I do not have a major beef with companies that do not consider it an obligation to save the world. However, I find it offensive that Google wears their ethics on their sleeve, yet does not live up to the same social responsiblility standards of many companies that do not engage in such shameless self-promotion. The "Do No Evil" slogan is a gimmick that Google found to be beneficial after a decade in which corporate crime was rampant. It is a fantatic con. Their are hardly any values outlined in their code of conduct that actually define what they would consider "evil".
Any company can rationalize something being ethical and in support of their users, even the Slashdot/Google enemy, Microsoft.
Anybody being fooled by the "Do No Evil" is simply gullible. I challenge you to read the Google Code of Conduct and compare that to the code of conduct of a company like Chiquita. You will see that there is really no comparison.
Well, you have hit the nail on the head. A lot of users are concerned about privacy, which is really not what this is about. The desired information can be turned over without disclosing personal information. I think Google's perspective on this is that they are not involved in this case and therefore should not be subpoenaed to provide research data at no cost. Personally, I think they are 100% correct in this. If you allow this, then the door is opened for lawyers to subpoena any source or expert for any case. Since search engines are such a good source of information for gathering statistics on what people search for, the court system could put a very large burden on their business.
Google is going to win this, because they are right. There are a large number of subject matter experts in the world that are paid to give their opinions on things like accident investigations. If the White House wants research and information, then they should contract with a company that can supply them this research and information.
You analogy is only accurate in that it compares the oppurtunity cost of two choices. The actual choices themselves are not comparable to the choices we have made in invading Iraq.
Bush has sold Iraq primarily on the grounds that it makes America safer, not that it helps Iraqis. I am making the points that common sense dictates that there are better strategies to make Americans safer for far less cost. If you want to argue that the cost is worth it because it is our obligation to help others around the world then I would argue in turn that we get far more bang for our buck by aiding Africa and other poor countries in their fight against HIV.
I partially agree that he has done the things you stated, but I would argue that doing all of these things takes vast resources away from more important things. Common sense tells you that our response to 9/11 is over blown. A few thousand deaths is not that large in the grand scheme of things. If we are interested in saving lives we should have focused on treating heart disease or preventing traffic accidents.
Well, so far we only have an ALLEGATION that the length=1 exploit is present in Windows 2000. All versions of Windows and Wine have a WMF flaw, but this is the only case in which it has been shown that there is a trigger for this exploit. We know for a fact that the Wine flaw is truely a flaw. It is different because it does not look for a trigger.

Well, I just checked distro watch and FreeBSD runs KDE 3.4+ and Gnome 2.10+ so I do not know how much improvement you expect to gain by switching. I assure you, it will not be much. It will probably be slower. If you want a lighter desktop you just need to sacrafice some of the bells and whistles that come with the more advanced desktops and switch to lighter weight alternatives.
The grandparent listed devices that have the ability to read/write in FAT filesystem. They contain the necessary algorithms to do this. They are the devices that have to pay royalties. Memory devices like flash keys do not have this ability to read/write to any particular filesystem.
If you run the same programs on a BSD system, your computer is not going to magically become faster. By most accounts that I have seen, Linux tends to be faster than BSD.
Also, I just checked the Gentoo website, they still have an install CD that is under 60 MB, so I know for a fact that the distribution can still be made small and light.
I would say that the portage system pulls in Python for a very particular reason... It is written in Python. Python is also easy to learn so it makes it easy to be a package manager, which means Gentoo will have lots of packages available.
Valid point, but define unruly behavior. That is the problem with this law. It is so loosely defined that it can be used to inhibit free speach. If it could be defined in a reasonable (in the case of phones and blogs) way to seperate harassment from free speach then this might be a reasonable law.
My second problem with this law is the very nature of how it differs from a crank call. If I call you at your home, I initiated the contact and there is little you could do to prevent from being harassed. In the case of blogs, forums, or slashdot, Both users willingly participate in the online discussion, so both have the option of simply not visiting that website in the future if they feel annoyed by the other user.
As punishment for the Sony Rootkit, all Sony Media employees and employees responsible for creating the rootkit should have speed monitoring devices attached to all of their vehicles. If they speed, they get mailed a ticket. They can also have all thier phone and email conversations recorded and available on the internet to the public. If they are in such a hurry to live in an Orwellian society, I say, let them have a little taste of it.
Since we do not have any evidence regarding the subjects of the spy activities, we cannot assume that it was being used in the fight on terrorism because it could have been used against political opponents the way the J. Edgar Hoover used intelligence resources. In short, what was special about these 30 some investigations that they had to be treated differently than the thousands of other investigations that FISA has approved in the past.
Is you serious or is this just extremely subtle sarcasm? I hope sarcasm, because true Republicans do not support a secret govt branch that operates without check and spies on US citizens. That is why so many powerful republicans are speaking out against the executive branch's actions.
Your comparing addiction to dangerous chemicals to entertainment media. I think they are on two completely different levels in terms of danger to a person. If a video game can make someone delusional then the same could be said for TV, music, or a book which have all been criticized in the past under similar circumstances.
Even with 6 to 9 months of training I have my doubts if Suzy can use Access. Truth is there is only one database app that some people can wrap their brains around and that is the common spreadsheet.

Yes, because all we are doing to monitor the temperature is just take it once a year at a random time and random location... Genius.

I have had no reliability problems in using FAT32 for shared partitions.

But what about are moral responsibility to keep our rivers clean?

With such a loose definition of "terrorism" I think we could all then be considered terrorists at some point.

I am sure most slashdotters own stock. And accept the fact that not all slashdotters are of the same opinion. You are also a slashdotter.

Not as simple as buying a case already made.
