  3. They should know why on OSI Approves Microsoft Ms-PL and Ms-RL · · Score: 1
Nobody, not even Ballmer and Gates controls or dictates fully the company actions

At the micro level you're correct, but Open Source strategy and OSI are pretty macro-level issues and Ballmer should be fully aware of what that strategy is. If someone has acted on their own accord, then expect them to be confused with a chair and thrown around a bit. If Ballmer truely is clueless about this then that is gross mismanagement on his part and you can expect a lynching at the next shareholder's meeting.

Perhaps "we are smarter than me", but "we are also dumber than me". So how do you gather the smart bits and leave out the dumb bits? Perhps the answer is to use some sort of Linux-like peer review + benign dictator mechanisms. That might appeal to techies who see the benefit in code control, but will it work for the great unwashed; all hoping for their 15 words of fame and getting upset becuase they get edited out.

  8. Want low power? Go ARM, go modular on Meet the 5-Watt, Tiny, fit–PC · · Score: 1
If you want low power devices, you go with ARM not x86. That's the main reason no phones use x86.

ARM parts have lacked horsepower vs x86, but the newer multi-code devices (http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS2917028234.html) will change that.

Small too. A whole system (CPU + RAM + some peripherals) can fit on a DIMM stick, or even on a single chip with stacked parts. Imagine a Beowulf cluster of these in a regular laptop size case. Want a low power system for web and mail? Load just one module. Want a high performance gaming/ scientific workstation? Load all the module slots.

When the Isrealites fled from Egypt, they couldn't carry all these gods, expecially all the statues carved out of stone - which weighed many tons and hardly promoted effective fleeing. So they had a quick vote and declared: one god and not a heavy one carved out of rock either.

Multi-platform is vital for helping a transition off MS and onto Linux or whatever. I use OO to edit docs and it just does not matter to me whether I use Windows or Linux. In essence all I care about is that it is an OO-capable machine.

There are some things you just cannot say in certain languages because they lack the constructs and idioms. At one stage my father and I could speak English, Afrikaans and Zulu reasonably well and we'd often mix these all and be able to express richer thoughts than by just sticking with one language. Having moved away from South Africa, my ability to speak both Afrikaans and Zulu have fallen away badly and I can now really only communicate in English.

Various words just have no real translation. "Gesellig" (Dutch) just means so much more than the dictionary equivalents: genial, social. Similarly "mana" (Maori) means more than just pride or spirit.

Kill a language and you kill a culture. Kill a culture and you end up with disaffected people. You just need to look at Inuit, Uustalian Aboriginal and various other groups to see that this is a bad thing.
