailed outline. According to Amelio, his writer (whose identity has yet to be revealed) was behind schedule and making excuses. Revisions continued to be made up until show time.

To make matters worse, the TelePrompTer malfunctioned, garbling most of the text that had been loaded on it.

The other presenters did not fare so well either. Nobody had told them where they would enter the stage or how to stand so the cameras could pick them up.

Because of the malfunctioning TelePrompTer, Amelio had to ad lib the order of appearances and ended up inadvertently snubbing Muhammad Ali. What was scheduled to last for 1-1/2 hours droned on to 3 full hours, ruining the finale of Steve Wozniak appearing with Steve Jobs.

Macworld San Francisco was a disaster, and Amelio was in the middle of it. The press had a field day with his poor performance, spawning a new term in Apple parlance, a droneathon. Amelio was embarrassed by his performance and took the blame for it. Only later was it revealed that he was largely a victim of the mistakes of others.

I've been buying Macs since 1991, but the first time I bought extended Applecare was when I purchased the Ti 800 DVI Powerbook, and I'm glad I did. Not because I had lots of problems with it, but because when I did have problems with the CD burner after the first year, they were promptly repaired. As a bonus, some external damage to the case (which was my fault) was repaired as well. The cheapest of the estimates for that repair was more than I paid for the Applecare, so I figured AppleCare has more than paid for itself. The last repair was a broken hinge a few weeks shy of the warranty expiration. This time, they also replaced the keyboard! (One of the keys had gotten melty from my carelessness with a cigarette.)

I highly recommend AppleCare if you're getting a laptop from Apple. You can even get AppleCare for a factory refurb.

You kids! Haven't you learned not to peak at your presents before Christmas Day?

Seriously, once I got over having expectations for either Christmas presents or the Keynote, I stopped being so disappointed and started enjoying both Christmas and MWSF much more.

I can remember a group of us being stunned that our hoped-for "Apple PDA" turned out to be the iPod. We felt so betrayed at the time. But look how that turned out. And meanwhile, the PDA market has mostly been stagnant, or has merged with (read: become a feature of) telephony.

So pull up a deck chair, grab a kool aid, sit back, and prepare to have the warm emanations of the RDF wash over you pleasantly.
