Just knowing that some crazed person would actually try to take a colossall achievement such as a space elevator down saddens me greatly. seems like we need to undergo some more evolving.
If the Chinese beat us to Mars I would still be proud. Proud to be a member of a species capable of such a feat. The idea of space travel is an endeavor for humanity's sake, not the sake of a nationality. Besides, if the Chinese beat us to Mars, we'd have more incentive to one up them on human travel outside the solar system.
Truth is, you don't know what stange dependencies the installer might have on the kernel. They could have relied on kernel code that they shouldn't have. I have a hard time understanding why a gnome installer would need to rely on kernel internals to begin with. But don't be quick to point the finger at the kernel developers. Also, if you "carefully" update the kernel like you said, it would be slowed down in its backwards compatability.

Thanks to the beauty of open source, someone will come along shortly and port it to linux and the Unixes. There is even a mention on their website about a porting effort about to begin.
i had the utmost pleasure of taking the class twice back in the day... i originally took ap pascal my sophmore year (A test) then went back and took ap c++ (AB test) my senior year. pascal was an outdated language and the ap classes that were added to the c++ class were terrible. #include .... i still have nightmares. i can't see how there would be any disadvantage to going to java. i don't really enjoy java, but it does embody important design methodolgies which are important to learn. i'm sure they'll find a way to screw up java however... and with the quality of high school computer science teachers (Ms. Kl**p *cough* *cough* for all of you Mainland students out there:) )... i'm sure young lads will continue to grow up with a warped sense of programming.
would it be possible to use the magnetic field(s) to divert the course of an asteriod that would otherwise cause impending doom to earth? perhaps by creating the field around the asteriod itself to help accelerate it either around earth or halt it completely if caught early enough?
