Shorting is basically borrowing the stock from another customer at the same brokerage and selling it at the current price, in expectation that you can buy it back later at a lower price and pocket the difference. So basically what TDW is telling you is they haven't got any shares in any accounts that haven't already been borrowed.

You might have luck with a different broker, but when I tried it I got the same result.

Its probably for the best anyhow, if IBM does wind up buying them out to shut them up it could be bad news for shorts.

Yeah, I'm sure the bus speed difference between a P133 and a Pentium 4 is negligible...

Since the program in question is basically the Java Virtual Machine, I'm certain most of us have noticed that a P133 with 32 MB of EDO RAM is just the teensiest bit slower than a P4 with half a gig of RDRAM in running it.

As I said, the last experience I had with WP for Java was on a mid-range Pentium... 5 years ago. It did everything it was supposed to, but was miserably slow.

Now, let us suppose that at least a plurality of the people on slashdot accept the notion that Java apps run at the very least noticably faster when you go from a 5-6 year old Pentium to a modern system with 16x as much RAM, of a far greater speed I might add, AND a processor capable of doing more than 20x the instructions per second.

Now think about the notion that WP for Java would be faster on the faster system... still sound so crazy?

Fortunately this isn't a courtroom, and the fact of the matter is valid logic and court proceedings aren't neccesarily identical. Hearsay isn't a logical fallacy. The fact of the matter is, when I last used Java WP it was on a Pentium 133... and while it did everything it was supposed to, it was painfully slow. The notion that now, on a Pentium 4 that is 20+ times as fast, the slowness isn't noticable any longer shouldn't require much of a suspension of disbelief. I don't use WP anymore, and would be lying if I said I did. I know of at least one person in the universe who still does, however, and he says it performs nicely on his P4, I see no reason to doubt him.
