  1. Re:influential relatives on Chief of eBay's Indian Site Arrested, Released · · Score: 1
    Oh. Come on.

How is getting someone arrested on a trumped up charge going to help the situation even for the families of the 2 individuals?

If they want to sweep it under the carpet then they would keep quiet about it as much as possible instead of practically shouting it from the rooftops by getting a high profile person arrested.

This is just the high-handedness and stupidity of Indian authorities.

BTW there are 2 more possibilities
    1. Some adversary of the CEO wanted to get back at him and used his/her influence to get him arrested.
    2. This is a ploy by Bazee.com to get free publicity !!

  3. hmmmmm.... on Math And The Computer Science Major · · Score: 1

I think this question or point is much more difficult and tricky than it seems at first glance....

First of all I think we have to distinguish between Computer Science (CS) and Information Technology (IT). Long gone are the days when they could be clubbed together. IT is a field of its own. No doubt that the 2 fields overlap often (and the overlap is of varying degrees) but IT has matured enough to be considered separate from CS.

I think math is an essential and invaluble part of CS. You simply cannot be good at CS without being reasonably good at Math. In fact many of the geniuses(/genii) in CS were/are excellent mathematicians in their own right.

Having said that I also believe that an IT professional does need basic knowledge of math but not too much in depth. S/he simply doesn't need it. And in the real world whatever little math is required for IT can be easily picked up on the job. And in domains where IT requires in-depth knowledge of math u usually have 1 or more ppl who are good at math.

But all said and done math also hones ur brain and teaches u to think in a number of ways. And this is a skill that any professional should have. Thus math may help indirectly even though it might not be useful in day-to-day life...

    Thanks

  4. Re:An interesting fact on India Starts All-Electronic National Elections · · Score: 1

    I think u have exaggerated a lot.

True there are a lot of illiterate voters in India but illiterate != dumb. Even people who cannot read and write know the election symbols of the major parties and also the independent candidates. And since a party can field only 1 candidate at the most from a constituency voters merely have to know which party their fav candidate belongs too (generally it is the other way round. ppl vote for parties and NOT for individuals)

There were a number of rumours doing the rounds a few days before the actual elections. Some of them are:

    1) The EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines) are faulty and often give electric shocks
    2) EVMs were infected with viruses
    3) blah blah blah...

However the EC (Election Commission) did a great job of dispelling these rumours. Kudos to them for doing a nice job in very difficult circumstances...

  5. Email is used to send Snailmail.... on E-mail and Snail Mail United · · Score: 1

    Helllooooo....

Email is used to support snailmail and not the other way round. Snailmail that reaches point X is scanned and emailed. This email is opened at Point Y and there it is printed out and taken to wherever it has to be delivered.

Thus email is used to convey the information in a letter from Point X to Point Y...

What u say makes sense only if snailmail is used to support email... :)

  6. India not so good at hardware on New HP Drive Lets You Burn Your Own Label · · Score: 1

I believe that only a small % of software related jobs are being migrated to India, not a very big number.

Anyways the hardware technology scenario is an entirely different ballgame. And India is a small player in this field. Consequently new developments in hardware WILL be in general quite costly for Indians, at least in the near future...

  7. DVDs still not popular in India on New HP Drive Lets You Burn Your Own Label · · Score: 1

DVDs are still not popular in India and they have a long way to go before they can come anywhere close to the popularity of CDs

Any new technology generally takes longer to sink into the Indian market because of the relatively higher entry level costs by Indian standards...

However once DVD Drives become popular maybe the costs will be a smaller % of the overall cost and therfore more affordable. However another question bothers me : Do CDs and DVDs have basically the same physical structure so that LightScribe technology can be used with DVDs too or are they different enough to not make this possible ??

An with a number of things in the real world CR-Writers with LightScribe technology and the special CDs are obviously prone to the chicken or egg syndrome

The special CDs won't become popular until the special CD Writers become common and the CD Writers won't become common until the special CDs become common enough...

  10. 10$ = Rs 500 approx on New HP Drive Lets You Burn Your Own Label · · Score: 5, Interesting

A CD Drive costs about Rs. 1200-1500 in India.

An increase of 10$ (=Rs. 500 approx) is a bit too steep. Obviously the good old felt-tip pen is much cheaper !!

But the basic idea/concept is very user friendly and cool. Wish they can make it a bit cheaper... :)

  11. Cool !! on New HP Drive Lets You Burn Your Own Label · · Score: 4, Insightful

    Cool idea...

Only downside it seems is that you cannot use normal CDs. You have to use CDs which can actually are designed to allow this 'burning' on the flipside...
