I know it used to be that mounting a drive vertically used to shorten the lifespan of the drive

That's because until the invention of stickier platters, all the bits would eventually drift down to the bottom of a platter, thus causing it to wobble out of balance.

I'm not a "Christian Rock fan", but if the music is good, the religious denomination of the band members shouldn't matter. Oh, and Low doesn't market itself as a Christian Rock group, but it's definitely there in the lyrics.

But alcoholics don't have much political sway in our society.

You're kidding me, right? Who's the president of your country?

On the other hand, AA officially eschews being involved in public controversy of any sort. The "10th Tradition" of AA is "Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the A.A. name ought never be drawn into public controversy." So, on an individual level, alcoholics might or might not be offended, but the AA organization would not take a position on South Park one way or the other.

Apple also offers a family pack for $199, which is probably what I'll buy when 10.5 comes out.

What I did for the older Powerbook was load an OEM copy of Panther Server I picked up for $179, because I've always wanted to dick around with OS X Server.

A good indication of this was that the OS X Tiger Install DVD that came with my new Powerbook couldn't be installed on my older Powerbook. I guess my "free" upgrades are over. Yeah, I know, not exactly fair or ethical, but easily rationalized by the large amount of money I spend on Apple gear. I didn't feel entitled but because there weren't such blocks in the past I felt that it wasn't a big deal for Apple.

However, as you point out, given the upgrade cycle of OS X, with so many improvements at so many levels (under the hood, apps, GUI, etc.; in short, major changes and fine details), it is clear that Apple is investing considerable time, effort, and money into OS X and they want to see a return.

So I think they'll continue to see OS X as a source of revenue. As far as I can tell/guess, there is a roadmap past 10.5.

At any rate, I'm happier with the upgrade cycle, compared to the long stretch between System 7.x and OS 8. Man, those days sucked.

You lost me on that one. To me, Cheney is a corrupt Corporatist/Fascist. I don't think you can compare him to either Eisenhower or Reagan. Ike was the greatest Republican since Teddy until Reagan. Reagan tops Ike, and might be the all time greatest since Lincoln if he hadn't been plagued with the Iran-Contra scandal and if he hadn't entered into an alliance with the Fundamentalist Christians. (This last item has been more disastrous for the GOP than Iran-Contra, even while propelling "us" to power. I put the "us" in quotes because I am an anti-Bush, anti-neocon, anti-theocon Republican, sadly far out of (lock) step with the majority of the party.)

Anyway, my esteem for you is great enough that I'll just consider this a small mental slip on your part and won't think less of you for it.
