Considering how a number of the Conservatives (and, to be fair, some of the Libertarians as well) have been attacking Obama for his appointment of "smart" people, I get the impression that there are quite a few of them who don't value intelligence, and won't hesitate for a moment to try and attack them.
Arguing that we need someone "well-heeled" in politics seems maybe a bit far reaching. Being a politician is, in many ways, simply having the ability to get along with others. It's the kid on the playground who is willing to share his toys, while knowing which bullies are likely to steal them. People who are successful at their work and have advanced to high positions within their fields generally have already demonstrated those skills.
As far as equipment goes, buy a Garmin. They are practically indestructible, extremely user-friendly, inexpensive and feature heavy. The 60C will run for over 20 hours on two AA batteries, and that's WITH a color screen. People in the military regularly have family members buy them Garmin GPS and ship them over to where they're deployed. That ought to say something for their quality level.
Being that you'll be in Africa, it should work great for you. Where GPS can have problems is in canyons, dense tree cover, or in a city like London with very tall buildings (which can deflect the signals and cause the GPS to get very confused).
Sadly, none of the Garmin mapping software works with the Mac. This doesn't sound like it should be an issue, since you won't be downloading maps of West Africa into the unit anyway.:) There are also third-party options available which will give you other capabilities.
Good luck on your trip, and make a difference out there.
Because by dramatically increasing the number of people who can run the operating system, it increases the chances that some of those people are willing and able to write viruses that can infect OS X.
So, now that PC users have access to OS X, can I safely assume that some doorknob somewhere is feverishly working on creating the first virus for OS X on Intel so it'll be ready when the first machines roll out the door next year?
I notice in the sample picture that the guy's shoes are not trasparent. I would think the same physics that keeps it from going through your skin very far would keep it from going through leather. Does this mean I can't wear my shiny leather pants to the airport anymore without fear of a body cavity search?
I sometimes get the feeling that if someoner we could suddenly eliminate Florida and New Jersey, we'rid ourselves of an extremely large percentage of the sleaze in this country. It seems almost every time I've had dealing with a company that's operating just barely outside the law, it's in NJ or FL.
I'm not implying that everyone who lives there is sleaze. Just that sleaze is more likely to live there.:)
Now don't get me started on DC...
Some of you may wonder just how major this nuclear arsenal of which he speaks really is. Well, here's the 90 second answer:

After reading all the details, it seems to me that MGM is actually in the right here. But I'm apparently "entitled" to have about 10 of my movies replaced. Seeing as how I agree with MGM, though, it would be wrong of me to take advantage. On the other hand, it only costs them about $.75 to produce each movie, and they're not movies I would normally buy anyway...
Oh my God! It IS about movie piracy!
"After 100 000 years, we get down to about a one in ten chance of still existing"
Frankly, I'll be happy to still be existing 40 years from now. I can only imagine how bad the Social Security situation is gonna be in 100,000 years.
I draw the line right around the spot where the activity is illegal. So I guess that goes right between Kiddie Porn and Regular Porn.
I would assume that the sites targeted by Lycos were committing the kinds of behavior that, under CAN-SPAM, would not be legal.
"...is apple giving them another deep discount..."
Apple didn't give them a deep discount the first time. Jobs says that the only special treatment that they got was that their orders for G5s were filled before the general public's. But they paid full price for 'em.
Apple must have known they'd get sued... and they've known it for a while, since as someone already pointed out, much of their focus is now on music production/sales/accessories.
Depending on how Apple (computers) handles it, this lawsuit could end the standoff once and for all, and at the same time, the publicity that they receive will only help to raise awareness of the iTunes Music Store.
Yes, Apple will almost undoubtedly lose this lawsuit, but if a multi-million dollar payout means they never have to deal with this again, it'll be worth it for them. Since they've got over $3,000,000,000 in the bank, even a couple hundred million won't break the bank.
My guess is that they have no plans to limit booting into OS X so soon. As the eweak article pointed out, too many of Apple's core market-base RELY on OS 9 only products. Encouraging people to switch to OS X is one thing, eliminating half your customer base is another.
But if a "rumor" gets out implying that they just might do such a thing, how many developers do you think just might make the extra push to get their products compatible with OS X that much sooner?
Another rumor recently surfaced that Apple may start requiring unique serial numbers for OS X due to piracy (although of course Apple makes no official comment). Then Amazon offers a $50 rebate on OS X and it quickly becomes their best-selling product.. no doubt a few of those users being people concerned that they wouldn't be able to just "bum" a copy from one of their friends come August 24th. Amazon has since discontinued the rebate due to "overwhelming response" (as if we're supposed to believe they were losing money on that deal?), but during that time Apple picked up quite a few users who probably had no original intention of buying OS X (but every intention of getting a copy).
Although Apple claims to despise the rumor mill, I think they know its power quite well, and use it effectively more often than people realize. Only time will tell, of course.

Brain size doesn't necessarily correlate to intelligence.

...the party's not all that great, and there's hardle any chicks.
This seem obvious, but have you tried chess?

Seems to me like therer's a simple solution here--DON'T BUY SEEDS FROM Monsanto. I mean, it's not like they own every variety of corn... do they?

I noticed something odd in the latest shots from the Rover. Just on the horizon:
