    for me but in the early 80's when the IBM PC first hit the market, I was a tech and was doing a LOT of soldering. Of course I had been soldering for 15 years prior to that but in the 80's I did a lot of intense, close up PCB work. I usually had a PCB within 4 inches of my eyes or less.

    Now I'm 44 and I can't read a piece of paper that's closer than 12" from my eyes but I can clearly see the string on a balloon 100 yards away and count the telephone wires on poles a 1/4 mile away.

    I have to use wally world reading glasses to do my hardware work now. I also keep a clip-on loupe at hand for the smaller stuff.
    I'm also in the market for an electron microscope, I see them being dumped on ebay CHEAP but I want to trade or barter for one.

    I don't really need the EM but I just want one. Why now??

    Ah, but this clunker is running IBM DOS 3.1 on an 8088.. I'm going to have to dig WAY back to find some sort of driver for that..

    I've got a handful or two of ISA ethernet cards but they are 16bit type. I don't recall having ever seen an 8 bit ethernet card. I'm sure there may be one around somewhere but finding it AND it's drivers....

    Then on the other hand, come to think of it, I could setup an old fashioned BBS on by big PC to run through the com port and use a null modem cable to connect and download stuff that way.

    The other alternative is to put a 5 1/4" fdd in one of my other machines to write disks for the IBM..

    I think the null modem cable will be the easiest by far... Man, it's been a LONG time since I did that kind of stuff, back to the PCBOARD and RBBS days.. Actually, the very first BBS I ran was Colorama on a Rat Shack CoCo at 150baud waaaaaaaaaaaay back.....

    I recycle old computers. My house overfloweth, my garage overfloweth, my warehouse overfloweth, my dad's garage overfloweth, etc..
    You would not believe some of the Dino's I have. Some of the best stuff of "the glory days".
    I have a genuine IBM XT 5160 with 640k, 10m "hardcard" and IBM color display. I keep it to play **OLD** Sierra games.

    I really want to put it on my lan somehow so I can download games on demand from my big machines because of space on the 10m..

    I've got other Dino's too. A few years ago I finally scrapped out my Burroughs B700 and my B730 mainframes. They had dual 15" removable hard disks of a whopping 5 megabytes each!
    I fired up the B730 and my neighborhood went brown out just before my old time screw-in fuse box burst into flames... So much for that.
    I gave all the cards to my dad so he could miser the gold out of them.

    Seriously, it's SCARY the stuff that I have. If you want to walk through the past, my house is the place.

    I pickup old computers and refurbish and repair them. Very few are not repairable.

    I can install Damn Small Linux on even the oldest clunkers and turn them into usable internet terminals for people that don't want to or can't spend much money on a computer. We're talking cheap... (and to the smart-alecs that visit my website just to beat me up, ignore the prices, they are NOT valid, MOST of the stuff I get in I GIVE AWAY FOR FREE to my son's church.....)

    Anyway, don't throw old computers away, fix them up and have some fun. I could crap when I see people gut out old computers and electronics and replace the insides with modern stuff. I was aghast when I saw what some moron had done to one of those cool ass old Predicta TV's a few months ago.

    If you just can't stand looking at it anymore, send it to me but for god's sake, DON'T TRASH IT!

    We know there are losses. We believe we're losing $3.5 billion yearly. Someone sneaks into a theater with a camcorder, films a movie, puts it online for the world to see for free, and it gets duplicated into DVDs that are getting sold on street corners from New York and Los Angeles to China. If this is allowed to continue, it will sink our industry.

    I guess this numbnuts has never seen a camcorder copy of a movie. Absolute CRAP.
    Like everyone will start downloading crappy camcorder copies, so no one shows up at the theaters any more except the camcorder pirates.

    This moron is smoking the same batch of crack that Daryl is smoking..

    BTW, *cough* most people *cough* watch movies from the net to decide if they want to BUY an original or not. No one wants to go spend $20 on a non-returnable item just to find out that it SUCKS, as most movies do now.

    Also there is the OOP stuff. Some of the oddball and oldies just aren't available anywhere else.

    These people aren't losing a damn thing. Go look at the movies for sale section in Wally world. If they weren't selling them they wouldn't stock them.

    The movies section gets a LOT more retail floor space than the audio section does....

    Yes, as a matter of fact. Several of my family members died as a direct result of smoking.
    They died horrible, painful deaths.
    Cancer, heart attacks, etc..
    I watched them die, at their sides in the hospital, I watched them die.
    The tobacco farmers are responsible, the tobacco companies are responsible, the UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT is responsible.
    Yes, the government makes a HUGE profit from the sale of tobacco, it's called sales tax.
    The more sales, the more revenue.
    ATF.. Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. They are the ones that control the sales of tobacco..

    There's so much more..

    Tobacco is a poison. It kills people.
    You can not deny that. If you do, you are a fool...

    Oh and I see some of these posts are getting modded as flamebait. I presume by militant smokers..

    Oh, I'll be the first one to say that quitting was total hell.

    I had never tried to quit before I did quit.
    The first time I tried to quit, I quit.
    I know people that constantly say, "I'm trying to quit" as they puff on one.

    Right.

    I used the patches to help me quit, and for about a year I was miserable. It was hell.
    I replaced cigarettes with soda waters. Everytime I felt the urge, which was about every ten minutes, I drank a soda water instead.
    I went from 147lbs to 210lbs in one year. I'm still trying to knock that down. I'm disabled, having a broken back made it impossible for me to exercise to loose the weight, now I'm recovering from back surgery and still I can't exercise, yet. But I did manage to get down to around 190lbs. I still have about 20lbs to go before I am satisfied.

    Smoking was the worst thing I ever took up, quitting was the hardest thing I ever did. But I have no regrets for quitting, it was the best thing I ever did.

    I hate people that smoke that think they have the right to make me inhale their poison along with them or have to smell their stench.

    And to another poster, I've complained to the stores about the butts everywhere, they moved the ashtrays away from the door and the smokers just threw them on the ground, they move them closer to the door and a FEW will put them in the ashtrays but MOST still throw them on the ground.

    And people drive down the road and flip them out the windows into my yard. How considerate of them, eh? Real nice of you to make a disabled man in a full torso cast that can not bend over, have to get on his knees and pick up their stinking, filthy, ugly cigarette butts from his yard. You can't imagine how difficult and painful it is to drop to your knees and get back up again when you're completely immobilized in a medevil torture device...

    Oh, and thanks a lot, all you smokers, I appreciate all the unnecessary pain and trouble you put me through as I try to keep my yard looking decent...

    Am I an asshole about smoking? You bet I am..
    And proud of it...

    People that smoke, STINK..
    I smoked 3 packs a day, full tilt, until the day I quit, Dec. 26, 1998..

    I smoked from the time I was 14 until I quit at 37.

    So, I'm fully qualified to BITCH at people about smoking.

    Nicotine is a poison. They used to (and may still) put it in Black Flag roach poison.
    Look it up if you don't believe me.

    And the stench is unbearable. I have several friends that smoke and when they bring their computers over for me to work on I have to leave them plugged in and running in my garage for at least two days to get the stench out of them before bringing them inside. ALL of their stuff is PISS yellow, keyboards, mice, monitors all gunked up and sticky.
    Yuck!..

    One guy just brought me his computer because the power supply burned out. Why? Smoke. The nicotine gunked up the cooling fan in the power supply so badly that it quit spinning and the power supply burned up. He's lucky, wait until the fan on his CPU does the same thing.

    The inside of his computer is DISGUSTINGLY filthy. I hate to even touch it it's so nasty.

    And when I go to any of my smoking friends houses, I have to take my clothes of in the garage and drop them straight into the washer or they will make my house stink. I have to take a shower right away after I get home, it makes my hair stink, everything. And that's just from being in the house where they smoke, and they don't smoke while I'm there!

    When they pull out some cigarettes I tell them "Oh, time for a suicide stink stick eh?"

    And for those that dip or chew tobacco, ever seen someone with mouth cancer? It's enough to make you vomit. The sight is worse than anything you would see in a horror movie.

    I hate going to the store where people throw their stinking butts on the ground, the entrance at the stores stink, it's like walking through a gas chamber just trying to get into the store..

    I think they should make tobacco totally illegal, the use, sale, growth, purchase, etc.. Get caught using tobacco, go to jail, felony, 1 year 1st offense.
    Get caught selling tobacco, charge, attempted murder, penalty, DEATH. 1st offense..

    Agreed, for the most part. It IS a pain for newbies to figure out.
    Considering that Suse does NOT include mplayer.
    Suse people have to go out and find it themselves and make it work. It ships with Mandrake (yuk) and probably just about every other distro but Suse chooses to not support and not supply mplayer.

    For a newbie, they have no clue what apt-get, synaptic, packman, guru are.. These names, places, things mean nothing to them.

    One thing everyone has to agree on, Linux people are brutal when it comes to helping newbies.
    A typical newbie question.

    Newbie: "Help! I can't watch a DVD movie on my new Linux computer, what do I do?"

    Linux veteran: "RTFM! RTFM! God damn man, apt-get install mplayer-suite ! What's so friggin hard about that! God damn newbies....."

    Really. Browse any number of the usenet groups or any of the many Linux forums.. You'll see it.
    They have they attitude of "I figured it out by myself, let them figure it out too"

    They play the "Tough Love" method. They believe that if they make the newbie learn it the hard way the newbie will learn the lesson better than if they GIVE them a simple, clear, detailed answer/fix.

    Well, playing Sgt. Hardass MAY make for a few stronger troops but it totally drives the casual rubberneckers away. A few of the M$ people may hear all the noise and decide to take a look, they are met with instant hostility, not open arms. Yes, that's it, open source but not open arms..

    So they recoil and continue to put up with the BSODS, spyware, viruses, etc. because it's what they are used to and because of the hostility of the Linux world.

    I'm at 3 years as a full time Linux convert and I still have a LONG way to go. I totally abandoned M$ and converted because I had reached the snapping point, the point of no return.
    People like myself, people already with some tech skills are the most likely converts.
    But Joe Sixpack and Sally Soccer Mon aren't going to be converting anytime soon...

    That's MY observation of the state of affairs of Linux..
