  1. Quality of the Article on Apple's Growing Pains · · Score: 1

I have been a MacBook Pro user since early May. I know many people have had the aformentioned issues, but the numbers they draw seem to be coming from know where. They says "hundreds" of people have complained. I have not seen any statistics. The most vocal people are the ones with problems. They are the ones who stand out the most. They also compare it to the iBook G3 crisis. I don't think that it is anywhere near that level yet. I could be wrong, but again I have seen no hard numbers from anywhere. Also, these are all first generation products. Apple has always had problems with first generation products. I think that everyone is now seeing a chance to sink their teeth into them since they have been so successful as of late and some people are sick of hearing about it or are upset that Apple can't produce something revolutionary every 4 months (some large companies never produce anything revolutionary).

  2. Automarking/Manual and the big negative on Resources for Programming Course TA? · · Score: 2, Informative

I am also a TA for an introductory course to JAVA. I am not sure how many others here are but I have found auto-marking to be essential. I am a single TA and I have 180 students. Each assignment has 3-4 substantial programs. Trying to mark them all by hand would be impossible given time limitations. I do have to agree with others though in that feedback is always nice. Therefore what I have done is I mark half of each assignment and the other half is automarked. I have automarking compare output given input and allocate this to a mark called 'Correctness'. I then mark certain functions (usually the harder ones assuming that if they could do these ones they could do the others). This way the students still get feedback. I also encourage them to come in and see me if they have questions so we could go over it together in more depth. The test cases are also put online (after all assignments are in).

The submission system I use however is unix based. So the first or second tutorial/lab we run is all about how to submit your assignment through unix. We have had a website submission system in the past but we found this negativly affected some students who in third year had yet to touch unix at all.

Just as a warning though, I have found with introductory courses, no matter how many times I tell them to output something in a specific way, the students will not do it. I usually have my automarking scripts do a 'diff' with multiple possible answer or ways of formating an answer. They will still fail all the test cases forcing me to hand mark anyways. I have even given them Strings in provided code to use and they will either change the output, ignore it, or have extra output. Sometimes I just give them 0 in the correctness area. The main reason for this is the students don't care. Some are just in the course because there program requires them to have one CS course.

Therefore, if you plan on doing this then you might want to consider having final results stored in a variable, and have them make a public get method. That way you can simply redirect standard out to something like /dev/null when you run their code to get the final result, and then set it back to the screen and use the get method to output just the result. This only works in the case of computing numbers though.

Anyways, good luck with whatever you decide to do

  3. Safe? on Microsoft Robots to Watch Kids · · Score: 2, Interesting

I don't think this is a good idea. What happens if a kid bumps his head and knocks himself out. I guess the robot could quickly call someone. That's fine. What happens if a kid falls in a swimming pool. If the robot calls someone, by the time they arrive it might be too late where as a human might be able to do something else. Then again if you let your kids play by the pool I think you should ask yourself some questions.

My old elementary school used wordperfect and I have been hooked ever since. I started off with 5.1 and worked my way up with it. Unfortunatly I found that after Version 9.0 it became very unstable. I tried 10 and it would crash at random some times on windows XP. I recently just purchased version 11 hoping it will not crash anymore and I also thought it would be the last word perfect released. Guess I was wrong. Im glad they are still releasing as they make one of the best word processors on the market and not to mention the fact that many doctors and lawyers swear by it. Now if only my university would allow me to submit wpp documents instead of word documents!

  8. May not be coding in the book on Errata in Programming Books? · · Score: 2, Informative

Personally I have come across few typing errors in books (then again I RARELY try any of the code they offer in books). I personally have several PHP books and if you are just starting to learn PHP please be aware that the language goes through like 4 updates a month or something like that. I remember when I first tried to learn PHP I attempted some of the code and it would not work. This was because from the time the book was published to the time I got it the PHP language had changed. Some of the defaults were changed etc... so things did not work the way i intended them to (changing it so all variables were not global by default drove me nuts until I firgured out what was wrong).

Basically the point I am trying to make is that with PHP some times the problem may not be with errors in the code, but may be with the fact that the language has changed and no longer supports what you are trying to do... Having saying this if you cannot get a "Hello World" Program to work then I would be a bit suspicious as to whats wrong.

  10. I disagree Unfortunately on Why Nerds Are Unpopular · · Score: 1

Unfortunately I have to strongly disagree with this article. Let me start of by saying I am Canadian and not American and thus do not know if Canadian High Schools act any differently from American besides the grading systems. I would think they act very similar as a large part (but not all) of our culture is the same. Let me start of by saying that in my High School based upon his leveling of A-E I would be considered a C, but that scale barely exists in my school. Though many people do still go to their "groups" such as football players hanging out with other football player, intelligent people or "nerds" as he CRUDELY puts it hanging out with the other intelligent people, but it is not a shock to see intelligent people hanging out with football players and vice versa. I myself achieve marks in the high 80's to low 90's and yet on of my good friends is VERY athletic, dead opposite of me, big into football and wrestling. That aside I also do have friends who are more intelligent, but I share a mixture. So do many other people throughout my school as this can be seen just by looking down the halls. This is also seen in other high schools I have been to. I am not saying this true for all people however (one person I consider to be in the A section I would never be friends with, but that a whole different matter), but from my prospective it seems that majority of the people have friends from all areas of the scale. To me the article itself seems dated (which the author admits could be true) as I have heard tales of things as someone being shoved in a locker, but most of its in the past. I will not deny that it still happens (more as jokes), but real; lets face it; bullying does occur, but it does not seem to be as regular. In this day and age intelligent students seem to be more respected and often aid in the football stars or cheerleader if needed. Many of the football players or cheerleaders themselves may actually be of the more intelligent level. The one thing I will admit that still seems to be a problem is appearance. Not really so much clothing wise, but physically. This problem however seems to come, sad to say as I am male, more from the male side and even them more from the unintelligent or drugged up ones. Females seem to not so much mind physically appear as much anymore especially entering senior years (not say this is all true). This physically appearance problem I have also noted is becoming less and less common among the males as they mature (remember males are about 2 years behind females in majority). I could also not agree with his outlook upon the future in the workplace where he says that the reason this does not exist any longer is because minorities ban together etc.. I believe that it is because we have all matured to a point where we see the need for those intelligent people or where in the university and collage years we grow up to become those smart people. The smart people themselves also learn to stand up for themselves (not always true). These are just some possibilities. The only thing in the article I agreed with really is that school is like a prison. I don't like the idea of doing this mindlessly over and over again never knowing what we will be doing and how we, the people being educated are given little say in our own education until later years of high school, but fortunately over the past 2-3 year, in Ontario anyway this has GREATLY changed and we are not doing real-life problems and see where and why things are done. To quote a teacher on the new system "finally we are out of the routine and into the creativity". I also have a few other points of disagreement but I have forgotten em..Cya and remember this information is what I have observed in a Canadian City and Canadian High Schools and may not be true everywhere, but I think it might be more true then the article, especially since its more present then past.
