  2. Troubleshooting, and then solving the problem based on having a set of tools, defined parts/pieces, and desired outcomes. Analyze existing systems and figure out how they could be working.

    At some point, your tool could be an if-then statement, your parts a few variables, and the outcome some bit of code gets executed.

    A duct tape and bailing wire DIY shouldn't be too hard. Tricky part will be a smooth consistent niceness.

    Quick google shows X10 to be alive and well, with RF or wired access to the devices. A webserver-with-API-to-X10-controller bridge device shouldn't be too hard to do with a Pi or similar acting as the bridge hardware, so that can get you on your local network - a quick google shows you should check the Pi and a project called Heyu. Rent a Linode or similar VPS for internet based control if you can't get a static method of addressing your home network when you are away or if your service provider blocks the ports you want to use

    Why is it that people who are provided accounts by their employer/organization insist on using "free" services ? I can't imagine NOT using my work provided address for work stuff, and whatever personal address I use on whatever provider for personal stuff...

  6. Indeed. DUI is victim-less. Until an accident is caused. Then I guess it could be assault with a deadly weapon (what you'd get charge with if you tried to run over a cop with your car, and what they'd use as an excuse to start shooting at you). And if someone dies as a result of the accident, then some level of murder, even possibly premeditated (since you knew you were gonna get drunk/stoned/high and drive and the potential outcome)

    And if you are on the absolute edge of a run like I am, 1.5mb down works but 3mb down has too much noise and can't keep a connection for more than 10 minutes without resetting the "modem"

    Indeed. And just how enforceable are the terms of service for a service like this? IE, if the terms include "using your real business name" - ie, allow folks who are DBA'ing as Foo Corp to use Foo Corp even though ti is really an individual - and "not reselling or allowing access by others" - so Foo Corp can't allow his drinking buddy Bar Corp to use his account "to check on something" - woudl that be enough to prevent the feds from using a corporation, etc? Because the service can certainly say "oh, we won't sell an account/access to any government agency" - after all, that isn't discrimination based on race, religion, etc.

    There may be legal issues with redistributing, since Mint isn't as hard core "Gotta Be Free" as the Stallman crowd would like... so to cover the main distributor's butts ship disks etc without the codecs and prompt for install during the install process.

    Sucks for the small percentage that only run from CD and don't have persistence set up

    IIRC when it recognizes a face (or a face like shape) it offers users to tag that person, and I think the tag has to be of an existing facebook user, possibly in your friends or friends-of-friends...

    But my immediate thought is "what would it take to poison the data". IE, if you can tag your friends, and you have a large enough group of 'em, could you repeatedly tag similar photos (of say, yourself) with different names enough to "muddy the print" ?

    For the little that I need to do with it Office 365 seems to work great on my Mint desktop wtih the Chromium browser.... as usual, your experience may vary

    One (dedicated and heavily firewalled) machine for the CAD/CAM/wahtever special tool, one for desktop use. Relatively easy, relatively cheap. Treat those super specialized applications as an "appliance" instead of a software package on a desktop machine...

    Non-story? Maybe. Depends on whatever license he clicked thru, any changes made to that license agreement (one way only - from Apple - you can't change your end willy-nilly), and if clickwrap licenses/contracts are legal.

    Otherwise it would seem on the surface that there maybe a copyright violation, when Apple copied his stuff (original compositions and recordings) from his machine to their machine ...

  16. Check your local National Forrest. The two closest to me - Osceola and Ocala - both have open to the public no use fee ranges. The Osceola one (Lake City, Fl - Lewis D Whittaker Range) is nicer and has a higher class of user. I've seen and heard of some rather scary situations at the Ocala range ... these ranges are funded in part by the Pittman Robertson Act, which is an excise tax on guns, ammo, some archery and camping equipment.

  17. Been using the online version of Turbo Tax for 6 or 7 years from my Linux machines, first with Firefox and then the past 2 years with Chromium. No issues at all, even though TT alerts me to the fact that they haven't tested my particular OS/Browser combination

    Linode has plenty of bandwidth ... so you set your 'node up as a reverse caching proxy that pulls content as it is requested from the Datto storage

    OK sure. But I can see a new Linux distribution using something like this in addition to a VPS like Linode provides to host their repository.

    $10/mo for a webserver with plenty of bandwidth, another $10/mo for a TB of storage...

    Maybe something like a points race? Assign a point value for 1st thru 10th place, ask the Teeming Millions (sorry Cecil!) to make a list of their top 10 or top 20, perhaps out of a pre-defined list of 100 titles (made from the 3 lists/databases you mention), then calculate point totals for each title. This way in theory a title that consistently gets 2nd or 3rd place on a majority of lists is "better" than a title that has some 1st place mentions but doesn't even make it onto some peoples lists. See the "points race" system that NASCAR uses...

    Of course, then you have the problem of identifying a top series - ie, it may have a stinker or two of a book, but on the whole the series itself is excellent...

    The Democrat and Republican parties have too much influence on our political process. I agree with you, they should be a self-funded private organization.

    However, the point of a primary is for the Party to decide who will represent it in the real election. As a private institution, I don't care how they do it. Of course, if I were a member of a party I may care, but then it is "my" club and there should probably be an internal process for deciding who gets on the primary ballots.

    Maybe instead of focusing on dollar amounts, they should focus on the ratio of tickets available (seats in theatre * showings/day * days) to the number of tickets sold. After all, with ticket prices the way they are now there is no comparing a movie from the 70s - lets say Star Wars on opening weekend at a whopping 1.5 million, essentially petty cash in todays numbers - to anything released today. Oh, but the first SW movie was unknown - but Empire Strikes Back grossed a big $4.9 million on its opening weekend... still pocket change compared to The Force Awakens with $247.9 million on its opening weekend.... numbers pulled from http://www.the-numbers.com/mov...

    Indeed. But what other technology would be good for something server side to interact with something on the user's local machine via web browser?

    Assuming the security bugaboos can be worked out, I can see this being good for things like authentication
