    Hello,

    I recently finished a lecture by Stephen Nowicki ( http://www.teach12.com/ttcx/coursedesclong2.aspx?c id=1500&id=1500&pc=Science%20and%20Mathematics ).

In it, he spoke about how one of the ideas about why there is coal/oil is that during the carboniferous period there were no heterotrophs at the start of the period, and none for about 60MY afterwards. Since they couldn't decompose the biological material, it simply all "pooled up".

I find this idea spectacular and was wondering if the amount of preservation could possibly be used to reenforce/disprove this idea by identifying heterotrophs or the lack thereof?

If you actually bother to read the politics section - you'll find that it has historically confined to itself to political topics of specific interest to nerds, not general political news.

In a bizarre coincidence, I just happened to have replied you your comment, despite "not bothering to read the politics section" as you have said. Interesting, eh?

Get off your pedantic ass and actually look at politics.slashdot.org and note the type of story typically published there - and note how this one doesn't match the general tenor.

General tenor == politics. Story subject == politcal. Just like how I don't get pissy when I see articles about wristwatches, crays and Amigas under "hardware", I am prepared to see the spectrum under politics. It's general. Get over it.

There is a difference between the two even if you lack the wit or energy to actual read and understand my post.

Funny how you complain about lack of wit when you yourself can't conjure up something better than a bad adhom.

DJB's software is "secure" because he can flat out deny vulnerabilities and all of his fans believe him and parrot it around for the rest of their servitude, despite there being realworld exploits for realworld configurations.

For us rational people, places like osvdb.org exist.

This doesn't even take into account the fact that 12 different patches with at least 2 or more of them being mutually exclusive are needed to make his software work. Indeed, these 12 patches are one offs usually written by one or two people and compromise the touted security of "DJB"'s godness.

PS if by "very well written" you mean hardcoded, very ugly code, using every hardware "trick" possible (thereby decreasing portability), you have an interesting perception of reality. I'll compare Postfix's coding style to Qmail's any day.

They never "set a date" explicitly, Bush can make them stay over there as long as he wants, it's just that money's going to be hard to come be eventually.

While you are certainly right about how coke from Mexico has sugar, I think you may be wrong about the corn syrup thing.

I've always read that it has more to do with the fact that (cane) sugar is substantially cheaper than corn syrup/beat sugar. As such, most places outside of the US use cane sugar. The reason the US uses corn syrup is because we have high tariffs on imported cane sugar - enough so that corn syrup/beat sugar is more economically viable in the states.

I am willing to be corrected, however.

As a result, it's tougher to hammer out some of the non-obvious issues, or issues that don't crop up in the first few hundred man hours of testing.

"Beta" in some cases, now just means "Hey, we don't have the resources to dedicate 2 man-years of testing for this App, but it works ok for us".
