  1. Sales Droids and Middle Mgrs on Suit Up Or Ship Out? · · Score: 1

Leave it to marketing to ruin things. Where I am at, I was given a talk about wearing jeans. Marketing people complained. I am now in a different position and I have to move equipment, do cables and if I get bitched at for wearing jeans, I would ask for a clothing allowance.

Dress codes are bullshit. Nothing wrong with jeans.

  2. Schwin, there is also Harley Davidson on Managing Your Company To Death · · Score: 1

Harley Davidson is popular. But also, the original founders family members bought the company back from AMF and went public. Harley almost went the way of the dodo bird.

Also, this professionalism can be a bunch of crap. It is the cowboys that make things happens, not some MBA person. At work, I hear stuff on how "we are professionals" and "we should dress like it" (ie, no jeans, boots, etc.), behave on the outside such as refraining from certain activities like motorcycling or four wheeling since it is "unprofessional".

It was sad that the Dot Com's bombed because they led the way to unshackle the workplace from the unnecessary rules and regs. Morale boosters like relaxed dress code, telecommuting, flex time are being taken away one by one because of the economy being in the hole.

  3. State Troopers and harass (was Re:Canadian border) on How Has Post-9/11 Legislation Affected You? · · Score: 1

I took two weeks vacation from Colorado to Indiana, Ohio and Virginia. Had very few problems except in Virginia when I got stopped for tinted windows. I got a ticket for tint and non-compliant headlamps (to US DOT specs). The trooper who happened to pass by me thought I was suspicious and decided to stop me. My vehicle was searched. Not much to find except tools, laptop computer, mountain bike and clothing.

That fishing expedition cost me several hundred dollars in fines even after dealing with VA County Attornies who insisted on paying up or else.

Kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

  4. Declaration of War against ALL SPAMMERS ! on FTC Encourages Consumers to Forward Them Spam · · Score: 1

We herby declare war against any and all SPAMMERS and anyone who show support to them.

Whereas SPAM now composes 36% of e-mail today versus 8% a year ago.

Whereas SPAM is causing e-mail to become a useless medium through the increase of bullshit that has to be sorted through.

Whereas SPAMMERS are obnoxious assholes who show utter disrespect to private property by

    0. Doing DoS attacks to anti-spamers through e-mail bombings,
    1. using open e-mail relays to send their trash through and
    2. bypassing spam filters set up by users who have no desire to receive such rubbish

Whereas products advertised by SPAMMER's are fraudulent.

Whereas SPAMMERs calls those people who oppose Unsolicited Commercial E-mail advertising terrorists.

Whereas SAPMMERS are lower than used car salesman, politicians.

Therefore, let it be resolved that SPAMMER's deserve to be put out of business by any legal means possible such as forcing them to lose accounts, be sued, boycotts and contacting the businesses that commercial e-mail pisses people off.

In addition, the SPAMMER's identified should have their personal contact information posted to encourage contact from people who desire NOT TO RECEIVE commercial advertising into their e-mail box.

It is time that the average Internet user be allowed to take control of their e-mail box. E-mail address are NOT f***ing public property belonging to the marketers, they are personal property belonging to the owners.

  5. Re:What pisses me off in IT on Changing Face of Linux? · · Score: 1

I can sympathize with you on dress codes. I have been a Unix Sys Admin for the past 8 years. Since I have moved to Colorado, I have wore jeans and hiking boots to work for the past 6 years which I have thoroughly enjoyed :) I, however, do bathe and use deoderant and also have my hair short which is my preference (low maintainence). I also like jeans because they are also low maintainence.

The lifestyle of Colorado as with the other Rocky Mountain states is considered very informal. People wear jeans to Church as well as high class resturaunts as well.

However, two months ago, I had my annual review with the boss and he mentioned that times are different now and because of the dot com bust, he mentioned that the jeans and the boots have to be left at home and I need to wear dress pants and shoes. Dress shoes are not that practical (especially with th snow) and are uncomfortable. Hiking boots on the other hand are comfortable and are nice when it snows.

I was pretty pissed and I am still pissed about it. I inquired on why the change and he mentioned that some higer ups who work in the Wash. DC Office put out an edict saying that appearance and seriousness about business must come first as suggested by the Marketing group. WTF ! I myself have no customer contact and no "high up" contact. I do have to move equipment and nice clothes don't last long when doing physical labor.

The Dot Com revolution was nice since it unshackled the workplace from all the unreasonable rules and regulations. From what I understand, this recessionary time is being used to return the shackles. Also a marketing group representing the clothiers who sell suits are pushing real hard to get the suit returned to the office and they have sponsored Dress Up Thursday. This means more of my hard earned money has to be spent on bullshit such as suits and the dry cleaning bill that accompany them.
