Details of how the system works are being kept secret, Hemler (Microsoft Canada president) said. "We're intentionally coy about the technology that is used in this because we think it gives the good guys an advantage over the bad guys," he said. "Think of it as an assembly of commonly available Microsoft software, using techniques from Microsoft Research and best practices that the law enforcement community shared with us."

  10. Not that bad on Australian ISPs Required To Report Child Porn · · Score: 2, Informative

Under the new laws, an ISP or ICH will face penalties of $11,000 for the individual and $55,000 for body corporates if they are made aware that their service can be used to access material that they have reasonable grounds to believe is child pornography or child abuse material and they do not refer details of that material to the AFP within a reasonable time.

The article indicates that the new law just requires that if an ISP is made aware of child abuse material accessable using their service, the ISP should inform the AFP about the material. Not that unenforcable, is it?

I was not talking about applications, but about the development platform. A present Windows developer might be willing to restrict himself to a subset of the Microsoft development platform so that his application would work on other systems.

  12. Microsoft platform subset on Miguel de Icaza on Longhorn · · Score: 5, Insightful

Having something similar to the Microsoft platform would encourage developers to develop cross-platform. If a usable subset is developed on mono, the restriction to that subset is the price for a cross-platform application - better than a reimplementation.

Maybe a small part of the recycling fee added to a new computer should be refunded when the old computer is taken for recycling. This gives a recycling fee + a non-recycling penalty.
