This is getting off topic I know, but I thought Neo's battle with 100s of Agent Smiths was a great metaphor for what I do to my spam every blessed day.

  3. theatre sneak-in on BitTorrent Blamed for Matrix2 Downloads · · Score: 5, Funny

Though it's true the Matrix Reloaded is a far better film to see on the BIG SCREEN than in some cheesy little window on my PC, my enjoyment of it that way (and I took my wife with me to see it too!) did not contribute anything towards the 380 million dollars it has collected to date. Why? We snuck in! Never pay to see a movie at a megaplex... just leave your coat in your car and claim you're returning from a cigarette break. It's the punk rock thing to do!!

  4. MP3s are not an executable file format on RIAA Plans Cyberwar Effort · · Score: 1

Maybe I'm missing something, but could someone please explain how a .MP3 file, played through my copy of Winamp, is going to execute the RIAA's malicious code? I understand the problems of playing stuff (or even opening text files) with Microsoft software, which loves to parse through somatic data files looking for VBScript to run. But Winamp knows its not an operating system (except when it installs an AOL bookmark and desktop shortcut, but that's another issue).

  5. different from China's policy toward Falun Gong? on That Link Is Illegal · · Score: 1

It's illegal in China to link to Falun Gong websites because FG is regarded as a "terrorist organization." I don't see this policy as very different. The question is: should we be happy that our laws are stomping out dissent in a manner similar to that of the Chinese? I'm sure it's still perfectly legal for UCSD students to link to organizations that advocate the violent overthrow (and commercial airplane bombing) of Cuba - there are members of such organizations in high places in the Bush administration. Otto Reich comes immediately to mind.

Of course, there will probably be a strong demand for ISPs that advertise NOT logging subscriber times and IP addresses once the shit goes down in October (or whenever - probably timed to coincide with the invasion of Iraq so as not to draw much press attention).

Presumably homeslice at BayTSP is able to get IP addresses and times from monitoring his Kazaa traffic. He then presents this data to Earthlink with a subpoena. Meanwhile Earthlink logs every subscriber with their dynamic IP and time, so they can match IP addresses to actual people. If there's any justice in the world, Earthlink tells homeslice "screw you" when he comes with the subpoena.

  12. misnomer: "open unrequested windows" on No Pop-up Blocking in Netscape 7.0 · · Score: 1

Actually, disabling "open unrequested windows" also turns off the javascr!pt:window.open in href tags as well as the windows that open in body onLoad events. I'd prefer it if I could just turn off the onLoad windows and still get the popups i specifically request. If I felt like putting on my C++ hipboots and wading into Mozilla source, hell, I'd change this myself.

I know you're kidding, but I'm surprised at all the people who think running their air conditioners with the window open will have a net cooling effect. 2nd Law of Thermodynamics should to be taught before multiplication - it would lead to more common sense in the world. The chilling effect of the DMCA, however, may prove capable of bringing chill to our world from outside our themodynamic system.

  14. audio and ways to improve KVM performance on USB KVMs Compared · · Score: 1

I find some keyboards hang when on cheap KVMs because there is momentary power sag when workstations are shifted. I put a big electrolytic capacitor across the power lines to my keyboard to prevent this problem. I don't really see the point of switching audio lines; I'd prefer to hear audio from all boxes coming together through some sort of mixer - ideally one I can control computationally and manually. Does anyone know of a mixer ideal for this purpose?
