Man, any geek worth his salt takes the time to learn who's shoulders he/she is standing on.
...Not to mention putting such obvious flamebate out without logging out and becoming an anonymous coward:-) Hey wait a minute, you're an ac with a more useful post. Yours is at least not flamebait. Well anyway, flame the "first post" guy away! lol
OK Here's my little list of things wrong with this article at first glance:
1: Windows NT 4.0 Outperforms Linux On Common Customer Workloads Yes, we've all seen those mindcraft tests... we all know:-)
2: Linux Needs Real World Proof Points Rather than Anecdotal Stories OK probably every person who knows a linux user has heard the "System that ran for a year without being rebooted" story, but that's NOT the only evidence of linux's superior reliability. Linux has NEVER frozen on me, except for once or twice when I was messing with the runlevels in my early days... however any windows user knows exactly how often it freezes, and any NT administrator will testify the same for NT.
3: Free Operating System Does Not Mean Low Total Cost of Ownership What is total cost of ownership? In my entire linux-using career, I have paid a total of $40 towards linux software. I bought RedHat 5.2 back before my cable modem days. Since I started using windows, i've spent at least $1000 on software. Open Source has NO total cost of ownership. It's that simple. All you pay for is the phone bill downloading it.
4: Linux Security Model Is Weak Two words: Back Orifice
5: Linux Makes No Sense at the Desktop I have used linux at the desktop happily for about a year now. It's been a fun experience learning it. Now that I know the basics, I can use it daily. There is no lack of good software for linux, only a lack of PAY software.
6: Linux does not provide support for the broad range of hardware in use today. I have had very few hardware problems that weren't fixable by a download. There would have been no download if the hardware companies had included linux drivers, but that's the breaks.
Well thanks for actually reading my rant, flame away for my inaccuracy, and I hope you enjoyed it. Please moderate me up!
Anyone else notice that this just happens to be named Cartman? Correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't Cartman wear a BLUE HAT? I wouldn't think that RedHat would knowingly name their distro after an obvious MANDRAKE fan, but it's a funny correlation:-) Suggested moderation: Funny
This is great news as far as I am concerned. For every commercial project that get's open-sourced (even better, gpl'd) an angel get's it's wings:-) Carmack just got his 15'th pair I think.
BTW, I've already gotten an e-mail looking for the drivers i'm talking about, there are postscript drivers at http://www.httptech.com/ppa/. Have fun! Moderator, please moderate this up as informative. I wanna be a moderator!!!
ouch tough moderation, where are all those great meta-moderators i heard about? How is that off-topic? Now THIS is offtopic. Let's just insert something so it's not and so i don't lose any MORE karma... Does anyone have any information as to the theoretical limits of such a monster processor? When will it be available for my house? How much will it cost?
FYI, last I heard the Coppermine is a very misleading name in that the chips will NOT be copper. Still aluminum for now. Anyone have a clue why they named it coppermine? I'd like to know.
Do we have a version of linux that'll run on it yet? After all, it runs on everything else, maybe it can run on a chip that doesn't exist yet... LOL who wants to start a project...
And don't flame me, yes I realise that no company changes their business strategy this quickly based on a bad article, but they're so close together it's just funny! Kinda makes you wonder...
LOL it looks like he gave up when he had one step left: startx. haha i don't know how descriptive the caldera manual is, but in redhat it gives you an option to use X by default. This is the best idea for anyone who has no clue at linux and doesn't want to learn the hard way (reinstalling about 20 times before finally getting it rignt) like me and all those brave souls who came before me.
Has anyone else noticed the slowness of CNN's servers whenever they're on slashdot? And they've been on so frequently lately that they're almost constantly slashdotted. Maybe they should upgrade if they wanna keep writing tech stories:-) (Recommended rating: Slightly offtopic, funny. 2) haha not likely, eh? i just need karma
I thought we've been throught this already-- wasn't there a ruling that says AOL doesn't own the phrase "You've Got Mail" or "Instant Messaging"? Correct me if i'm wrong, and fyi IANAL
Multimedia Applications? Has the Palm line grown that much since I bought my PalmPilot Personal (since upgraded to professional)???
Reminds me of the Droopy Sound program made way back when... It showed the capabilities of PalmPilots to reproduce sounds... poorly. LOL it sounded like the Cartoon Character Droopy (the dog with the floppy ears) but it was no technical marvel.
Why??? Anyone with the capability to write a CD filled with MP3's has access to a computer... And it doesn't cost $80 to get a decent sound system for your computer (well it might) so it's more of a stereo. Also, i've heard some of the SFX on playstations... I don't know if it was the TV or what, but they're not so hot.
One thing though... I had that idea 3 years ago when I first saw the replacement for a ski-lift, a great big fan you strap on your back. Of course that'd be fun to use on the way back down, probably add 30 mph to your impact:-)
I would be trying BSD right now... if I had another drive. Right now, i'm stuck with a 4 gigger, and it fills up pretty fast when you've got Win95 AND Linux on it. Plus, I had some trouble with BSD Partitioning. At one point I got some extra space and decided to install it... but for some reason it refused to write the partition table and format the BSD "Slice".
By the way, don't flame me for having Windows on here... I don't use it anymore, but my parents can't understand Linux. I'm continually downsizing my Windows partition to accomodate new fun stuff:-)
Correct me if I'm wrong... but they ship these with the MacOS 8. That is braindead. If they shipped it with LinuxPPC or something NOT MacOS, i would have no qualms. Patrick Barrett Yebyen@adelphia.net

This would make my day. Everyone knows open source makes things better.
Right now i think staroffice sucks, but it's free (kinda) so i use it over applixware.
It'd be much better if us open-sourcers were developing it.
