it's easy for someone to drastically reduce prices when they don't have to pay for the material
So are you saying that if allofmp3 paid the appropriate costs in Russia to legally copy a song, that then it would be okay? Well, news for you, that is what they are doing. Russian law allows them to make these copies on a per-copy fee. I believe it is around 5 cents per song. So they are able to sell for to consumers for far less than US companies. The russian economy and culture is a lot different than ours. Why is that so difficult for everyone to understand?
Dude, Google for it yourself or check out one of the numerous links that have been posted throughout this discussion. Also, you need to understand that media is licensed differently in other countries than it is in the US. What does artists getting compensated have to do with legality? Heck, there is no requirement that artists get compensated in the US!
There are a lot of mp3 players out there. I think it is kinda short sighted to declare the iPod the best without out doing significant research. Ecspecially considering that they all do basically the same things but differ mostly in human interface. I know in my search for a digital music player, I found that iPod is one of the worst from a value perspective.
Can any website guarantee you legitimacy in whatever country you live in? Can ITunes guarantee that Nigeria will not make downloading some music illegal?
These valves are not the only source of depressurization. It is not necessarily true that they were the sources of depressurization on these flights. If you punch a hole in the aircraft, there is nothing that these valves can do to help you.
A smart autopilot that responds when it thinks the pilot is incapacitated? Not a bad idea. Would require a lot more complexity to be added to the system however as you have to account for new problems that could arise from this change.

You cannot prevent all failures. But safety critical systems need redundant and if possible simple designs to prevent catastrophic failures.
The problem is that there is no redundancy in the system. You can never guarantee that a system is 100% failsafe and in safety critical systems you counter this by adding redundancy into the system. Why else would Boeing put triple redundancy in cabin pressurization valves for their aircraft? They do not like spending extra money or adding weight anymore than Airbus. It will of course come back to haunt Airbus if this gets more publicity.
Okay, but in this type of protein research you assume that humans, monkeys, cows, fish, and bacteria share a common ancestor, not merely looking at how a single species changes over time. Creationists usually draw the line when you say that we share a common ancestor with chimps.
Creationists also like to argue that no true value comes out of studying evolution and that it is proven to be false and ignore the fact that the basic principles of evolution play an enormous role in helping us further understand biochemistry and molecular biology.
Does Xandros give users root privs by default or something? Just curious, because I am pretty sure that this virus would have been ineffective against my default Suse install.
How could they control this market? There are few if any barriers to prevent others from participating. If this is validated as legal then I guarantee that there will be more participants.
The authors want to be consulted on how their copyrighted text is used
Too bad, copyright does not give you the right to specify only certain types of usage. Maybe they should sell their books with a shrinkwrapped license.;)
Libraries have been indexing books by author name, title, and subject for ages. They have never had to pay for this privilege. Indexing the contents of the book merely takes this to the next level and offers a capability that we have not had before. Search engines do not have to pay to index websites and I believe this has been tested in court. Without Google this search capability would not exist, they deserve 100% of the profits. Nothing prevented the Authors guild from creating a similar service.
As an aside, how do you plan to get all of the authors in the world together to agree with google on an appropriate model for dividing up the add revenue? How much does each author hope to gain when this is all divided up? $0.05?
Wow. Thanks for the info. I know now that I will never consider using Mono. I cannot understand why a company like Novell would put themselves at so much risk for something like.NET compatibility.
Then why use OpenDoc format at all? OpenDoc and OpenOffice Writer are intended to create WYSIWYG printed documents. If you want dynamic electronic documents or forms, it does not make sense to constrain yourself to a traditional word processor. Webpages are much better for dynamic and electronic content. For those with experience in E-books, I think that most would agree that an xml scheme like DocBook is a better solution.
You call him ignorant and naive but you are the one expecting everyone else in the world to respect you copyrights. Making money by controlling distribution of copyrighted material may not be an outdated business mode yet, but it will be eventually.
Most of our culture like our music is produced in the private domain. It used to be that this work would be in the public domain after a small amount of time. In the current system copyright is being extended at such a rate that nothing will ever again be in the public domain. Lessig here is arguing, as he has in the past, that it is important that societies eventually own their culture. With the current mindset that the public should never own creative works, this will not happen. Imagine a world where the widely reproduced creative works from the Renassaince had to be licensed.
Most of our tax revenue comes from personal income taxes. I have no problem with this but the myth that Corps pay most taxes needs to be put to rest.
The US funded the research which "invented" the protocols necessary for the internet to work. The internet is a protocol. Nothing more.
I stand corrected.

It is not licensed. This is not software. You do not know what you are talking about.

Well, that would be obvious copyright infringement, but that is not what is happening.

They only provide excerpts of the book, not complete copies.

I thought you were talking about REAL consequences, like the government forcing you to pay someone for something that you said or wrote.
