  1. What if the user is already logged-in? on Kerberos 5, LDAP, and Time-of-Day Constraints? · · Score: 1

You realize that even if you do get this working with a pam_time.so type setup that when someone logs in then they can stay connected even during those time they would not be allowed to ssh into a machine as long as they do not log out? That fact alone makes using pam_time.so type configs sort of pointless if that is what you are trying to restrict. Now there are ways around this to force people off of machines after a certain period of time or at specific times, but again do you want to do this and if you do I do not know a way to do this in a centralized manner.

No real time graphics does not require us to sit and look at the screen constantly. For example here at work we have an alarms screen. When something goes out of tolerance we get an alarm, an audible alarm. For example some devices have a klaxon, that will get your attention. Then you look at the alarms screen to see what is going on. Much simpler way of using sound than having a constant tune playing.

Besides, problems in controls often are that when something goes south there is too much information for you to quickly pinpoint which single problem was at the center of the storm. I would imagine using all of the unique aspects of sound to indicate trouble would add to the information overload for an operator.

  6. more silly bank on RIAA Sues Woman Who Has Never Used a Computer · · Score: 2, Interesting

When we bought a house we had an escrow account set-up with the mortgage for paying things such as property taxes and home owners' insurance. Well it turns-out that the banks that do the mortgages often farm out the duty of handling escrow related matters. So the processing company that worked for our bank paid our property taxes for the first year. Unfortunately the company that handled the escrow accounts for another bank also did because someone at their company mis-entered some number in their system. Now the county returned the money once to the company for our bank and once to the company for the unrelated bank. Years later we get a bill for a couple thousand dollars plus.

By that time we no longer had the same bank for our mortgage and both companies that handled the escrow accounts had been absorbed by larger companies. This all was a large pain in the butt to work out. I actually had to pay a lawyer to look over the terms of a settlement between all of the parties in the end.

The worrisome aspect was that the county clerk told me that it is very common for this sort of mix-up to happen. You would think that if that was the fact the county would mail a letter to the homeowner on record if they got two checks for paying the property taxes as a heads-up, but no we don't get that sort of service even though it is our taxes that finance the county.

Those were some rather good guidelines. One part I do not personally like though. You suggested taking the staff out to dinner. I always hate situations like that. I spend enough time at work as it is. I would much rather get home to my family instead when I am done with work.

Now taking the staff out to lunch, that would not conflict with that as much, but it still would not be much of a reward. Hey I would be eating lunch with the same people I do everyday, just probably at a "casual" place that none of us is particularly fond of.

How about as a reward you give a gift certificate to some bland place like Red Lobster. That way someone like me can take his wife and kids there. Even better give half a day of comp time to make up for a smidgen of the extra hours people have out in too.

Also I got many systems at launch with never a problem. The systems that I got at launch were the Colecovision, NES (yes with Robbie and the light gun), and Atari Lynx. My younger brother got the Super Nintendo and N64 at launch also with no problems.

Q: Why do I see Mr. Yuk instead of graphics when I view your pages?

A: Because we've had so many problems with other sites hotlinking to our graphics (thereby using up a large portion of our bandwidth), we've implemented an anti-hotlinking configuration. If any site other than our own attempts to display one of our images, the attempt will fail and a picture of Mr. Yuk (a frowning green face) will be displayed instead.

If you are visiting our site but are seeing pictures of Mr. Yuk in place of our graphics, the most likely causes are that you are going through a proxy server, or you are using a firewall or browser configured in such a way that it does not present valid referrer information to our web server.

I have three kids and I second your opinion. I REALLY enjoy watching Lilo & Stitch with them. We enjoy Monsters Inc too. The the point I am making is that it does not matter HOW the story is animated, but all else being equal, an interesting and fresh story that is not simply a rehash of a 400 year old bedtime story will win-out anytime.

As another example to this, consider how much more my kids like to watch Elmo in Grouchland vs. Cinderelmo. Both are very technically similar movies with a similar mix of singing and puppets, but one of them is not an obvious rehash of Cinderella...

But back to Lilo & Stitch. When I first saw that I was worried that what was being planned was a barrage of trading cards and plastic figurines of the various experiments. Luckily I think this never happened, maybe because the movie did not take off, so it could have been much MUCH worse than simply a cash-cow sequel.

  25. Some reasons I do not like this on Anonymous Library Cards An Option? · · Score: 3, Informative

First of all, the 'value' of the material you check-out should be increased from the purchase price. I regularly use inter library loan to get materials that are next to impossible to find otherwise. If this system was anonymous and the price of CD say was $15, then all of the obscure music would quickly vanish from circulation. You would need to increase the value to say $60 to discourage stealing.

The way that libraries counteract stealing now is that they have a dollar limit above which they do not lend further materials out to you and you can only have one library card per name address pair. So even if the value is comparable to real world cost, the fact that you can only steal a limited amount before you can return to steal more, and the fact that if you steal enough at one time they will put you in collection work well enough to prevent casual theft.

Already at that increased value rate for the card, this would turn-away most people. But say that they did not mark-up the value, just wait until you have three kids like I do. Right now I have some twenty odd books/videos/CDs checked-out from the library near my home. I also have two movies, two books, and 11 CDs that I am returning today to the library near my work. I do not even know how much my wife has checked-out, but she is a pretty voracious reader too. Think about how much money we would need to set aside for that.

So why is this being proposed? It looks like it is a solution to the wrong end of the problem. The real problem are the laws that force libraries to turn-over information. So guess what the solution is? Yes that's right, change those laws.
