  1. Power Steering failure? on Toyota Experimenting With Joystick Control For Cars · · Score: 4, Insightful

What happens when there's a power steering failure? I know it's not a common problem, but it is a problem which randomly comes up. At least with a steering wheel the driver can generally muscle the wheels to turn- I can't imagine a joystick acting as an actual lever to turn the wheels, but as more of an electronic device to turn on some motors which would handle this.

  2. It's an interesting implementation on 10/GUI — an Interface For Multi-Touch Input · · Score: 4, Interesting

But I'm not sure how many people will be wanting to drag their fingers across a surface for 8 hours a day. One of the benefits of a mouse over a touch service is that there's less friction for the hands- all of the rubbing of objects is between the mouse and the surface.

Can I see this replacing the mouse? No.

Can I see this supplementing the mouse? Yes

Can I see this being placed with a mouse and keyboard? No- the combined three objects would take up too much space (who really has that much desk space?)

  6. Re:Eyecandy in cost of usability on Firefox To Replace Menus With Office Ribbon · · Score: 1

In my work environment, the majority of people who don't know how to do certain tasks in Office are because:
    1) They don't know how to write macros (and the vast majority don't even know about the macro recorder)
    2) They don't know how to leverage the right formulas to save significant amounts of time [e.g. using a combination of =OFFSET($anchor$cell,MATCH(Use formula to identify location of unique ID defined in Source 1 amongst range of data in Source 2),0) - very useful tool when verifying price quotes when the vendor scrambles up the order of items you've sent them]
    3) They don't know about Microsoft Script Editor, let alone how to use it (very useful when doing mass-changes to graphs in Excel- this tool saved me hours in any given day during budgeting season by changing data ranges for multiple graphs at once)

However, none of these scenarios are going to be addressed via a Ribbon system (not that they're being addressed by a menu-system.) They are addressed by teaching people how to properly use the programs, rather than having them fend for themselves. Of course, this requires that the instructor is well versed with not only the programs, but how his students will need to leverage the program. E.g. Using a curriculum for people in engineering fields will fail for people in financial fields.

As an alum from the University of Wisconsin, I'll add my experience:

UW-Madison's LAN registers connections by MAC address. In order to get the MAC address added to your student ID, you need to do one of the following:

    1) Connect via Windows and have the system verify that you have a firewall and their AV software running
    2) Connect via OS X and have the system verify that you have a firewall and their AV software running (to protect the Windows users)
    or
    3) Connect via someone else's computer, log into your account and manually enter in your MAC address.

That said- Wisconsin's chemistry department is a Gentoo mirror....

If you're really concerned about the school being pro-Linux in any fashion, see if they're a mirror for either a Linux distro or SourceForge (I know University of Minnesota hosts files for SF)

Personally, I agree with one of the posts earlier- buy a netbook and write it off as an expense- just like a textbook (netbooks are less expensive than some of the textbooks I've bought.) Otherwise, buy a copy of Windows or OS X and run it in a virtual machine, then use the VM to pass the inspection tool.

The cost savings of a one-way trip are minuscule now as everyone has accepted that ISRU of propellant on Mars is an essential part of any mission plan. You don't take with you all the fuel you need to get back.. you make it there.. and most of the plans call for a fully fueled return-to-earth vehicle to be sitting ready on the surface before you send astronauts from Earth to it.

Why not just package it up from here on Earth, send it over to Mars and have it waiting for the astronauts? We've sent objects to Mars before (granted, with various outcomes)- why can't we send a fuel canister over there before we send any manned craft- we could either try to land it (probably not the best idea) or set it in orbit around the planet (probably better idea.)

In the event that the power goes out, the battery backup box lasts longer than a material power-outage. This past winter, we had a (relatively, for the area) large snow storm which knocked out my power one night. Because I had FIOS, I had to have the battery-backup box (I was renting the place, so I didn't bother to raise a fuss with the tech and have him leave the copper phone connection.) When I wanted to make a call the following morning, the battery backup box is beeping and I have to hit a button to allow me a (hopefully) 10 minute phone call. After that, the battery's dead and no more calls.

Fast-forward a few months: My girlfriend's parents were in France for a 2-week vacation (their 25th aniversary.) The weekend after they left, our area had a "severe" thunder storm. Nobody quite knows what happened, but when we checked on their house later that week, we discovered the following:

    1) Their landlines were down
    2) Their internet was down
    3) Their security system was down

The culpret: their FIOS box in their garage was fried.

Despite receiving my undergrad a few years ago, I love my POTS line (I have moved to a new place since the past winter.) The sound quality is great, I don't have to worry about my phone going down if the power goes out in my neighborhood, and it allows me to have a lower cell-phone plan (which subsidises the cost of the landline.)
