    Ok, I can see a savings in an urban setting - but I drive 50 miles each way, 99% of that on a highway.

    In a hybrid, I'd just be a gas engine hauling a bank of batteries. The fact that I "skip" first gear wouldnt make a difference.

    As luck would have it, a co-worker lives just an exit up from me (closer to work), and bought a prius. We compared numbers over about a 2 month span.

    My 2005 v6 mustang got 26.3 mpg over the whole 2 month period, he got 25.something.

    Too close to say I "won", but I don't see his fuel economy. Add to that, he paid significantly more - his care is pricier to maintain, and I got a sweet little 'vert, while he looks like a complete fag in his car.

    YAY GREEN

    It's all marketing, unless you spent a lot of time at red lights.

    Analog outputs, I agree. But I'm using sp/dif, it's a digital signal out, so there's no noise, hiss, or pops. I can't say for the quality of the mic-in, but I only use it for the likes of skype, and nobody has complained thus far.

    I bought an SB Live value edition, about 8 years ago, and have used it in every rig I've built since. I've seen nothing come along to make me want to upgrade. In fact, the card isn't used right now - I'm using onboard sound on my current rig, with s/pdif out.

    Why would I ever buy another sound card? Would anyone but an audiophile care? I have all the surround sound I need right now.

    I know the latest round have onboard ram to "speed up gameing 2 da xtreme", but the numbers dont bear that out - IIRC, only Quake 4 took advantage of it when I checked, and hardly showed any noticable performance gain.

    Really, what can they offer me, besides gimmicky stuff?

    No, at 6000 feet there is still the same percentage of oxygen in the air, but at a lower pressure. This removes oxygen from the air. For a same volume of space it would have as much oxygen as a similar volume at 6000 feet.

    Something will burn with the lower concentration of oxygen, but would be much less likely to ignite into open flame. It'd smolder slowly, and give you much more time to react to it.

    It's a confusing analogy to explain a simple technical concept, because tech writers assume everybody is beneath their intelligence. Like putting too much air in a balloon.

    Well, wake up, sport. High level boxed apps are taking over, and we've reached a point where almost anybody can write enough "code" to get what they need done.

    What the workplace is looking for is motivated professionals, who are pleasant to work with, not condescending, and are comitted to the job.

    You're going to find it harder and harder to get payed to sit at home noodling on some C function. The workplace doesn't work that way, never did, and never will.

    You are less and less necessary every passing day, as the average employee picks up more and more computer skills. Your technical skills will not carry your career on their own. Get the fuck out, show up 15 minutes early. Impressions are everything. The guy who's consistantly late looks like he doesn't care, he's not the guy you count on, he's not the guy you promote to a position of importance.

    Or get all haughty and look down at everyone else, and assume you're more important. Doesn't matter to me.

    If you dont have HDTV, XBox 360 games look just like XBox games, and PS3 games look just like PS2 games.

    Nintendo came in at the (IMO) right price point of 250, with an innovative controller, and the promise of new and fun titles to play.

    Sony and MSFT came along with.... support for a TV I don't own, and have no near-term plans to buy, and as-of-yet, nothing that piques my interest play-wise to the tune of 3/4 grand investment.

    The wii's sales have been meteoric, despite the "superior technology" of the PS3 and XBox 360. My question is, have Sony and MSFT completely underestimated the penetration, and demand for, HDTV, and are you both feeling that now?

    On a standard set Wii titles look better than the last gen, and offer an new, innovative, and most importantly fun experience. On a standard set, a PS3 is a $600 PS2, and a 360 is a $400 Xbox.

    Also, wrt Live, Home, etc: do you really think gamers are so eager to install stores under our TVs?

    Do you have any vision for the online experience, other than as a way to get my credit card number?

    I really don't get the logic. Maybe they should, maybe if they thought it was profitable, they would There's no money in it. The site you are reading is owned by a failed linux box provider, they should know more than anyone why Dell doesnt promote or sell boxes with Linux.

    But why should they have to? Why do you think you have a right to go to Dell and ask them for this?

    Should EB Games have to carry Neo Geo titles? I like my Neo Geo. Lots of people do, there's a very active community behind it. Whats the difference?

    Unless you want to redefine "IT professionals" as "people who cant install an OS themselves".

    I travel around and been in plenty of data centers, and have seen plenty of boxes running Linux. So, SOMEBODY out there is managing to install it.
