Does anyone else get the feeling that the Slashdot userbase is more conservative than the rest of the population? Bush's approval rating hovers around 35%, but the number of uprated pro-Bush comments on recent political posts is astonishing. Apparently, intelligence and critical thinking don't go hand in hand. Economics is always debatable, but how does any thinking person look at the Bush foreign or social policy and see anything but corruption, insanity, and abject failure?
No, it's not. There's a very good reason that live music sharing sites specifically tell you to cut out any "house music" from your recordings before sharing them. The venue may have the right to play some music before the show, but you don't have the right to record and distribute it.
You are, as the GP indicates, talking out your ass and using "fair use" as a silver bullet, when in reality it covers only a narrow range of cases.
I think Oblivion definitely should get the nod because you can do virtually anything in that game...and I do mean anything. My roommate stole a horse...[snip idiotic story] Elder Scrolls Oblivion -- not only is it the best RPG, but also is one of the best games ever. Oblivion has made the biggest quantam leap ever for an RPG. There has never been such a significant advance in gaming in one game. End of story.
Good job of aggregating hyperbolic praise of a game that represents, if anything, a step backwards from Daggerfall in terms of gameplay. Oblivion is fun, sure, and the myriad linear, lead-you-by-the-nose quests are highly polished, but there's no way in the world it deserves to be put on such a lofty pedestal. I haven't seen such a gap between the squealing reviews and the game itself since Half-Life 2.
Are you honestly that stupid? The quote is entirely correct. If they already bought the 320x240 video, then later purchased the 640x480 one, they just paid Apple for an upsampling (ie, nothing). Again, read the fucking summary.
I was wondering when someone was going to get to the Sorkin reference. Studio 60 has been very good so far, though Bradley Whitford hasn't quite gotten out of Josh Lyman mode.
Honestly the best torrent sites are the semi-private ones.
Agreed. But I still hate the ultra-private, invite-only ones that make you jump through hoops to join. Are they that desperate to keep out leechers, or is there some other reason? I've ended up using Demonoid almost exclusively when I want to share something (I uploaded nearly 500GB in 8 months), because they're semi-public.
Read anything Bush or Alberto Gonzales has said on the subject of FISA. Bush's statements were along the lines of "We didn't like the FISA requirements, so we ignored them." If you know anything about this situation, you know that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (ie, a federal law) requires federal authorities to obtain a warrant from the FISA court before conducting the kinds of surveillance that Bush has admitted took place without a warrant.
They're claiming the Constitutional authority that the President can pretty much do whatever he wants. Someone with legal standing needs to challenge this, you can't just be "prosecuted on it".
If you want to get detailed legal analysis of the NSA program than maybe you should read up on volokh.com.
You're obviously not not paying attention. Even the administration has admitted that Bush violated federal law in the warantless NSA wiretapping. Whether or not he violated the Constitution...well, there are a couple of cases in progress that will hopefully make their way to SCOTUS soon enough.
It happens to all the Daily Show correspondents too, or really anyone doing live comedy. The great thing about Stephen Colbert is that he knows how to turn a screw-up into further comedy. The "Filliam H. Muffman" bit wouldn't have been half as funny if Stephen hadn't cracked up.
The need to make some money is turning the team away from building the best generalized BitTorrent implementation
I have to agree with that. Azureus is my favorite BitTorrent client, but it's the only OSS app I've ever used that has nag screens (granted, they're fairly rare, but still). I'd be very happy if Azureus gets forked by a group of spare-time devs who aren't looking for donations.
Heh. It's a good point. At 192-224kbps, I doubt any music in existence (even special samples designed to produce artifacts) can be ABX'd by a human. Beyond that, you waste space and don't gain the benefits of lossless compression.
I'm no fan of NTFS (ReiserFS, for example, manages to outperform it and stay defragmented), but there will always be uses for "lightweight" filesystems like FAT32 or ext2. They require less overhead if you're only storing a few files, and the code needed to access the filesystem is much simpler. A complex filesystem just isn't necessary to store a few MB of files that are very rarely accessed.

Strangely, some people pronounce "niche" as "nitch" rather than "neesh". Makes me cringe.

My huge university (~30,000 students) recently switched to Firefox as default on all its Windows terminals. It was an encouraging sign to me.

Excellent, thanks. I always middle-click or Ctrl+W to close a tab, so it was nice to turn off all the close widgets.
Hi Bill, I didn't know you posted on Slashdot. Been having fun with the loofah lately?
All a "gaming" laptop really needs is a good graphics card... which he could install himself.
I'll bite. Where can I buy a laptop video card (eg, a GeForce Go) by itself?

Nassau? I agree; I can't imagine living far from a major city for very long. How do you avoid going insane from boredom and never meeting anyone new?

What the hell are you babbling about? It's not a "claim", it's the simple truth that you can observe if you have ever used MySpace.

The results are quite good, but if it can be brought down by Slashdot, it's not very useful.
Oh no! I'm one of those mean horrible people who doesn't like the President and isn't stupid enough to believe everything he says. Sorry.

FISA. Do you really not know this?
Why aren't they being prosecuted on it?

Judging from your total ignorance, I'll pass.

Wow. You've never read a poll or a news article in your life, have you?

Surely you jest. Flash supports a tiny number of platforms compared to wxPython, Tcl/Tk, or even Java. Why is it important to run in a browser?
You should write an operating systems textbook. That's the greatest description of non-preemptive vs. preemptive scheduling I've ever heard :)
