So is that how you interface with your CueCat?

  2. Science fiction can skew one's view of reality on Designers - Are You Influenced By What You Read? · · Score: 5, Insightful

I do virtual reality research with head-mounted displays. I mean real-world applications stuff. I can't tell you how many times I've heard people say, "You're wasting your time - the real way to do it is with direct neural connections to the optic nerve" (a la Gibson, et al) or even worse, "Just wait until they have holodecks!" These people aren't in touch with reality and IMO, their vocal view do more harm than good. Neural implants into something as enormously complex as the human visual system are way off (and imagine the problems we'll have in getting there - something goes wrong and you go blind)! The reality is that we first have to master the visual "interface" we have right now: the eye and the light entering it.

...and as for holodecks... They look great on TV, but the real-world implications of that Star Trek pipe dream are almost laughable. Pure fantasy that's even farther off (if not infinitely far off).

  3. Fastest growing OS in history? on Office Depot: Windows XP Apps Must Be Microsoft-Approved · · Score: 1

From the article: In October 2001, Microsoft released Windows XP, which has become the fastest growing operating system in history. Is that really true? I heard the adoption of WinXP was slower than expected and slowing still. (...or does that statement have to do with the consumer and business sides now being combined? If so, it still seems shifty...)

  4. Re:pay-per-view on Examining Microsoft Update · · Score: 1

If you actually read into the article, you'll see that the real meat of it IS pay-per-view... as well as source for programs they used to investigate (which apparently includes hooks into the API calls to intercept the SOAP messages before they enter SSL to be sent to MS).

  5. Re:MD5? on Mission: Infiltrate the P2P Network · · Score: 1

Good idea! ...about a trust-based rating system. Perhaps the P2P transaction needs to not be considered complete at the end of the file exchange. The downloader then "rates" the download once he listens to it and determines it to be non-corrupt. This adds "karma points" to the peer, kinda like those here on /. or the feedback system on eBay.

  6. Re:Good For Them on Mandrake News · · Score: 5, Interesting

Even for experienced users, I think Mandrake is a great distro. If it's easy to install, why does that make it strictly "for newbies"? I'm a developer, not a network admin, and personally I'd rather spend my time progging than editing .conf files and troubleshooting my network (my past Debian installs come to mind as I say that).

I just installed Mandrake's MNF on a system yesterday and it was cake to set up! Especially after I almost threw my P200 box out the window because the Red Hat 8.0 (Server) Install kept crashing on it (and RH 7.2 didn't seem to be stable either). This Mandrake MNF seems to be rock solid.

Mandrake is great. I'm gonna start sending them money. I hope they make it.
