  1. you must be new at this.... on Using Debian in Commercial Environments? · · Score: 1

or you'd never suggest migrating a working DB2 and websphere install to an untested, unsupported system.

Its one thing if you have an entire technology group backing you up and helping with any issues; but to take on the task of transferring a working system to something unproven is lunacy.

Besides what software do you want to install ?!?!

a server is a server; as long as it has the software that it needs to do the job what else do you need to install ? and apt-get as nice as it is is not going to get you the latest copy of DB2 or WebSphere.

Note to the mods: how is this an Ask Slashdot question ? Slashdot shouldnt take the place of software support forums or a quick phone call to IBM's tech support...

the way he got it the system was far from perfect to use...

he had to install Windows XP Tablet PC Edition to get it to work the way he wanted.

XP Tablet PC edition is only available to OEM's or MSDN subscribers (which is $2500 a year) so i think the average user may find the system a little frustrating

I work in a visual effects/video production shop as system administrator, so i know firsthand how much data is required to do a simple animated spot/visual effects shot. An average 30 second spot for TV (which is about 1/4th the resolution of film) takes around 200 to 400 GB of data. Our network is all GigE based, with Terabytes of Fibre Channel storage. Even with all the power available to us (Mac G5's and Intel Xeon based rendering systems) it takes forever to pump out the frames for a spot. In short theres no way people can crunch this kind of workload without having to download gigs of information first. With tight project deadline s and tons of protected intellectual property at stake this kind of work is best kept in house. you can check out our web site here

  6. is it really that much better ? on Apple Releases iTunes for Windows · · Score: 1

I used iTunes for quite a while on my Powerbook, but for the most part i kept wishing i had Winamp on my Mac. Winamp 3 proved to be too bloated, in some cases a stripped down minimal player is best... so im back to using winamp 2 on my pc While itunes is a great looking app, it may not be the best choice for everyone
