Here is some logic working here, somebody poke a hole in it -
If the licence only includes hardware (and not software) then (eg. iPod) since the iPod contains hardware which is a plugin to iTunes, but it uses SOFTWARE to actually use it, then shouldn't it be in violation of the licence?
If the exception is that software that is contained in hardware is alright, then isn't the computer itself hardware and the plugin software?
Did they forge that software is required for hardware to run and plugin to iTunes?
there are absolutely no circuitry limitations with integrated components
I know that, I mean that I feel more powerful if I have a huge grahpics card with a million components on it that I just don't see them stuffing onto the already crammed mb.
integrated networking devices are generally faster than pci NICs
Like I said, I have no experience with them, but anything is faster than mine anyway.
I have an SB Live and it works perfectly (WinXP), I haven't had any issues with it (the SB, not XP) and next time I go and buy a sound card, it will be one from creative.
I just remembered too - I have an SB Pro ISA still working in my 486 "junk-box."
I don't really care about integrated components, why? Because they are usually such low quality anyways that they might as well be dead components...
- Video - When was the last time you saw decent video coming from an integrated component. I know that nVidia was trying to combat this philosophy, but we all know that a good video card has to be at least 1/4 the size of the motherboard.
- Sound - I know somebody who had integrated sound and some games just hated it (ie. no sound, or bugs with sound). Much like the video aspect, you need 1/4 motherboard components. However, I do have to agree that integrated sound isn't all _that_ bad if you just have some stereo speakers and aren't an audiophile.
- Networking - I can't really comment on this, but I can say that from past experience, that unless you know what chipset you've got and it's good quality, it will suck. I have a 10/100mbps card which operates at 10mbps no matter what is at the other end (and I have tested the other end).
- Serial/Parallel Bus - I suppose you want this on a seperate card too? Well, I too like the days when you had a vast range and choice of new/replacement serial cards (hell, back then you could have multiple ones for a whole range of different things.
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I was planning on getting my whole network setup (again) so that it actually works this time as well.
I've never tried (or heard of) building your own router, but I'd love to give that a shot (before I screw it up and turn it into something totally different;) ).
I know, I know, I'm ashamed of it myself and I'm thinking of getting a router for it, but after blowing all my cash on the ibook, I have to compromise for a few months until I can get something like that.
Notice that they only specified file sharing programs and not networks.
For example, they specified edonkey2000 which is a program which uses the edonkey network. You could use the eMule client on the edonkey network and not be in violation of their BS.
I have my ibook connected up (via. network) to my XP box which has the internet connection (internal DSL modem). However, XP has the habit of crashing when I try to transfer a lot of data over the network (it's a bitch that way). Right now, I don't give a s*** why it does this, all I know is that I hate XP and if I could I would get rid of it (don't get me started on that).
Can someone provide me with a manual download link (apple seems to have taken that out) as I can't use Software update for updates as XP crashes (don't ask, it just doesn't work).
I'm curious as to why their patches are soooooo large.
I just don't seem to get what this will accomplish.
They appear to be generating/creating virtual worlds which may be orbiting stars and then look for life on the artifical planet (which may be modified to produce outcomes).
Technology (IMO) isn't sophisticated enough to make evolutionary decisions from a (possibly) multi-million dollar waste of money (not mine, I don't live in the US). That's what TV is for;)
Here (In NZ) I would like for stores to have some way for me to look up current prices on the web. For example, recently when buying my ibook I found several stores which I could buy it through (on apple's website) and only one of those stores had a website. That meant that I was in a car to drive around the place to get prices (annoying to say the least).
FYI (if you don't know), this topic is for the window manager enlightenment ( here) not about enlightening you about something. Although, we should have an Enlightmenment (non-WM) one.
As I'm from NZ, it's a welcome change to actually be able to see news like this on Slashdot as there is not real place locally to see anything like this.
But I sure hope it passes as it will be a SLD for, well, geeks and I don't think there are ANY of those out there.
Why must the world be so cruel to us New Zealanders? Why can't we have a huge conference with known attendees?
Oh well, I'd better get started creating my own.....

Well, I can't deny that, but I got trapped you see. Once you watch subs, you can never go back to dubs.
I'm assuming that it's all English dubbed anime, bad, very bad.

But (IMO), nothing beats a sound blaster PCI card.

How about -
Heaven.
If I remember correctly, .com is commercial space and there is space for them to use .gov as well as they whole .nz space. Yes, plonkers it right.

Just a couple of tips here -
Probably the best avenue to go down would be the internet (and it doesn't matter what you're trying to sell).
The worst place to try is popups and popunders.
Jeez, I just can't wait for March 2002 to come around.
:(
However, if time isn't circular, then we won't be getting any beta
I just don't seem to get what this will accomplish.

Well, it's been edited now.

Duplicate (as it has been pointed out), maybe it will become more news when version 1 is out.
Don't worry, I'll get to that stick man first!!!
I'm curious though, does this US patent effect me in New Zealand?

and with a miracle, on my Newton 2100
That'll be one hell of a miracle
