    is that debian dies.

    every single person I know who uses debian is so religiously pro-debian that they refuse to accept the existance of anything else.

    They also are all complete fuckwits, stuck up arrogant wankers, and think they know more than they actually do.

    And debian has a habit of doing software updates automatically for the users by default, thus stopping people how to do software updates on their own.

    the whole heart of linux comes from hackers who love to futz around day and night trying to get software working.

    debian has brought fuckwits into the scene who don't know anything about the systems their administering.

    When will they start realising that it's more useful to a global audience to put a month or a quarter?

    How does everyone else feel about this? Being based in the States, you don't notice these little things, but it's frustrating for the rest of us.

    try using some 3D software and tell me that one button is enough. I have a powerbook and have a 2 button mouse with scroll wheel. I couldn't live without it. it's not a necessity, but it's a luxury. in this day and age, if you can't get yourself accustomed to some luxuries, then what's the point of living?

    acorn archimedes computers have always had 3 buttons. and in all their documentation and instruction books/tapes, they name them all.

    left = select
    middle = modify I think
    right = menu

    I can't remember the name of the middle button (it's been so long since I've used one), but it has a distinct function that the acorn style guidesa ll said had to be adhered to, thus giving users a consistant environment.

    THAT is the key. a consistant environment. if you have multiple buttons that do different things in different apps, that is what frustrates users.

    macs have traditionally had one button, and their users know it.

    PCs have traditionally had 2 buttons and their users know what they both do.

    acorns, as mentioned have 3, the functions being standard.

    for good or for worse, each 3 systems have different standards, but they are standard. the users know what they can and can't do.

    extras are extras as you say, but every OS uses mouse buttons in combination with keys.. ie, the difference between moving and copying files in OS X and windows, is dependant on whether you're hold down control, or option, or whatever.

    at the OS level, the 1, 2 and 3 buttons are standard.

    of course, applications that deviate from this are the evil in software.

    I don't know about you, but that's not valuing academic freedom. They do things for money. nothing else. I reckon it's more likely that all their lawyers are already tied up at the moment and they can't be bothered taking the effort to hire one to attack someone they can't sue for money.

    because it will confuse the majority of non-technical users. one of the points in the article was that StarOffice isn't considered one of the more popular productivity suites. but I think that the way these facts are gathered is flawed. Microsoft will always sell more copies of MS Office than anyone else. Look at all the major companies with thousands and thousands of staff who have been using MS Office since day dot. Then look at the costs of retraining these people. Even though the basics of each suite is the same, it's the fact that most people don't like change. Also, the cost of installing to thousands of PCs may pale in comparison to updating MS Office every 3 months when MS change their license terms or for security patches which come out all the time, but it's comfortable. And although there is a high level of compatibility, you can't avoid the fact that even if your company changes, someone else you interact with on a daily basis will be using the very latest version of MS Office and when they send you that nice proposal, all the tables will be naffed, the gfx will all be slightly misaligned... to save headaches, people just accept MS Office. Back to the vendors shipping it out, most users will just get confused and the vendors will get the support calls because they are the ones that bundled SO or OO. too many headaches for everyone. unless there's an International Day Of Unrest where everybody at once uninstalls MSO and installs a competitors product, I doubt the numbers of installed bases will change much. personally I can't wait for SO for OS-X. I'm using ThinkFree which is a bit slow for my liking. Load times and screen refresh times are hideous.. maybe my 550MHz G4 doesn't quite cut it.. but I have lots of RAM. SO can't be worse :)

    but we have the ever so slight problem of apps. it'll be another UNIX with a nice GUI. granted this isn't a bad thing - but it'll certainly hurt companies like redhat in the long run - as linux/unix users worldwide are pining for a better GUI.

    I must say that I recently dumped the intel world and bought a powerbook, and it's the nicest damn machine, with the nicest GUI I've ever used. I think that Risc-OS is a close second, but those days are gone :)

    If aqua does get ported to intel architecture, and can be used with another UNIX other than Darwin, that would be pretty cool.

    X could do with a revamp for the single user world. :) but when it comes down to it, I doubt Apple would dump Motorola/IBM. It's just too big a change. Apple are having enough trouble getting their old users to dump OS9. Dumping the whole machine for new hardware seems unlikely to the point of it being literal suicide for apple. the number of intel people out there who would PAY for OS-X are minimal.
