  1. Worthless tech support team makes me mad. on Beyond Good, Evil, Sales, As UbiSoft Ponders Popularity · · Score: 2, Interesting

    What a worthless company.

In Beyond Good & Evil (pc version) there is a game ending bug. Affects a whole lot of people. Message boards everywhere have people desperately seeking an answer as to what is wrong (search on Google for the second triangle key bug) and guess what Ubisoft says about it.. NOTHING!

So all of these people, including myself, are completely screwed. Ubisoft hasn't released a fix for it and hasnt said a word. The only reason I have even been able to get past that point is because I stumbled across an unofficial hack that some guy wrote to specifically get past the part in the game that is broken.

So sure, there is a fix, but what about all of those people who aren't as good at the internet and can't find it? Or the little kids who got the game as a present and don't have internet access? It wasn't an official fix, it wasn't found on the BG&E site, there were no notes on the tech support pages. It was only through searching on Google and bouncing myself around on different message boards did I eventually find the fix. Heck, FAQs on gamefaqs even mention the bug and say that if you find it your best bet is to find someone with a save game past that point.

Releasing a game broken and then refusing to fix it is a huge mistake on their part. As soon as a bug like this is found they should release an official fix for it the next day, not drag their feet and maybe address it in a few months.

Splinter Cell (PC) had the same sort of problem, in many cases a player would shoot his weapon and the sound would go completely nuts. Loud static would make it unplayable. Gamers would have to quit out of the game completely and go back in to make the sound go back to normal.

So what did Ubisoft do to address the problem? Jack. They did nothing. People were trying to find an answer but they provided nothing.

So sure, they can release killer games but if they keep releasing them broken and refuse to support the people who spent their money, why should anyone bother?

After the huge let down that was Final Fantasy Online I am starting to think that you are completely correct. FFO was fun for a few weeks but then once you realize that its the same thing over and over and over the game becomes a bore. Until games become like the movie Existance or the anime .hack//sign, mmorpg will continue to appeal only to those who have an addiction.

I found the grouping in FFXI to be next to impossible to do. People were so hardcore about finding that perfect group that they wouldnt allow jsut anyone in. Also, with the huge restrictions FFXI puts on the levels of party members in a group the game makes it so that if you don't play for a few days you lose out and can't hang out with your online people anymore because you can't be in their groups. I guess I just prefer real life and living life at my own pace. That's why I like single player games and other non persistant world online games. You can play them whenever you feel like it and not worry about not keeping up with everyone else.

I can comment on your FFXI bit..

I bought FFXI a few weeks after the USA release because I had heard such good things about it. I figured I wanted to see what this MMORPG addiction was all about and if it would effect me.

Well, it didnt. At all. I played it for about 2 weeks before I became completly bored with it. I kept thinking to myself.. what is the point? I level up so I can get better weapons so I can kill bigger animals so I can level up so I can.. etc.

What is the fun in that? It's an endless cycle that never has any clear ending. I uninstalled the game the next day, closed my PlayOnline account, and havent looked back.

I just dont see how people can get addicted to such repetitive nonsence. In an offline game you have a clear goal to work towards, a story line to progress, and eventually, and ending. In an MMORPG all you do is just level up so you can be better then everyone else.

Oh well.. I guess some of us will never understand this whole MMORPG thing.

Sure, I can go out and get me a new fancy schmancy $500 geforce 5900 XP+ with with 5 GHZ ddr7 ram and a 10,000,000 RPM fan hooked up to it, but, will my athlon 2100+ xp be able to push that card any further then it can push my Geforce4 4400?

  7. Re:sorry ID. Single player games just dont swing. on Doom 3 Vaporware no More · · Score: 1

In response to the line: "It's not about how scary the monsters look anymore." I would just like to point out the Silent Hill and Resident Evil games. Both are single player and both are about how scary the monsters look.. and both are very very popular. Many people don't want to bother with multiplayer all the time. We don't have the time to put into a game to get our "skillz" on par with the people who dedicate their lives to playing a game. For many of us a single player game provides just as much excitement as a multiplayer one and a much better story to boot. How about Prince of Persia? That game is single player and it getting a ton of awards for being the best game of the year. Mulitplayer games have their place but I doubt they will ever replace single player games.

I can still remember Red Bull from Wipeout XL from a long time ago and I still think of that game everytime I see a can of Red Bull. When it finally came to America the only reason I even tried Red Bull was because it was in the game. Enter the Matrix had Powerade all over it but I think I just remember that one because the game was so bad.
