Linux does great at doing what many people want a desktop or laptop to do. Surf the web, do email, social media, etc. You can easily do your taxes via Turbo Tax (and probably others but I've not used them) in a browser, you can use OpenOffice/LibreOffice to write a paper for school, etc.

Linux lacks in the top tier gaming area, and for some highly specialized applications used in professional work. For games, buy a Wii or X-box or whatever. For those super special applications (AutoCAD, etc) then you really have an "appliance" and not a general purpose computer.

  10. There are cross platform programs that many/most of us use, or programs that have cross platform support for the file formats they use. Long ago I got my Mom on OpenOffice, Firefox, Chrome, Thunderbird and GIMP. I'm a *very* anti-app person - if I can do it from a browser on my desktop/laptop why the hell do I need an app to do it on my phone? - but this doesn't apply to all apps. It certainly doesn't apply to anything that is using the (somewhat unique) hardware in the phone - camera, motion sensor, touch screen sensor, etc

Other than what iOS forced onto my phone, I've added a SSH client, remote control for my TV, and a sound level meter (to see how loud some rimfire ammo is and to compare some suppressors). On my Android tablet (taken over from the wife last week, put cyanogen on it) I've added an epub reader, some wireless sniffing tools to check coverage, and a SSH client (same one I use on my phone, still looking for a great terminal/shell app). Oh, and a financial calculator that I need for an exam I'm going to be taking tomorrow.

Sure my home screens are loaded with icons, but almost all of them are website bookmarks/shortcuts/whatever you want to call 'em when you pick "add to home screen" instead of "add to (internal to the browser) bookmarks"

A buddy who spent 3 years in Afghanistan as a contractor (K9 handler) used 'em and bought a few extra sets for the soldiers he was serving with, very useful for both guard duty and house clearing. His biggest issue was keeping both the plugs and his ear holes clean - as you can imagine any little bit of grit or dirt makes them uncomfortable to wear.

But it is also the same situation hardware manufacturers who don't provide completely open (or do, but don't maintain) code are in regarding Linux kernel code and having a standard ABI to work against. For an example of this look at NVidia proprietary drivers. Early 80s TRS-80 guy here, mine was at an after school activity place that was half arts-n-crafts and have programming on TRS-80s, and you had to alternate. Then Turbo Pascal on my own on a 286, and COBOL and FORTRAN via green-screen terminals to a mainframe at UF while in high school. Then more Turbo Pascal until I got around to working on an AS degree, and it was VB, C, C++, and Java. Then learned some basic Perl and then PHP for stuff at work, and now that I'm working on another degree re-learning C/C++/Java to do some Android and iOS classes.

As for teaching kids today? I taught 2 groups of 10-14 year olds in a two week period some basics during a "college for kids" day camp. Hour and a half per day for 8 days. Some of them (4 or 5 out of the 34) really wanted to learn to code, most others thought it would be all about games, some wanted the class in the coldest room after outside activities and didn't care what was being taught. Thank god for CITs...

Day 1- Define programming, what kind of languages are there (interpreted vs compiled, proceedural vs object oriented). Show an application like a browser and talk about the events that had to be dealt with and what kind of decisions had to be made. Play a game for the last 30 minutes, have 'em pay attention to what kind of things would have to be dealt with...

Day 2- psuedo code on a white board, introduce variables, arrays, logic, looping, functions, and objects. Play game again last 20-30 minutes, have them pick one or two objects and note what properties and methods it may have

Day 3- "Hello World" time. We used PHP (since they were also doing a class on HTML/CSS and creating web pages), and produced a page that said "Hello World, my name is Bob and I was born on a Thursday", using the date() function to print what day of the week they were actually born on. Added some HTML stuff - links, change font sizes, insert images, etc all what they've been doing in the HTML/CSS class. Then more "free time" for games, or to keep exploring with PHP...

Day 4- User input with a form and the $_POST array. This time they were able to prompt for someone's name and DOB and say "Hello you are $name and you were born on a $day_of_week". Talk about validating user input, and how it can lead to hacks, crashes, errors, etc. Show Bobby Tables xkcd. More "free time".

Day 5- Introduce the concepts of connecting to a database as just another function set. Gave them an include file that would provide a function that would execute a query and return the record set as an array. Showed them how record sets could be dealt with, and then game|code time.

Day 6- 30 minutes of cool stuff PHP can do like image manipulation, generating PDFs, etc then game|code

Day 7 & 8- free time to game or code. Game players were all playing same game and it had a CTF mode so I made 'em setup teams and play CTF.

In all, the 4-5 kids that wanted to learn to code or learn about learning to code got a taste, and they all asked for book recommendations. The kids that wanted the gaming or air conditioning got it, and hopefully a little of the concepts from days 1 and 2 sunk in.

I'd even do it again, if I have the time to spare...
