The article says they are not putting it on because it is incompatible with there system, would cause disruptions, and needs some technological modifications. They are CONCERNED about privacy issues, but didn't say no based on that. Unless this is just a delay tactic to try to build a case against Carnivore, it'll probably just go away once the FBI patches the system
You say that you don't think it is reasonable to control how information is found, after it has been published, and that if you are relying on published media then that is a bad business model. Well, have you ever bought a book? The people who publish those books control what book their material goes in. Otherwise they don't get paid. I sincerely doubt there would be nearly as many reference type books available if people were unable to make any money from them. Software gets written for free because it is an enjoyable mental exercise. Free documentation projects are a lot more sparse, and there is a reason. It isn't really all that much fun to follow after the guy doing the coding and write down how he did stuff. Advertising at least allows people to make enough money to pay for having the site up to give you the information for free.
The site for unmaintained Free Software Projects becomes unmaintained... I wonder how many of these lists there are out there that are unmaintained themselves
What they are patenting is using a registry to check the system for newer packagese against a database on the internet, and then at the user's discretion download those packages and automatically install them off the internet. They aren't patenting simply having packages, or a package management system. Basically they are patenting Window's Update, and although it is annoying, I don't think it hurts us too much, as the language seemed specific enough to allow someone to make a comparable system that operated in a diffferent way
It looks like people think Slashdot is interviewing her, which is not the case here. ANOTHER web page besides Slashdot has interviewed her, and a link to this interview is provided. We do not get to ask questions and the highest moderated get sent, so people/moderators please do not spend too much time coming up with good questions and moderating them
Most of you are probably still in college, so don't have the perspective to see it. Right now you want a piece of paper so you can get your job so you can succeed. However, that probably means that you don't have the time in school to play around with delving into a certain field of history or philosophy, maybe even because of the risk that it would bring your GPA down. 5 years from now, when you decide you really wish you knew something about a certain subject, you can log onto this Online University, and broaden your mind. Maybe you won't get anywhere with the piece of paper, maybe you won't even get a piece of paper, but you will be a better, more rounded person, and that is worth a lot more
For those that didn't read the article, the idea isn't that a group of hackers all crash the big party, but a large group of hackers pool their resources. You aren't giving away your life savings, each person wouldn't even individually have to spend that much. Also, you aren't investing in these various Big Business companies for the long term. The trust only needs to buy the stock a short while before the meeting to be able to vote. I'm sure we could find some trustworthy group of people, which includes someone with a good knowledge of the stock market, to run something like this. When the stock isn't in a particular BB it can be invested like a mutual fund, so that chances are you will actually make money off of this. If only 100 or so people committed themselves, with around 500 dollars each, that would give us 50,000 dollars, enough to buy a large enough block to be heard. And I don't think it's unrealistic to think if this is well organized we could get a good deal more than that
The area where this could actually become something is the European Union. France has brought this to their attention, and they are investigating it. England spying on member nations and helping a non-member nation to compete unfairly against other members is not going to be well regarded. Also, the European Union is big enough to be able to make a stink, even if France isn't
According to the article, Betelgeuse's radius is actually closer to the distance from the sun to Jupiter, and it is the second brightest, not the brightest, star in that system. The usefulness is that the information will help people understand the assymetrical nature of the pulsing of super giants, which I suppose could have implications for other areas, what I don't really know
You aren't neccessarily selling the "software", you could be selling the ability to join "the group", one priviledge of which is access to the software. With a little work, this kind of arrangement could probably be worded into a EULA, where you agree to join the group by purchasing, etc. This could allow companies to in effect charge for products that use GPL code, and not release their modifications, if I understand the arguments correctly
A random number generator based off of a pint of guiness and a random number generator would take a lot of the tedium out of a sys admin job. Part of your responsibilities would be to make sure the generator stayed fresh, and disposing efficiently of the previous number generating pint

NEUROTICISM
0-20 percentile - Princess Leia -- A confident & calm individual who does not crack under pressure (e.g.,. when being threatened by Lord Vader). She is brave and relaxed, even when in great danger (e.g., when disguising herself as a bounty hunter to gain access to Jabba the Hutt's palace).
21-40 percentile - R2-D2 -- A brave droid, who remains calm, confident and unperturbed even during the most dangerous of missions.
41-60 percentile - Chewbacca -- This wookie belongs in the middle of Neuroticism because on one hand he is a strong and fearless individual but on the other hand he is excitable and easily upset (as shown by his reaction before C-3PO suggested R2-D2 "let the wookie win").

This would have to be the best plan I've ever seen to find out what the average geek and his friends think about themselves. Provided the majority of us were honest in our a/s/l stats, however runs that page now has a breakdown by ethnicity, age, sex, and location how geeks, and slashdotters in particular, look at themselves. I can just see the Microsoft headlines now. "The group of people who like to think of themselves as an honest, giving, opensource community are %50 young males with the friendliness of Boba Fett or Emperor Palpatine"
